Conflict in the Middle East

To think Hamas have given Israel the excuse they were looking for?

Not all of Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he will obliterate Hamas. But undoubtedly hundred if not thousands of civilians will now be killed.

I’m not sure what Hamas thought the end game if this would be? What have the Iranians convinced them of? This was a sophisticated operation, outside help was given for definite.

I’m not sure it’s possible to rationalise with dehumanised terrorists, neither am I sure what the end game will be, but I just can’t understand what Hamas expected if not a total war/strikes from Israel in retaliation.

Relevant?

The leader of Yemen’s Houthi movement, Abdel-Malek Al-Houthi, warned yesterday that if the US intervenes on the side of Israel in its “war” against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, the group will respond by firing drones and missiles, and other military options, Reuters has reported.

@nomadmummy this is an incredibly complex situation so I can see why you thought my post was a derail if you hadn’t considered Yemen.

Please reflect and think, do research if necessary, and emotionally regulate before you post otherwise you are in grave danger of missing the point.

@Enyo2 Could you please stop splitting your posts like that? You just created 6 extremely short posts one after another. And if you need to edit a post there's an option for that if you click on the three dots on the top right. Stop clogging everything up.

That’s a really good long to make. Thank you :)

So first they bomb people evacuating now they're bombing where they told people to evacuate?! They can keep peddling the same we were looking for Hamas excuse everytime they commit a war crime.

It's by design, an IDF spokesperson said a few days ago: "Emphasis is on damage, not accuracy".

It's why more civilian children have been killed (approximately 1000 now) in the last 7 days than the whole Russia Ukraine conflict.

As the Israeli president said a few days ago, civilians are legitimate targets: “It is an entire nation out there that is responsible,” Herzog said at a press conference on Friday. “It is not true this rhetoric about civilians not being aware, not involved. It’s absolutely not true. They could have risen up. They could have fought against that evil regime which took over Gaza in a coup d’etat.”

It's official Israeli doctrine called The Hannibal code and Dahiya doctrine which allows for disproportionate force.
We will wield disproportionate power against every village from which shots are fired on Israel, and cause immense damage and destruction. From our perspective, these are military bases,”

Colonel Gabriel Siboni expanded on the term in a report for Israeli think-tank the Institute for National Security Studies.
“Attacks should aim at Hezbollah’s military capabilities and should target economic interests and the centres of civilian power that support the organisation,”

Israeli President Suggests That Civilians In Gaza Are Legitimate Targets

“It is an entire nation out there that is responsible,” Isaac Herzog said as Israel ordered 1.1 million Palestinians to evacuate their homes.

@DownNative "I'm pretty sure someone much smarter than me or you can come up with a solution better than 'smash it all down, fuck everyone that gets in the way'. "

Do you really believe all the poppycock you write?

If that was really the MO of the IDF, then Gaza would have been systematically carpet-bombed by now and there would be no-one left alive in the smoking ruins.

Instead the IDF are acting on both intelligence and technology to locate and destroy the underground labyrinth of tunnels constructed by Hamas. Unfortunately, many of these tunnels are below important civilian buildings. This is why the IDF have asked for an evacuation of Northern Gaza so they can use their 'bunker-busting' bombs to neutralise Hamas' infrastructure.

Israel wouldn't hesitate to carpet bomb and kill every living soul IF they could 'get away' with it. But they can't. Diplomatically, they are being forced to hold back and limit their attacks or else their allies will be angry and it just doesn't look good on a public global stage to wipe out a nation.

Well, I think it's a moot point to say that Palestine is a 'nation'. It is only recognised as such by 139 out 193 Members of the UN.

"The Palestinian Authority defines itself as the State of Palestine and has the outward organs of an independent State. The State of Palestine conducts foreign relations, albeit the Oslo accords prohibited the Palestinian authority from doing so. Some States will not recognise another State if it was created as a result of an illegal action. This may be relevant to the consideration of whether Palestine should be recognised as a State. It is a subject of controversy as to whether the State of Palestine has a sufficiently effective government and defined territory to be considered a State in accordance with classical international law definitions. It can be argued that the large number of States and international organisations that recognise and treat Palestine as a State overcomes such deficiencies. The issue of whether Palestine is, at present, a State remains controversial."

The usual idea seems to be peace talks, but....

Yes, of course the Palestinians should have agreed to ever decreasing fractions of the lands from which they've been ethnically cleansed. Do you know that the acquisition of land by means of war is the number one war crime?

Who's been doing that for the last 75 years?

Hint It's not the Palestinians.

And yes, Hamas can go an drown in their own sewage.

SinnerBoy · 18/10/2023 20:52

Meshigenus · Yesterday 15:30

It's like asking what Hitler was thinking when he invaded Russia. You can't argue with ideology and fascism.

I agree. Israel, with its "Greater Israel" policy cannot ever be trusted not to continue to invade and keep taking Palestinian land. They need and want more land and will continue their behaviour of taking land from the Palestinians, as they have done for decades, with the full support of (mainly) the USA and pretending that they are being singled out for criticism.

It's just what they do.

SinnerBoy · 18/10/2023 21:00

And yes - Israel has the perfect right to defend itself and its people.

What it doesn't have the right to do is to carry on taking the land of other people- a bona fide war crime, Or to carry out collective punishment, a bona fide war crime. Or to cut off water to a besieged population - a bona fide war crime.

To take land, clear out the occupants and replacement of your own is ethnic cleansing, a war crime and a crime against humanity. Not my words, I'm just defining them here; this is what Israel does.

And yes, I understand the desire for revenge and retribution entirely and fully support the right of Israel to defend itself. And again - if they kill every member of Hamas, I'll shed not a single tear.

Bettyboopsbonnet · 19/10/2023 01:16

@SinnerBoy "To take land, clear out the occupants and replacement of your own is ethnic cleansing, a war crime and a crime against humanity"

So why has Israel not been taken to task for this?

The Palestinans/Arabs absolutely did ethnically cleanse. They tried to totally ethnically cleanse Palestine of all Jews but they lost (thank goodness, I dread to think of the massacres which would have ensued had they won).

My grandparents were ethnically cleansed from Hebron in 1929 (they were lucky, their neighbours were massacred) by Palestinian Arabs.
My stepmother's pareents were ethnically cleansed from their neighbourhood of Jerusalem in 1948 by Palestinian Arabs (and Jordanians).
The Gush Etzion block was ethnically cleansed (other than those already massacred in the Kfar Etzion massacre) by Palestinian Arabs (and Jordanians) .
Nitzanim, Atarot, Neve Yaakov - all ethnically cleansed by Palestinian Arabs with their Jordanian and Egyptian pals.

ANYWHERE that the Palestinian Arabs won was totally ethnically cleansed of every single Jew . Unlike Israel where a large minority of Palestiians remained and became citiziens of Israel. Is there one example of Arabs winning territoty in the Israel-Palestine wars and allowing any Jews to remain? Anywhere? Just one?

In 1948, it was absolutely us or them. And in the context of the time, the displacement was small - compared to what was happening in the Indian sub-continenet and Europe at the time.

If people ask for examples of antisemitism, here is one. It's a classic trope.
