What should the Israeli government do?

I thought I'd start this thread to explicitly ask the question. What should the Israeli government do?

I honestly don't know. I appreciate that Israel was attacked on October 7, and that they need to respond. I'm sure everyone wants peace, but what can Israel do?

Are you saying Israel shouldn't exist in the first place? Or are you just talking about settlers in the West Bank?

And stuff like this? Where is the need? She mentioned illegal settlements of course that's what she was talking about. Where is the need for this constant combative, accusatory attitude? It permeates everything in this discussion from Israel supporters and Israel themselves. This constant sense that they just want to shut down any discussions, the end.

Obviously illegal settlements refers to illegal settlements on land that isn't Israel.

Where was my accusation? I was quite clearly just clarifying 🤦🏻‍♀️ When I've previously assumed that's what someone was talking about it turned out they were referring to all of Israel as an illegal settlement. If that had been what the poster was talking about then I'd obviously not bother talking to them.

I wish it were that obvious - other posters across social media have said similar but clarified they meant that all of Israel is an illegal settlement. So I just wanted to make sure before interacting with you.

I agree, illegal settlers are a big problem in and for the West Bank. They need to go.

It didn't come across that way though. Asking a poster to clarify what she is clearly saying does come across as combative. Why wouldn't you assume that someone means what they clearly say until they say otherwise?

As I already explained, I've previously taken words at face value but it turns out I was wrong to do so. So I sought clarification.

OK. I don't see how you just agreeing that illegal settlements in the West Bank are wrong and need to stop now and waiting to how it went would have been so terrible but you feel the way you feel.

I think illegal settlements are bad. I think the illegal settlers who are going out and murdering Palestinians are no better than Hamas. But let's be clear - there are plenty of Palestinians from both Gaza and the West Bank doing the exact same thing to Israelis. Not just Israeli settlers either. And I feel like that gets ignored far too often.

Its interesting that the majority of pro Israeli posters including some who have said they are citizens of Israel have said this
So if so many are against it then why is it still continuing? And israels plan are to expand further?
The illegal settlements are a huge obstruction on Israels part in there being any sort of peace moving forward
The settlers are nothing short of lunatics and then you have the right wing like Itamir ben gvir who was a settler himself inciting ever more hatred and spurring the settlers on
How is that vile human allowed to be part of israels government?

Have you considered the illegal settlements and settlers are a huge provocation and that they shouldn't be there in the first place.
If the provocation wasn't there then the retaliation that you talk about wouldn't be there either
Its like complaining that people hit back after they were hit first

It's continuing because Palestinians in the West Bank are still happily threatening Israelis in Israel on a daily basis so I guess it's a form of "offense is the best defence".

I don't approve of it. The majority of Israelis didn't vote for Netanyahu. But really, people need to stop pretending all Palestinians are peaceful. I'm sure the vast majority are, but there are enough calling for Israel's annihilation that it's a constant threat that can't just be ignored.

Israel needs a new government and the world needs to start encouraging Palestinians to want a two state solution and then maybe one day there can be peace. Hopefully, anyway.

Basically, stop discussing what came first, the chicken or the egg and just move on.

But the settlers are there and provoking because they got fed up with the constant supply of suicide bombers coming through from the West Bank.

Chicken, meet egg.

I don't quite understand your first paragraph. The illegal settlements are continuing where Israel is illegally taking palestinian land and allowing palestinian hating lunatics to live there and terrorise the people whose land it actually is... because some palestininans say bad things to Israelis?

Chicken, meet egg.

That's a load of rubbish
And by no means gives any sort of justification to illegal settlements
See this is the issue. When one side does something wrong we are told to condemn without any 'buts'
Yet Israel has in the past and continues in illegal activities and the thin condemnation always comes with a 'but'

It's saying yes we terrorise them and the world condemns us for it because we shouldnt even be there in the first place but they made us do it so blame them

No, not saying bad things. Doing bad things, like murdering.

EasterIssland · 07/11/2023 09:46

I just saw this and I don’t agree with it. It should be an independent agency taking care of the security and not them. They should be two independent countries

What should the Israeli government do?

This is how I feel. It feels like Israel will never just own up to their wrongdoings. There is always a but. Peace will never come while Israel won't accept that they are not 100% the victim in everything.

I agree. Israel have caused so much trauma there. I can't imagine how they should be allowed to continue what is a military occupation. Life is only going to get worse and worse for Palestinians under those circumstances and everyone will get more and more unhappy until boom! It all kicks off again.

Humdingerydoo · 07/11/2023 09:51

@Parkingt111
I'm not excusing illegal settlers, I don't agree with them. I still think it's a chicken and egg situation though as I remember well all the attacks that used to happen in Israel by people from the West Bank. The countless suicide bombers, stabbers, shooters. I remember my cousin going clubbing and almost being blown up. She survived, her friends didn't. Israelis haven't yet forgotten the existential threat coming from the West Bank for so many years

And I am saying Israel isn't 100% a victim and to stop pretending the Palestinians are. We are saying the same thing but about the other side. Yet when I'm saying it I get accused of excusing illegal settlers despite saying several times that I don't support them

WarmWinterSun · 07/11/2023 09:55

Israel must create a safe corridor for all women, children and the elderly. Then enter Gaza on the ground and destroy Hamas. Innocent Palestinian men will die but I don’t see another way.
