How do prevent the rise of anti Semitic feeling in the UK?

Will the continuous marches in London lead to an environment where anti semitism becomes acceptable? There has been a massive rise in hate crime against Jews and surely in the UK we have a duty to prevent any platform which may lead to unjustified hatred of a group in the UK?

I feel we should feel pride we have a diverse society with a while range of ethnicities and religions but we should always act to encourage social cohesion by not allowing events that could contain messages of hate.

Although the support of the Palestinian people is absolutely reasonable in terms of free speech in a democratic society and it is reasonable to comment on the actions of the Israeli state at times the marches in a lot of major British cities have the danger of including terrorist apologists.

Jewish ambassador says London feels less safe than Israel

Tzipi Hotovely told the Daily Telegraph that the Jewish community felt fear due to 'jihad ideology' witnessed during pro-Palestinian protests in the capital city over the past month.

Case of the 'paragliders' at one of the first marches. Guilty.

Their defence was it was a cartoon reference to peace

This reinforces my view of the type of people on these marches
And I see one was virtue signalling with their "right on" scarf

All three were charged under the Terrorism Act with carrying or displaying an article to arouse reasonable suspicion that they are supporters of banned organisation Hamas.

...

"I do not find you were seeking to show any support for Hamas."

How does that make sense?

noblegiraffe · 13/02/2024 22:23

Maybe he thought they were too stupid to know what they were doing.

I mean, those people holding calls for intifada signs who didn't know what that meant certainly were that stupid. Some people chanting support for "Yemen" are that stupid.

stomachameleon · 13/02/2024 22:34

@DreamVortex I was Surprised by too but it seems to fry and fit with their defence.

SomeCatFromJapan · 13/02/2024 23:00

@OhHelloTheres that's literally the 1930s all over again. I never thought I'd see it in my lifetime.

OhHelloTheres · 13/02/2024 21:58

That is absolutely shocking.

Was the inclusion of "brothers" meant to soften the blow, make it more palatable?

Weirdly, I genuinely think that's the case! I think antisemitism is so ingrained in so many people that they won't even have thought the message could be problematic. It's all sorts of messed up.

stomachameleon · 13/02/2024 23:16

@SomeCatFromJapan from a play book.

There has been posters on here asking for people to go/ be removed/
Daily accusation of 'not human' 'genocide and baby murderers'

Personal attacks and relentless bullying and pushing even on threads they can chose not to go on. Renaming of threads as they didn't like the title.

Might be worth talking to Mumsnet in a more formal setting particularly about the worst? I think it might be worth pushing back....

⬆️ this post needs pinning to the to the top of this board tbh.

I am listening to radio 4 and the first 3 stories in the news were about antisemitism in the UK. The surface of something very nasty has been scratched and I'm not sure it will be easy to undo.

I read somewhere - can't remember where now - that the Holocaust made antisemitism temporarily unacceptable in polite society. We're really seeing just how temporary that was now.

When we’ve got to the stage of a potential MP expressing antisemitic conspiracies in a meeting where it was backed up by others I’d say repugnant views have infiltrated politics

It’s not really a surprise but it is incredibly concerning for society

Politics seems so fuelled by hate. Islamophobia and Antisemitism seem to just be accepted practice. It's horrible.

I hope you aren’t talking about me @Stomacharmeleon and my asking if you would consider renaming your inflammatory thread title (‘the only point of the marches is to intimidate Jews’) when you said this. I stand by that, I think it would actually help to encourage other people to listen more to what you are saying if it didn’t instantly get their back up.

Please don’t lump me in with anyone who calls other people names and twist the situation like this. Despite myself being called terrible things, I have opted not to do this.

It would be good if we could all be a bit more courteous to eachother and respectful when we talk about people whose actions we don’t agree with, whether that be people on this board or members of the public, rather than giving them a label. I think it’s better to focus on actions rather than labelling.

I think we then might all be a bit more open to listening to what other people are actually saying.

PeasfullPerson · 14/02/2024 09:25

Just to add, I do not support antisemitism or Islamophobia, or hate towards any group. Please continue to focus on this very important issue.

Februaryfeels · 14/02/2024 09:31

Glad they are doing something

What chilled me most was the audience joining in.

What I would like to see is all the venues he's due to be on at cancelling his show.

😂

I'm sorry but coming on this thread to complain that people are talking about you when you haven't even been mentioned and then instructing people to "please continue to focus on this very important issue" is kind of hilarious.

Chasing an individual out of a theater for not wanting to stand up for other nations' flags

Did you read the article?

Other audience members then chimed in, joining in chants of ‘Get out’ and ‘Free Palestine’

Yes, I know. But I also have a suspicion the other poster wanted someone to reply with something about antisemitism so they could ask for proof it was antisemitic so I thought I wouldn't give them the pleasure :)

Februaryfeels · 14/02/2024 12:40

@OhHelloTheres The faux innocence makes me laugh

If that poster really wanted to know then they could easily google.

I tend to just ignore the goaders looking for their "gotchas"

Call me old fashioned but i think it fair enough to ask for evidence of anti Semitism - an extremely serious charge and of course anti semitism stinks.
"Free palestine" is not an anti semitic statement in my view.
