How do prevent the rise of anti Semitic feeling in the UK?

Will the continuous marches in London lead to an environment where anti semitism becomes acceptable? There has been a massive rise in hate crime against Jews and surely in the UK we have a duty to prevent any platform which may lead to unjustified hatred of a group in the UK?

I feel we should feel pride we have a diverse society with a while range of ethnicities and religions but we should always act to encourage social cohesion by not allowing events that could contain messages of hate.

Although the support of the Palestinian people is absolutely reasonable in terms of free speech in a democratic society and it is reasonable to comment on the actions of the Israeli state at times the marches in a lot of major British cities have the danger of including terrorist apologists.

Jewish ambassador says London feels less safe than Israel

Tzipi Hotovely told the Daily Telegraph that the Jewish community felt fear due to 'jihad ideology' witnessed during pro-Palestinian protests in the capital city over the past month.

Firstly it is only you and another poster that keeps going on about the DM. You seem way more determined to convince people that all information is through the DM filter than is actually true. I mean most the information and articles I have seen on mumsnet you can find from several many different sources IF YOU BOTHER TO GOOGLE

Secondly you protest to much about not knowing I am Jewish. That was a passing comment but interesting that it is what you picked up on. After all we have spoken on many a antisemitism thread and I am always open about being Jewish on those threads

Thirdly why wouldn't you want to stalk me I am Truly Wonderful 😁

No la la land is Holywood

I am a Londoner

Also not an Israeli because I am Jewish. Which someone on mumsnet inferred my Jewishness made me yesterday (Not you I might add). Apparently Jews are not middle eastern and should go back to the middle east all at the same time. Also Israel should be dismantled because it shouldn't have been made a state in the first place and yet Jews are all Israel. Wish people would stick to one narrative and go with it (Not saying you have this problem. Haven't spoken to you enough to know). It gets very confusing as to what people are claiming about Israel and Jews sometimes. Seriously don't think some posters have thought there Jew hate through enough. At least the likes of Kanye are clear about their narrative. I appreciate his honesty even if I find his thoughts on Jews horrific.

Hi there everyone,
It might be an idea for this thread to stick to the topic rather than descend into what appears to be a personal spat? We can't force everyone to get on, obviously, but the thread does seem to be being derailed rather.
If anyone believes that any of our guidelines have been broken, please report.

Don't you know? No one is allowed to talk about anti-Semitism, only about Gaza.

Antisemitism on a bus in London 🥴 Not even remotely surprising

It was heartening to see people protecting the Jewish person from her. Plus not only the Jewish person filming it but someone else was filming too. She tries to challenge them and another bloke stands there ready to bloke her it looks like.

Some like rays of little there despite here Jew hate behaviour

And does anyone know if this is true? I've seen it all over social media but no one seems to be reporting it. Any idea if the bus drivers had a legitimate excuse not to show up?

I have been avoiding looking at what is happening in America. Just can't take that at the moment because I remember all the violent assault on Jews there during the 2021 conflict period.

I will try to find out about this though. It doesn't surprise if true. In Australia this happened recently:

The Sydney business owner shared a defiant social media post refusing to take any 'blood money', sparking a major row that has drawn in the premier.

Not the UK but worth mentioning. It illustrates what can happen if antisemitism is left to bubble away like it has in many places like Canada

"Anti-Semitic attacks that last week saw two Jewish schools in Montreal's Cote-des-Neiges neighborhood targeted at night by gunfire and a synagogue firebombed a few days earlier in the suburb of Dollard-des-Ormeaux."

Racism, xenophobia etc has always been about. And it's hard to challenge. Islamophobia and antisemitism both exist. Whether they are growing or not, I don't know. I was talking to 'nice' white English neighbours about the house sold down the way. And I joked that I hoped the new owners wouldn't have loads of cars, vans etc. They said they didn't care as long as they were English. Prejudice exists, you just don't see it, or choose not to. We are also quick to judge. Can be as simple as not agreeing on a particular topic/issue. I must admit I put those neighbours in the bin in my head with that one remark alone. Something I have to actively fight. We might be a little more tolerant of loved ones. I generally find it hard to believe that people tar an entire people with the same brush. And those that do probably lack the ability to think critically or accept nuance - and that's a huge societal problem. Just beware of the powers that be that will hijack causes and promote victimisation and use it as an excuse to clamp down on free speech. Policing social media etc. We'll get AI judgements soon on possibly one small facet of an individuals projection.

@Trulywonderful It's heartening to see some people step up.

This was reposted by Simon Schama.
This conflict has brought Islamic anti semitism right out into the open. Obviously that's not to say there isn't Islamaphobia which we all know about, but I feel I was quite unaware of the extent of anti semitism among Muslims.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 16/11/2023 14:28

Much earlier in this thread I upset some people by saying that most of the blatant antisemitism I've personally encountered has been from Muslims. Then I said that the couple of white/Christians who said antisemitic stuff were deranged and not worth arguing with.

What I meant was that the handful of Muslims who have said antisemitic things were compis mentis, friendly, and just said matter-of-fact things like, "Well, George Bush is a Jew." They weren't angry or nasty. They just believed stuff about Jews. I didn't see how they would listen to anything I - a white Christian with an American accent - said.

The two white people who have said antisemitic stuff to my face here in the UK were not in their right minds. They were inebriated, at the very least. There's no point engaging with that.

@Xenia 'The solution is time'.
In one of my other lives I went to work past a Jewish tailor's shop in a northern British city. I thought it must have been there since the 1910s or 1920s when Jewish people came to Britain, out of the way of persecution. I wondered how many hours a day they worked to make a living, having come with nothing, and I don't think they were all naturally tailors - it was a job to make a living. Then a little phrase used to run in my head - 'And now their grandsons are consultant oncologists with private patients as well as NHS ones and they live in 5-bedroomed houses in the north of the city.'

I’m British and Jewish . My grandmothers family are from Iraq originally. So, I had this discussion with a person at work who claimed not to be antisemitic, but did claim to be knowledgable about the conflict and region. In any case, when I said many Israelis are Levantine people including my family way back, they said then you can go back to Iraq and Israeli’s can go back to where they came from and give Palestine back. They then concluded this lovely interaction by saying, I don’t know if this is antisemitic but the media egregious reporting is because Jewish people are in charge. It runs deep and always has but now people seem emboldened to voice it out without worry.

Certainfailure · 17/11/2023 07:30

@upinaballoon was that in Leeds ? There used to a really well known long standing Jewish tailors shop back in the 80s and beyond to the turn of the century. Family tradition involving brothers I think.

Trulywonderful · 17/11/2023 20:10

On Wednesday, Mr Musk responded with his "truth" comment to a post that accused Jewish communities of pushing "hatred against whites" and which included anti-immigrant sentiments.

It appeared to be an endorsement of a racist and antisemitic conspiracy theory known as "white genocide," which argues that Jewish people systematically plot to encourage immigration of "non-white" people to Western countries in order to "eliminate" the white race.

The idea motivated a mass murderer who entered the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018 and shot dead 11 worshippers. Robert Bowers was sentenced to death earlier this year.

Yes! 1960s. I used to go down to town and then change buses and went past Galinsky's (possibly got the spelling wrong) on North Street every morning, on the way up to Harehills and Roundhay. It was a long time ago and I think it was North Street. Mind you, I think there might have been more than one Jewish tailor's shop in Leeds. Is that an understatement?
