2005, Israel left Gaza. We forced our own people to leave their homes. The army grabbed them and kicked them out.
There were 7,000 or so illegal settlers and the Israeli courts ordered them to move and they took no notice. The Americans had been pressuring Israel to do something as an international gesture of goodwill, so they decided to move the illegal settlers from Gaza.
This had a number of benefits for Israel. Firstly, it freed a very large number of troops, who'd been protecting the illegal settlers. It also gave them an international propaganda boost, to say that they were serious about settling with the Palestinians.
They were dishonest, claiming that they "gave" Gaza to the Palestinians, when it was never theirs to take, nor give.
It was also good internal propaganda, all the crying people being arrested by the army. That translated into "Look how awful it was with a few thousand, we can never clear the West Bank settlements."
Don't forget, those settlers had priority for water, over more than one and a half million Palestinians. The illegal settlers took 90% of the water, to grow flowers for the European markets. But - productivity was down, because of an increasingly salinified aquifer, so they wouldn't have been able to support themselves for many more years.
For peace!
For the illusion that Israel wanted peace. Had they, they wouldn't have immediately cleared more Palestinians out of the West Bank and placed settlers there, would they?
It defies logic to say that they wanted peace.
