Here we go! Thread 14 for the nicest bunch of women on Mumsnet

Thread 13 was very joyful and very painful for me, but what it has shown me is that even old warhorses like me can get lucky, so there's no excuse for all you nubile young honies not to deliver the goods! Come on now, Mama Hester expects you to do your duty by your fellow ttc-ers

Get ready now, 1 - 2 - 3, GO!!!

No idea I'm afraid Hester. All I know is that all this bding on demand is not the sexiest thing in the world so I figured that a bit of lubrication could only help when it was slightly lacking (particularly as those poor guys are going nowhere if there is a lack of it). The packaging says that it does no harm at all to sperm (rather than being less damaging than others) it is amazingly like the eggwhite you get just before ovulation.

hester · 02/12/2004 15:06

And what was the name and where do you get it, MrsF? sorry, I think you may have posted this info earlier, but I can't find it now.

Thank you Hester, for all the work you put into your post. Very helpful.

MrsFogi · 02/12/2004 15:58

rather appositely named "pre-seed"! from blushingbuyer.com (sorry rubbish at links)

Wifeof · 02/12/2004 16:08

Hester you star!! You've answered one of my questions about CM, but I have one regarding mittelschmertz - can you or anyone else help?

Does anyone know when ovulation happens in relation to mittelschmertz (those middle cycle achey pains like period pains which some ladies have for a day or so, me included)? Is it supposed to be the same day or the day after, or a couple of days later etc????

I've had them yesterday and today (cds 15 &16) plus EWCM. Trouble is, dh has gone away and isn't back until tomorrow. Although we bd'd before he went on sunday night (cd12), we won't have another chance until tomorrow night (wedding anniversary as well ). Do I stand any chance at all of getting pg???

TIA, Wifeof xxxxxx

P.S. I tried using OPKs this month and think I used them too early. Started on cd8, then messed one up, so only tested until cd13. Got a tiny, tiny pos on cd11 - confused!!

hester · 02/12/2004 16:18

Ooh thanks, MrsF. I'll definitely investigate that. I've read that if you have scanty ewcm you could try raw eggwhite - which doesn't appeal to me AT ALL - and I'm wondering if this will do the same thing; will report any findings back to the group!

Hi Wifeof. I don't really know about Mittelschmertz, though i'll see if my fertility bible tells me anything useful. I had always thought it was the pain of your egg bursting from the ovary, so would be right at ovulation, but a friend has told me that she gets it in advance, which would suggest it is a more generalised thing; maybe the pain of an ovary budding, getting ready to burst?

Anyway, it's a shame your dh is away, but my advice is to go for it tomorrow anyway. It may or may not be too late, but it doesn't sound as though it would be VERY late, and these things aren't cut and dried... Besides which, it is your anniversary! And your Sunday night frolics may not have been too early if you had started your fertile period then. So my verdict, FWIW, is that you haven't optimised your chances this month, but you've still got a very decent chance of getting lucky.

Thank-you Hester, it's all so confusing isn't it?

I never took much notice of all these symptoms before so now I don't appreciate the relevance of them. Wish I hadn't run out of OPKs (couldn't get to shops) as it would have been really useful to know what they said earlier this week. Never mind, there's always next month if no luck this time....

hester · 02/12/2004 16:57

It IS confusing, and one of the traps we can fall into (and I know I do) is to get over-obsessed with pinpointing ovulation and thinking if we just hit it right on the head - bingo. Fertility doctors say that often women pretty much give up sex during the rest of the month and just focus everything onto hitting the target, kind of like playing darts. Whereas there is a lot to be said for spreading your chances out a bit, having sex every couple of days over a week or so, and so getting better coverage. Certainly, a few of my friends who have been charting have ended up getting pg at the most unlikely times - right at the beginning or end of their fertile period when they thought it was pretty hopeless and they were in two minds about whether or not to even bother. Obviously this has to be kept in balance - it IS worth knowing when you ovulate - but it is more important to keep introducing sperm throughout the fertile period. hence my regular rants about the drawbacks of Persona! I inseminate with donor sperm so it is harder for me to get this kind of coverage, but you lucky ladies with fertile dps really must go for it! Good luck, Wifeof, and have a lovely anniversary

Thank-you Hester, 16 years tomorrow and I don't look a day over 30!!!! ( I was a child bride y'know!)

You're absolutely right about the timing of bd-ing. I can't remember when we conceived our two, dates and cycles didn't even enter my thoughts, but I was a lot younger then !

The only other potential problem is that dh caught mumps off dd in 2001, and although the doc said it shouldn't have affected his wrigglers we just don't know......

I'm a great believer in listening to my body; trouble is, body is screaming now now now and I don't have dh!!! Oh well...I have a bottle of bubbly on chill for tomorrow night so you never know...!!!

hi girls,

urgent question about persona, on the first month y do u have to use the same batch number for 2 boxes? I could only find two boxes with diff numbers, I've bought one now with the intention of getting another one elsewhere, any ideas? (also is it every day you test between certain days?) help......

Thanks MB.

hester · 02/12/2004 17:17

Wifeof, has your dh considered having his sperm tested? It's so simple, way simpler than fertility testing for women. I know many men are reluctant, but it may put your mind at rest.

Jingleballs, I've never heard that you have to have the same batch number for different boxes of Persona. the only thing I remember reading is that you can't save up unused sticks for use in later cycles, because they say you can't mix batches (but I always cynically presumed this was because they wanted to get you to buy more boxes, but maybe also because they didn't want to encourage you accidentally using sticks past their sell-by date). Did it say that in the instructions? Can't think why it would. Why not ring their helpline?

jingleballs · 02/12/2004 17:19

hester, I can't it's closed for the night! the first time u use it u have to have the same lot number or something.

(munnzieb here by the way!)

hester · 02/12/2004 17:20

Oh and Jingleballs, in first month, it is every day for about a couple of weeks. In the subsequent months, it varies. I used to ovulate slightly later and I would usually get a test symbol on day 6 and then on days 8+. Now I have to test every day from day 8, but I stop testing earlier. I think this is a reassuring sign that the machine does respond to differences in cycles.

OP posts:
jingleballs · 02/12/2004 17:21

trust me to leave it till the last minute! lol.

hester · 02/12/2004 17:22

Oh, it's munnzie! I don't need to be so polite then!!

I don't know munnzie, but it does sound a bit fussy to me. Anyway, don't panic; you've got one box to get you started, yes? If not, just buy one box and then ring the helpline tomorrow. If it really is that important, I'm sure they can advise you on how to find a matching box from that lot. I can't believe it is that crucial, though, or they would sell you a starter box with enough sticks in it - so many women must miss this and get it wrong, can it really be that vital?

OP posts:
jingleballs · 02/12/2004 17:25

bloody cheek! lmao, I thought u were standing on ceremony a bit! lmao! cheers hon, I've got one lot, and have emailed a few places to try and match the lots up, if not i'll troddle back down to boots and get the other one.

Wifeof · 02/12/2004 17:59

Talking of balls, jingling or not........no, he wouldn't ever ever get tested (well maybe under general anaesthetic). Doctors are for women only in our house...

I'll just have to keep on trusting there's lead in that pencil!

jingleballs · 02/12/2004 18:02

( u know he only needs a v v small amount. the tiest little bit, my DH bearly had a tspoon ful, (recons i was putting him off talkin outside the door) anyhow he didn't go full on as it were. ahem. so could u try that angle?

hester · 02/12/2004 18:09

Why not invite the ttc girls round: we'll pin him to the floor and you can siphon it off in a funnel?

Maybe if you suggested that to him the doctor option would seem a teensy bit more attractive...
