How do prevent the rise of anti Semitic feeling in the UK?

Will the continuous marches in London lead to an environment where anti semitism becomes acceptable? There has been a massive rise in hate crime against Jews and surely in the UK we have a duty to prevent any platform which may lead to unjustified hatred of a group in the UK?

I feel we should feel pride we have a diverse society with a while range of ethnicities and religions but we should always act to encourage social cohesion by not allowing events that could contain messages of hate.

Although the support of the Palestinian people is absolutely reasonable in terms of free speech in a democratic society and it is reasonable to comment on the actions of the Israeli state at times the marches in a lot of major British cities have the danger of including terrorist apologists.

Jewish ambassador says London feels less safe than Israel

Tzipi Hotovely told the Daily Telegraph that the Jewish community felt fear due to 'jihad ideology' witnessed during pro-Palestinian protests in the capital city over the past month.

@Biasquia why should Jewish people have to express anything about the Israeli govt? Many don’t live in Israel.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 03/11/2023 12:46

It’s a bit late to prevent it. It’s already here.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 03/11/2023 12:47

I want every Irish person to tell me straight off the bat that they deplore the Magdalene laundries.

CameleonAreFightingBack · 03/11/2023 12:50

Hmm I have to say I’m conflicted about the increase of antisemitism in the U.K.

I personally would trust whatever the Israeli ambassador said. Israel is well known to use disinformation tactics so I wouldn’t count that as reliable source.
A quick google search seem to bring that there has been an increase but number vary very widely which again makes me wonder what is been counted. (Interestingly the numbers I found were the lowest from the Jewish community sources….).

So I get the feeling if insecurity. And I believe that antisemitism should be challenged, just like Islamophobia should be too.

But I think it’s essential to step back and actually look at what’s actually going on on the ground iyswim.

Also the issue of criticising Israel is not being antisemitic just like wanting to support welfare if Palestinians doesn’t mean you support Hamas.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 03/11/2023 12:51

I'm happy to call Jewish people whatever they prefer, and appreciate the difference between 'a Jew' and Jewish. But I do think most people would not be aware of this, is it's seems minor, and especially if they are young-my dc, for example. I've I've never seen it written before, for example. Maybe that's an issue, too.

BlurredEdges · 03/11/2023 12:52

Fuck it, I am exiting this thread as it's going to go exactly like all the others have for the past few weeks (months, years, centuries).

Tired of it. Just overwhelming hatred from people too blinded by their own prejudice to even realise how fucking prejudiced they are.

I give thanks for all my true friends, especially those who are not Jewish themselves, who have been rock solid and there for us.

Good shabbos to you good people, fuck the rest of them.

ChalkWitch · 03/11/2023 12:54

@CameleonAreFightingBack I think if Jewish people are telling you they feel unsafe, that they feel they are experiencing a rise in anti- Semitic feeling than maybe we should listen to that, regarding what Google tells us?

you didn't have to say it at all, you know. You could have said absolutely nothing. And that would have been a lot better than what you did post.

Well… that Imo is coming from the many Israel has pushed the idea that Israel=Jews. It’s the whole idea of Israel being the one country fir Jews, Jews are a race etc etc

So now that we are in a situation where many people strongly criticise Israel, they are putting all Jews in the same basket, regardless of their citizenship.

See also the fact there is little report in the press here about the many Israeli who disagree with the government actions and are asking for peace and negotiations. Which imo encourages people to see all Israeli and all Jews as one entity.

Lottapianos · 03/11/2023 12:57

'But what good will I do?'

That's such a difficult question, and a difficult position to be in. Feeling the urge to do SOMETHING, but not sure what you can do or say that will make the situation any better

No they fucking shouldn't. Jewish people in the UK are not responsible for the actions of a foreign government and if people are anti-semetic then that is the fault of the people being anti-semetic, not their victims.

This is fucking antisemitism.

For fucks sake.

"Even if you are not directly responsible"?!

I suppose I and my kids are "indirectly responsible" for the actions of men halfway across the world?

For fuck's sake. This is just fucking disgusting.

JustAMinutePleass · 03/11/2023 12:58

I haven’t seen any anti-semetism just anti-Zionism. My friends are mostly Indian Hindu, Muslim and Jewish (Palestinian, Ethiopian and Israeli so a real mix).

Both the Jewish and Muslim sets of friends think anti-semetism will stop once Israel accepts the 2-state solution agreed with the UN and stops bombing and terrorizing a population consisting mainly of women, children and the elderly. I get it - Once Palestine is formed Hamas will totally lose traction with the Palestinian people because the majority of it’s young population don’t really care about taking back Israel too - they just want what they were promised by the UN.

Oddly it’s my Hindu friends who are most supportive of Israel. They feel Palestine should be a State within Israel but most of them are extremely Islamophobic. I think because they are of Indian origin rather than Afro-Indian origin and so haven’t experienced genocide / ethnic cleansing.

Are you...holding Jewish people to account for the actions of the Israeli government? I think you are, but maybe you could confirm?

Surely “Jew” refers to religion not race in the same way we use “Muslim”, “Catholic” or “Mormon”. All these are applicable to a variety of races.

Oh for goodness sake just Google what the difference is and what being Jewish means

I can't even be bothered to explain this to people anymore

I posted some links upthread but you won't have seen them either.

Or perhaps you think that painting stars of David on French and German jews' homes or drawing Hitler moustaches on kidnapped babies or threatening to kill Jewish students in the USA is "anti-Zionism".

You, also, can .... ...

I saw that post as a dark joke aimed at western journalists who demand Palestinians condemn Hamas with no mention of Israel’s actions even as they’re telling them how many family members were murdered.

Irish people living in Ireland speaking out against Irish terrorism is not equivalent to English people (who are Jewish) living in the UK speaking out against Israel’s actions. Why are you demanding that English Jews, who are targeted for being Jewish (not Israeli) speak out against Israel? If all the anti semitism that’s being reported is really anti Israel sentiment, not anti semitism, then why is it targeted at English Jews?
there’s something particularly upsetting and demeaning about being forced to “speak out” and show you of course are the ‘right type of Jew’ before your experiences of racism can be counted as acceptable or valid
