Genocide is the intentional destruction of a people[a] in whole or in part. In 1948, the United Nations Genocide Convention defined genocide as any of five "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group". These five acts were: killing members of the group, causing them serious bodily or mental harm, imposing living conditions intended to destroy the group, preventing births, and forcibly transferring children out of the group. Victims are targeted because of their real or perceived membership of a group, not randomly.[1][2] Wikipedia

Reservist Major General Giora Eiland told Israeli media on Monday that Israel’s actions in “creating a severe humanitarian crisis is a necessary means to achieve the goal. Gaza will become a place where no human being can exist.”

Oxfam says starvation is being used as a weapon of war against civilians in Gaza, adding just two percent of usual food has been delivered to the enclave since Israel’s “total siege”.

Gaza death toll rises to 6,500, including Al Jazeera correspondent’s family

Thank you @theduchessofspork thats exactly what I mean.

I think what the PP means is that she hopes Isreal destroy Hamas as fast as possible. They are going to do that and until they do that they won’t stop. So it’s a reasonable thing to hope for.

It’s effectively a war yes.

They can’t “destroy Hamas” it doesn’t work like that, did Isis ever get destroyed?

NotSuchASmugMarried · 25/10/2023 21:26

I've posted this on another thread but i'll put it here too

My prediction of how things will proceed

Israel will initiate the ground offensive when it is deemed militarily advantageous to them and after they have taken out as many targets as they can from the air first.

The ground offensive will all be over by year end, or if not, definately by Spring.

Hamas will be destroyed and so will Gaza really - but the Gazans will rebuild it slowly.

There will be periodic terrorist attacks on Israel and also other western countries but we already live with these and are used to them.

I don't have any predictions about what will happen if Hezbollah use Lebanon as a staging post to attack Israel but I DO think the younger generation of Lebanese have no problem with Israel and won't side with Hezbollah.

Israel has no fear of Iran and might use a tactical nuclear weapon on Tehran if it starts just to show them what they can do. The first one won't make Iran stop but another one might.

All with the blessing of our PM, I'm ashamed to be British.

ketchup07070 · 25/10/2023 21:34

So if the goal, according to the General who wrote the article in ynet, is to make Gaza uninhabitable and force the population into Egypt or the Gulf - are other countries just going to agree with it?

Dinkydaisy1 · 25/10/2023 21:37

It's truly heartbreaking

Its also heartbreaking to realise that after slavery and genocide and holocaust and apartheid and all the never again... We still live in a world where despite advances in technology and pinnacles of education and research and nobel peace prizes, there is no discernment between truth and lies, where debates are held over sanctity of life, where genocides can happen and be live streamed but justified under linguistic gymnastics and whataboutery, where people can lie blatantly on widespread media but still be believed, where calling for end to genocide can mean you can lose your job, your education, your credentials, where social media has the power to shut you down unless you only show a certain narrative, where pictures of dead babies and blown up cities are mocked and justified....

So, so depressing OP

No, plenty of countries will disagree. But thats verbal isn't it? Disagreeing with someone. Disagreeing doesn't actually stop anything.

Israel is a democracy with nuclear weapons. Who exactly do you think has the power to stop them doing anything? And I don't think they will be stopped. I think they will keep going until they achieve their objective which is why I just pray they win quickly.

ketchup07070 · 25/10/2023 21:54

@NotSuchASmugMarried I can't see Egypt and the Gulf allowing 2 million refugees in. But I suppose if Israel/US have ways to force them then maybe it will happen. I don't know how much of the General's article is his personal view, and how much is actual policy/strategy. If it happens as he wants - it will be an appalling thing for the rest of the world to tolerate. One can only hope that Palestinians will have a better life as refugees.

You are not alone.

AP reported that Macron has sent aid ships to Gaza and tried to negotiate an international force to tackle Hamas. I'm not convinced he thought he'd get any takers but perhaps hoped that some thinking time might give people he opportunity to step back from the brink. I always though he was a bit of a hot head prone to temper tantrums but it seems that's not always the case.

The U.K. plane with aid has arrived recently. It’s in the press today.

Also tried to negotiate an international force to tackle Hamas what does this entail?

For all those condoning the genocide and speaking as if the IDF was a moral force.

This spike was before the Hamas attack and there was a general spike of children in Palestine being killed. It all lead to their attack.

The question that I thought of was around troops so that article answers that

watcherintherye · 25/10/2023 23:19

All the political leaders refusing to acknowledge that Israel’s retaliation after the 7/10 atrocities is now taking the form of genocide, are afraid to call it out for what it is, for fear of being labelled antisemitic and being out on a limb and exposed on the world stage. Except, as usual, the politicians are a few steps behind world opinion. We’ll get the backtracking when it’s all too late.

Biden just acknowledged USAs mistakes in Iraq. 1 million dead and country destroyed on a false pretext.. And it was just a "mistake".

Remember the hysteria then? WMD. Axis of Evil. You are either with us or against us.

Its all the same now.

Roste · 25/10/2023 23:39

@Luckydip1 same here. Fwiw I don’t think Starmer would be better, neither has a moral compass. And the Palestinians will continue to be murdered while our gormless politicians watch on from the sidelines. Sunak will finally wake up one day and the reality of wanting Israel to ‘win’ will sink in, hope it haunts him.

snickersandmarsandbounty · 25/10/2023 23:43

Mass fucking genocide.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 26/10/2023 01:45

It's an opinion piece. He's retired and if he's a Reservist then he's been called up due to the crisis but at 71 I can't imagine he'll be in the field. It certainly doesn't mean he's setting any policy.
