Conflict in the Middle East

Is anyone's mental health affected by simply reading about the horrors of October 7th

I keep reading details in the Daily Mail and I know journalists have been given a video of the atrocities but it is absolutely harrowing. I understand large broadcasters can not go into detail as the events were to shocking for a general audience and in reality I think even written descriptions are worse than any thing I have read or watched.

Has anyone felt some outlet to express disgust is helpful (as some sort of therapy)?

Is that guy a journalist? He was filming at the UNWRA school the other day.

You do know that it's also on Sky BBC Guardian
Etc

Parkingt111 · 03/11/2023 19:14

@Stomacharmeleon but it's fine if you want to have digs at me then go ahead

I haven't looked at either today.

So, is he a journalist?

Parkingt111 · 03/11/2023 19:41

@Stomacharmeleon although I do think you could have put your point across in a better way and not have been so mean,
On reflection I agree it wasn't the best place to post it even though there are many others who have spoken of the impact that the war in Gaza has had on them
I have asked MNHQ to remove the post
I know there's alot happening right now and it's very upsetting
What I saw today truly deeply shocked and upset me as what happened on the 7th of October.
But a little kindness or even wording things in a more respectful way can go a long way

Stomacharmeleon · 03/11/2023 19:59

@Parkingt111 I apologise for being mean.
And I appreciate what you wrote.
Sorry.

My mental health hasn't worsened, but my awareness of my surroundings has.

I personally think that October 7th minimization has an equivalence to Holocaust minimization in that it is incredibly difficult to face the reality but face the reality we must. (Horrendous though it maybe).

I have alluded to the fact the sheer heinous reality of October 7th and the sub human actions of its perpetrators is incredibly difficult to absorb but may be in retrospect we have to face it to understand the Israeli reaction.

One thing that struck me was that of Israel did not have a sufficient security force the perpetrators of the crimes of October 7th would have advanced and committed such crimes again and again. The 'militants' would not have stopped until the Isareli poplulation had been subject to the demonic actions that Hamas is capable of.

We've had this dialogue before though. You know : the Holocaust was terrible, so the only response is Nagasaki and Hiroshima. (Both of which would absolutely be war crimes if undertaken by a losing side).

Don't seem to have got any further.

I think this whole thread should come with a trigger warning. I'm so upset by some of the stuff I've just read here. I realise that probably is self-indulgent, but I can't help it. I didn't expect to read descriptions of the most heinous crimes of October 7th, and I don't know if it's something sensitive souls can recover from reading about. The horror of it. Hiding this thread, just as I've stopped following the news because I can't bear it.
I feel so sorry for people personally affected by the horror in the middle-east, on both sides. Completely horrific. I wish humans were incapable of doing such terrible things. Well, fortunately most of us are. I don't know what else to say 😔

Oh well Christ obviously all of life should come with a trigger warning.

Stomacharmeleon · 03/11/2023 23:20

@Coshofliving at the moment I very much believe that to be true.

iminvestednow · 03/11/2023 23:28

Please tell me you’re not trying to blame the Jews for Hiroshima??

iminvestednow · 03/11/2023 23:33

Did you not learn about ww2 in history class? Do you have any understanding of the war and the Japanese involvement??

Stomacharmeleon · 03/11/2023 23:39

@Coshofliving dropping atomic bombs one Hiroshima and Nagasaki had nothing to do with the holocaust.

It had everything to do with American wanting Japan to surrender unconditionally as they wouldn't and to prevent Russia from entering the war and soviet troops being sent there. A display of American military power if you will.

Coshofliving · 03/11/2023 23:43

Do you have any understanding about what the western alliance did? Can you not countenance them taking a small responsibility for using atomic bombs on civilian populations?

iminvestednow · 03/11/2023 23:49

I think at lot of the dismay that has been expressed on this thread is that I would have assumed most people would be utterly disgusted at the atrocities that have occurred on either side. I’m shocked at the indifference people are displaying to people celebrating in the street at Jewish deaths. The celebration is disgusting. There is categorically no denying that there have been celebrations over the events and people justifying it saying it’s what they deserved. Hamas (the current ruling party of Palestine) is calling for the complete eradication of Israel. What would you like to see happen?

Coshofliving · 03/11/2023 23:50

@Stomacharmeleon the Russians were already in the war, had already won the war. They won it and then got too big for their boots. USA used nuclear firepower against civilians and retrospectively justified it by wildly gesturing to holocaust and all other war crimes, plus had more money and could shade Russia.

iminvestednow · 03/11/2023 23:53

Let’s just pretend that Japan didn’t want to expand its empire… they committed no war crimes … would you be kind enough to remind me why they entered the war….

Coshofliving · 03/11/2023 23:55

Ofc Jewish people themselves are nothing to do with this, but were used by the USA, just as USA uses Israel now. Promised land on all sides needing guns and firepower and mercenaries, apparently.

Coshofliving · 03/11/2023 23:57

Well ok let's pretend that USA didn't want to expand its empire too . Let's ignore Korea and Vietnam and the whole of South America lol.
