How do prevent the rise of anti Semitic feeling in the UK?

Will the continuous marches in London lead to an environment where anti semitism becomes acceptable? There has been a massive rise in hate crime against Jews and surely in the UK we have a duty to prevent any platform which may lead to unjustified hatred of a group in the UK?

I feel we should feel pride we have a diverse society with a while range of ethnicities and religions but we should always act to encourage social cohesion by not allowing events that could contain messages of hate.

Although the support of the Palestinian people is absolutely reasonable in terms of free speech in a democratic society and it is reasonable to comment on the actions of the Israeli state at times the marches in a lot of major British cities have the danger of including terrorist apologists.

Jewish ambassador says London feels less safe than Israel

Tzipi Hotovely told the Daily Telegraph that the Jewish community felt fear due to 'jihad ideology' witnessed during pro-Palestinian protests in the capital city over the past month.

From your post on the other thread saying the Kindertransport memorial has been defaced with pro-Palestinian graffiti, it seems there were enough Jews involved to be worth targeting with vandalism, but not enough Jews involved that they are worth mentioning when promoting a film about them.

I believe the film One Life is about a different man who did similar to the kindertransport

However your point is still very valid because most the children were Jewish in this film too.

People are trying to say the fact they were Jewish isn't why he did it. However why he did it is actually the same reason for the kindertransport. Children who were predominantly Jewish were suffering and being dieing. Therefore they needed saving. So that argument would mean we don't need to mention the Jewishness of the kindertransport children either. Thus erasier identify from books or films in the future about it and Jewish history. Which is the way this stuff could end if we don't stop the rewrite in things like press releases or advertising

Trulywonderful · 04/01/2024 09:58

Or maybe he was just one aspect of the kindertransport story

To be honest I am not sure but either way the same issue here applies

Look like the Met could do more in preventing the rise of anti-semitism in the UK.
Why on earth are they wading into affairs that has nothing to do with them and ignore crimes they do?

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12924551/Boris-Johnson-condemns-Met-Police-investigating-Israel-alleged-war-crimes-Gaza.html#comments

"At this time, there is no UK-based investigation by the war crimes team linked to the current events in the Middle East.'"

The article makes it sound different until the very end. I think basically they have just put up posters airports telling people if they have travelled from the middle east and have information about the pogrom, hostages, Hamas or something considered a war crime to contact the police hear in.the uk. I am sure these types of posters have gone up at airports all over the world. It does make sense for the police here to gather information for any international investigation. Plus I am sure if related information about pogrom or hostages or something then our lot would share information with Israel.

Oh no, the poor boy

I hope he does report it to the police and they catch the pro lot that did this. Though I do understand the reasons why he may not speak to the police too

@Trulywonderful - my DD has many friends there. Now, they are scared to go and get the tube. There is lots of security already there but I imagine they will put more on...
I hope he reports it.

I suppose the problem is they are safe when there but not so much when coming and going

I can't see how more security can help much. Surely these types will just wait and watch a little further away from the new security.

Goodness what a world to be a Jew in at the moment

At this point these idiots are just going after anyone that actually has compassion for 7th October

Plus of course they don't understand compassion and that is why they think he must have been paid. That and it is a trope.

@etmoiandme

Could you pop that on the marches thread too

It is a protester after all

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/jan/04/claudine-gay-harvard-resignation

I feel the resignation of the president of Harvard entirely appropriate given that she did not unequivocally condemn any calls for genocide of Jews and indeed referee to 'context. In any senior role resignation and perhaps public opprobrium would follow.

However the Guardian are now making her out as victim of 'right wing forces' and there was 'a trap laid' by congress to force her into the statement she made during the hearing. There are groups suggesting there is some sort of conspiracy by anti progressive groups to remove high profile black women and the removal of Gay has set the progressive agenda back.

Aren't such articles an implicit form of anti semitic rushing to the defence of figures who quite objectively have made statements that are racist or at least compromised their responsibility in combating racism? I feel the time of such articles has an underlying feel of suggesting an influence powerful Jewish figures in our institutions which feeds into well known and unacceptable tropes.

Anti semitism is the 'wrong' kind of racism for many on the left.

Her resignation is merely the latest episode in the right wing’s assault on education – a project that has increased in its virulence in recent years

That article is demented and utterly detached from reality.

mids2019 · 05/01/2024 09:16

I think if you look at the statement Gay made to congress it was inevitable and direct she should stand down. She has made apology and it was a testy exchange but ultimately she chose her words with deliberation and should be made accountable. I Soundwave thought the matter should lie there.

However the 'progressive' press has made this resignation into something more wide ranging and seem to think there is a planned assault on progressive values by the republicans and in this piece there is no comment on effect on the manifestly anti Semitic statement made to congress which initiated her resignatiion.

Jews at Harvard need to feel safe and if the president of one of the most esteemed academic institutions in the country cannot guarantee that or appears to think 'context' needs to be applied to a call for genocide then something is sadly wrong.

It's as if anti semitism is trumped by the fact that a black woman has been forced out of power and our concern should be primarily the latter which I feel possibly matches a trend I feel in the UK where anti semitism is the ism that doesn't matter.

It was a grudging non-apology, really.

stomachameleon · 05/01/2024 10:53

@mids2019 I worry both about the guardian and the left wing in this country. They are both a rudderless ship and I think it will bite them on the arse at some stage.

mids2019 · 06/01/2024 06:42

@stomachamaleon

wasn't a guardian cartoonist sacked for an anti Semitic cartoon of an ex BBC chair? They have form. It would help prevent anti semtism from rearing its head if one of our best known broadsheets would combat it instead of ignoring or belittling it.

This. Jews don't fit into the oppressor-oppressed narrative so we're fair game (because apparently we're all white and rich and also something about Israel).

mids2019 · 06/01/2024 12:26

No surprise here really unfortunately but at least there is an acknowledgment it is a huge problem and it's impact is greater than Islamophobia currently. I would like to know to what extent SM companies are willing to take down this content quickly and effectively.

It is also important to note that not only is the content offensive but radicalisation and hence violence is a distinct possibility.
