Genocide is the intentional destruction of a people[a] in whole or in part. In 1948, the United Nations Genocide Convention defined genocide as any of five "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group". These five acts were: killing members of the group, causing them serious bodily or mental harm, imposing living conditions intended to destroy the group, preventing births, and forcibly transferring children out of the group. Victims are targeted because of their real or perceived membership of a group, not randomly.[1][2] Wikipedia

Reservist Major General Giora Eiland told Israeli media on Monday that Israel’s actions in “creating a severe humanitarian crisis is a necessary means to achieve the goal. Gaza will become a place where no human being can exist.”

Oxfam says starvation is being used as a weapon of war against civilians in Gaza, adding just two percent of usual food has been delivered to the enclave since Israel’s “total siege”.

Gaza death toll rises to 6,500, including Al Jazeera correspondent’s family

Al Jazeera Arabic’s Wael Dahdouh’s wife, son and daughter among family members killed after home hit.

@NotSuchASmugMarried I can't see Egypt and the Gulf allowing 2 million refugees in. But I suppose if Israel/US have ways to force them then maybe it will happen. I don't know how much of the General's article is his personal view, and how much is actual policy/strategy. If it happens as he wants - it will be an appalling thing for the rest of the world to tolerate. One can only hope that Palestinians will have a better life as refugees.

There are a few ways the Egyptian government could be induced to change it's mind

''Nice aid package there - we wouldn't like anything to happen to it, would we?''
''Don't worry we'll give you more weapons to keep Hamas in Egypt under control''
''Nevermind the cost we'll make sure the international community funds it''
''Anyway you've already got a starter pack of humanitarian aid waiting for them''
''Yeah the rest of the Arab world will hate you but............
''Just think about it and get back to me before lunchtime''

All the groundwork for this likely went on when Biden/Blinken visited ME earlier this month

Ordainary Egyptians just like us are also watching this all un-fold too - atm they are largely supportive of Al Sisis position and will actually have to live with the new refugees but if Egyptian public opinion changes [and Al Sisi will be mindful of elections next year] who knows

IDK about this but maybe the the IDF could just blow the Rafah crossing to pieces and the refugees could walk in act of war etc but everythings gone mad

My money is on the first option but then I've always thought Egypt's hand would be forced in the end - the Gulf states are 2000 miles away flying that number of people there would be a logistical nightmare and Egypt is just at the end of the road in more ways than one

IDK the Gulf states could take a token few thousands for PR - they'll be more likely to provide generous amounts of cash under the table

Their aim is to silence anyone who tries to show the world what's really happening. They did this, they are doing it and they will continue doing it as long as they have carte blanche.

@Efacsen I suppose there could be financial incentives for Egypt, but I think most likely there will be some agreement between Europe and perhaps the US to take small amounts each, further fragmenting the diaspora. I think it is right for countries to take them as refugees, particularly those which have endorsed the siege as legitimate. But it's a tragedy for the Palestinians and a blatant ethnic cleansing, aided by the western world. I despair of the UN, which seems unable to do anything. I would be relieved, though, if civilians could be moved out of the war zone. I also don't understand why we have British nationals waiting at Rafah border, yet the UK can't seem to get them out. What is preventing them from leaving?

@StarbucksSmarterSister One certainly hopes he's not advising strategy. He does seem very sure of what will be done,, but it is an opinion piece as you say.

All the political leaders refusing to acknowledge that Israel’s retaliation after the 7/10 atrocities is now taking the form of genocide, are afraid to call it out for what it is, for fear of being labelled antisemitic and being out on a limb and exposed on the world stage. Except, as usual, the politicians are a few steps behind world opinion. We’ll get the backtracking when it’s all too late.

Yes this is undoubtedly part of the problem. Look at how Keir Starmer managed to tie himself up in knots 🙄

Edited

He is amazing. A lot of people are very worried for his safety and that Israel will try to assassinate him the same way they did to the family of the Al Jazeera bureau chief and other journalists showing the true picture on the ground.

That alleged quote you cite of Major General Giora Eiland is Bull

New York Times
“The State of Israel has no choice but to turn Gaza into a place that is temporarily or permanently impossible to live in,” a reservist major general, Giora Eiland, wrote in Yedioth Ahronoth, an Israeli newspaper. “Creating a severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza is a necessary means to achieve the goal.” He added, “Gaza will become a place where no human being can exist.” Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said, “We are fighting human animals, and we are acting accordingly.” Maj. Gen. Ghassan Alian declared that in Gaza, “there will be no electricity and no water. There will only be destruction. You wanted hell; you will get hell.”

Really weird the link on here is not the one I posted. It should bs this one Opinion | The U.S. Should Think Twice About Israel’s Plans for Gaza - The New York Times (nytimes.com)

It's time to rip off the Hamas band-aid

Opinion: In the wake of recent events, Israel cannot be satisfied with any other goal than the elimination of Hamas in Gaza as a military and governing body; Anything less would be an Israeli failure

I only link to reputable media and always cite the sources. Unlike all the propagandists here who cite the criminals as source.

Ok The 2nd link is the one the NYT linked to which is an interesting read!
Especially the 4 points
"4. Intermediators with both diplomatic and military experience will be required to explain in detail these concepts to the rest of the world. It will not be possible to remove Hamas without exerting pressure and if the Americans do not receive a clear and detailed explanation from Israeli officials and understand that Israel has no choice. It is comparable to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which led to the launch of an atomic bomb in Japan.
As a result, Gaza will become a place where no human being can exist, and I say this as a means rather than an end. I say this because there is no other option for ensuring the security of the State of Israel. We are fighting an existential war."

SOBplus · 26/10/2023 14:13

In your link that quote still doesn't exist.

Ohlalalalala · 26/10/2023 14:13

Honestly I unfollowed him just because I could no longer stand watching the horror. It's horrible. So raw. So much suffering. He's a hero among heroes. Hope he won't be next on Israel’s hit list as they have a special affinity to killing journalists who report objectively.

In your link that quote still doesn't exist.

It does say Gaza will become a place no human can exist and also says

  1. The entire population of Gaza will either move to Egypt or move to the Gulf. From our perspective, every building in Gaza known to have Hamas headquarters underneath, including schools and hospitals, is considered a military target.
  2. Every vehicle in Gaza is considered a military vehicle transporting combatants. Therefore, there is no vehicular traffic, and it does not matter whether it is transporting water or other critical supplies.

Its a direct quote. And some more. We see you!

"while the second option is to create conditions where life in Gaza becomes unsustainable.
Israel has already begun suspending the supply of diesel, fuel, electricity, and water, as well as closing the border crossings. Yet, it remains uncertain whether these measures are enough."
