Soy Isoflavones..yay or nay?

moly39x · 21/03/2021 23:33

Been doing some research on soy isoflavones & I didn't know what people's opinions are?

I have a 35 day cycle, ovulate between CD17-21 - currently 7th month in of TTC after 1 early loss at 5 week in October.

Do people have any experience with taking them? I read the following on an old thread here about with CD to take them..

My concerns are; I have little/none EWCM (have conceive plus lube) but I get positive OPK every month (temping just stressed me out which I decided would do more harm?!) and I'm sure soy iso is to help ovulate? But now I've read the below, it looks as though it can help the egg. I'm cautious about messing up my cycle so was just looking to hear other people's experience.

Here's the info I've read here (have lots more saved in my notes if people want to see about the dose etc if interest) :)

Thank you x

1-5 = you produce more eggs, and ovulate sooner, with a stronger ovulation.

2-6 = you produce more eggs that usual, but not as many as taking it 1-5. Eggs may be more mature, and ovulation will be slightly more strong than 1-5.

3-7 = The best of both worlds, a few more eggs, and all eggs will be strong & mature, and ovulation will be alot stronger than 1-5.

4-8 = No more eggs will be produced, but the ones already there, will be matured alot more than usual, and ovulation will be very strong. Ovulation may only be brought forward a teeny bit.

5-9 = You'll have one very mature strong egg, from the ones you already produced on your own. Ovulation will either happen when it usually does, or a few days later, but your egg will be of great quality.

Here is the whole bit of info I saved from a very old thread...

Soya Isoflavones are derived from soya beans. They have been dubbed “the natural Clomid,”
As they work in pretty much an identical manner.
Just like Clomid; Soya Isoflavones work by tricking your body into thinking its low on oestrogen. Your body then kick starts production of FSH (Follicle-stimulating hormone) followed by LH (Luteinizing hormone) Which are both necessary to release Healthy Eggs during ovulation.
FSH is released at the start of the menstrual cycle; it stimulates the growth of an immature egg into a fully matured egg. When the egg has matured your body then releases a surge of LH. LH is the hormone that tells the ovary to release the egg.

WHEN?
You take Soy Isoflavones, like Clomid, on either CD 1-5 , 2-6, 3-7 , 4-8 or 5-9.
If you take soy Isoflavones during the later time bracket, for example CD5-9, you shall strengthen the egg that has already started growing producing a healthier egg. The earlier in your cycle you take It, the higher your chance of releasing multiple eggs but these eggs will not be as mature as the eggs grown from taking Soya later.
A lot of women will choose the middle cycle (3 -7) allowing time for a strong and healthy egg to develop without erasing the chance of a second egg being developed and released.

DOSE?
The dose is really down to you but you should always use the lowest amount that works for you.
With Clomid the starting dose is 100mg. Soya Isoflavones are said to be half the strength of Clomid, so it makes sense for the starting dose to be 100mg.
The trouble with 100mg of soya is that the capsules tend to come as 40mg. So you have a choice of starting at 80mg.
Some women change the dose on different days. So they may start at 120mg for the first 3 days then give an extra boost for the last 2 days with 160mg.

As I have said though, use the lowest dose possible for yourself. If you ovulate using 120mg/day stick to that for a few cycles. GIVE IT A CHANCE. It is said that it takes 3months to get the full benefits of what you are taking. NEVER EXCEED 200mg/day.

OTHER BENEFITS?
The following potential health benefits are attributed to Isoflavones:
Reduce heart disease risk
Protect against prostate problems
improve bone health
Reduce cancer risk

SIDE EFFECTS?
As with any medication, taking Soya Isoflavones may cause side effects such as:
Nausea
Headaches
Dizziness
Hot flushes
Night sweats
Cramping
Diarrhoea
Lack of fertile cm
Thrush
Obviously the higher the dose you take the higher your chance of experiencing side effects.

DO NOT TAKE SOYA ISOFLAVONES WITHOUT CONSULTING A DOCTOR IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:
Breast cancer, hepatic disease, prostate cancer, kidney disease, taking hormone treatments, thyroid disease, and allergies to soy, peanuts or other legumes.
Soy Isoflavones should not be taken while breastfeeding or pregnant.
Soy Isoflavones may interact with the following medications; androstenedione, antibiotics, clomiphene, DHEA, contraceptives and other female hormones, finasteride, raloxifene, red clover, tamoxifen, testosterone and other male hormones, thyroid hormones, and toremifene.
NOTE: Just like Clomid, Soya Isoflavones may not help some women at all!
Although research carried out on FF has shown that 77% of women taking Soya Isoflavones on the stated days at the stated doses, got there BFP on their first cycle taking them!

I got pregnant first cycle taking them but it was only my 4th cycle ftc. I did days 3-7.

moly39x · 22/03/2021 11:17

Thank you @snapple21, definitely gives me hope 🥰

Can I ask, where did you buy yours from? I can only seem to see really high dose ones online! Can't find any in boots or Tesco's either 😅

OohImBlindedByTheLights · 22/03/2021 11:20

Never worked for us

Chanel05 · 22/03/2021 11:40

I took them for three months and fell pregnant on the third cycle of using them, though the pregnancy ended in a mmc. To be honest, they just made my cycles longer!

Are you drinking enough pure water during your cycle? Try to aim for at least 3L per day if you can from the first day.

snapple21 · 22/03/2021 12:02

Mine were Tesco

moly39x · 22/03/2021 12:30

I normally drink about 4 litres a day as I know people say it will increase EWCM 🤷🏼‍♀️ but seem to have no luck.

Maybe I'll wait a few more months, I know 7 months is a short time compared to others 🤞🏻

Hi OP interesting thread! I'm in month 8 of ttc and have had multiple early losses. Have been thinking about isoflavones but am nervous to take them in case they mess up my cycle. Haven't made a decision yet so not sure what to do either

moly39x · 22/03/2021 16:38

@choccrumpet Hello!

I've read such good things about them, then I talk myself out of it 🙊 I can't seem to find low dosage ones for the life of me! Although, I've not been into any pharmacies in person, only online & Tesco! I'm like 90% wanting to try it, I think what harm can it cause & then I worry about it delaying my cycle & it putting me back a month 🤪

OP posts:
choccrumpet · 22/03/2021 18:19

@moly39x I feel the exact same in terms of thinking about trying and then being too nervous to do it! 8 months in and I'm tired of waiting and want it to happen asap and want to try everything I can to encourage that but also nothing at the same time in case it messes things up!

Someone on here suggested these, not sure if you've come across them

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000GY76L6/ref=cmswwrcppapifabcc_SCKTNFTVT6A8JWV1W22N

Only thing is delivery takes a while so if I want to try them next cycle I have to commit now.. I also think my ovulation is maybe a bit late in my cycle. On CD15 and hoping it happens in a day or 2 but by then it leaves me with a luteal phase of 10 days or so which is on the short side unless my period due date gets pushed back a bit and I don't know my cycles well enough to know if that'll be the case.. which makes me want to try them more next cycle! My mind is boggled 😓

moly39x · 22/03/2021 20:56

Oh thank you so so much @choccrumpet - I hadn't come across those! You've honestly saved my life - I'm going to order some now for my next cycle as already CD10 I think today - deleted all my other apps & going back to the trust DTD every other day!

I think I'm going to go for it, what've I got to lose? I'll kick myself if I don't try it for another few months and I end up getting my BFP that month 🥺

I ovulate between CD17-21 so it may bring it forwards & shorten my cycle down from 35 days? I have never had a luteal phase less than 12 days I don't think but will certainly keep an eye on it🤞🏻 Maybe with taking it next month I'll redownload my premom app & crack open the 100 ovulation sticks in my bath cabinet I ordered last month 🤪 I also have the conceive plus applicators so I feel ill be giving as best of a shot as ever!

It's definitely mind boggling this whole TTC stuff 🤯

choccrumpet · 22/03/2021 21:20

Not at all, thank the lady who shared it with me 🤗 @moly39x I'm considering ordering them now. Getting a bit frustrated that my ovulation is later in my cycle, realistically it has to happen within the next 3 days for the luteal phase to be long enough and I'm not sure that'll happen. It's so frustrating 😫 I don't normally track my ovulation but I wanted to find out when it was happening but now it's bothering me even more. I've got a stash of everything too, I think many of us feel the same way!

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 23/03/2021 13:59

Hey, I have taken them for the 1st time this month. This site made me want to try them - 22 pages of positive results on soy community.babycentre.co.uk/post/a12154345/bfps-with-soy-isoflavones

I am a few days out from ovulating. Took them 2-6 to try to bring ovulation forwards and strengthen it (short luteal phase). They made me feel pretty ropy - headaches and nausea. V bizarrely, nipples and front of boobs still feel weird, tingly, achy. This plus the headaches is meant to mean enhanced estrogen response.

SO I don't know. I took it because although my periods are regular, I ovulate late, and figured I didn't have much to lose. There's a thread atm running where various people have taken it this month.

moly39x · 23/03/2021 14:14

@choccrumpet I honestly think sometimes tracking it stresses me out! Last month was the first month I hadn't turned crazy and testing every day from 7DPO but I also think it's helpful to know you do get the LH surge.. all so stressful 😭 have you had a positive opk yet?

@A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 Ab amazing, I'm going to read through the thread! I have my fingers crossed you'll get your BFP this month 🙊🤞🏻

I've bitten the bullet, ordered the ones choccrumpet linked so excited for next month now!! I've always sworn I've had low estrogen & from what I understand they help it so will be nice if that does!!

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 23/03/2021 14:37

Thanks, I'll update what happens, good to info share. I took probably the average on that thread, days 2-6, 100, 100, 100, 150, 200. On the thread on this site, some people tried a lower dose 3-7 and 5-9 and it didn't work / delayed ovulation. So they advised I took a higher dose, as that worked better for them.

I think I've low progesterone, so working off the premise that a stronger estrogen in follicular phase will stimulate a stronger progesterone response. But I've no idea if that'll work

choccrumpet · 23/03/2021 17:56

@moly39x no positive yet, CD16 today 😓 although my cm is getting peakier so I expect it to happen in a few days hopefully. It is helpful to know but also means you're thinking about it all the time. It's hard to find a good balance.

@A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 shared them with me in the first place so thank her 😉 I've ordered some myself too for next month as I'm not sure this one will go to plan. Thanks for sharing all of that, ive been doing so much research about all kinds of things relating to ttc it's overwhelming and tiring so is super helpful when others share their experience. If I do try them I'll probably stick to 2-6 and do something similar to what you've done

moly39x · 23/03/2021 23:25

@choccrumpet how long are your cycles normally? It's definitely hard to find a nice balance of knowing our bodies and stressing about it!🥺 definitely good with the cm so hopefully it will be a positive opk by the end of the week!!🤞🏻

Sooo.. without sounding like some crazy herbal vitamin lady; I've read up about Maca Root capsules, read about it purely due to having low energy levels (ditched the good old caffeine). I see it's meant to help with EWCM, or has done for some women (which would be AMAZING!) & fertility booster so have ordered 2,500mg ones to take once a day & will also see if my partner wants to take one! It's a superfood so no harm in trying and researched it's safe with the soya so maybe I'll have some luck! Abit like the thread below, I read a really positive one on the maca so fingers crossed 🤞🏻even if it doesn't help, the reviews on energy are pretty decent with is a plus.

Ps, I DEFINITELY sound like a crazy vitamin lady after re reading that haha!

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 24/03/2021 08:18

@moly39x 🤣🤣🤣 don't worry about that! I have taken the soy, I'm on the Proceive vitamins, I am also drinking pomegranate juice every day after reading it thickened linings in those having IVF, shown on their scans 🤣
I'll look into Maca for future cycles thanks Moly

choccrumpet · 24/03/2021 08:46

@moly39x my cycles are 28 days normally. Late ovulation might push it to be a bit longer. Had cramping last night and lower back pain that felt like cramps. I couldn't test properly with an OPK as I didn't hold my pee in for long enough. Today am feeling nauseous. So something is happening. Will keep testing throughout the day to see if I get a positive. CD17 today, so definitely late for my cycle length.

You're not crazy, it's desperation making us to try anything we can that may potentially help. I'm going to stop introducing new supplements for now and see how I get on with aspirin / soy iso next cycle

pinkpirlie · 24/03/2021 09:08

I've been thinking of trying these so this thread came at a good time.

I found these which are a bit cheaper than the Amazon ones, even with delivery:

www.dolphinfitness.co.uk/en/natrol-soy-isoflavone-50-mg-120-capsules/99530

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 24/03/2021 13:12

@pinkpirlie I might be wrong, but I think you have to take a lot of capsules with that one to get a 50 mg serving. So to get to the max dose, you night be looking at 20 pills?

pinkpirlie · 24/03/2021 13:17

I thought the pills are the same strength as the Amazon ones - 50mg? Or am I missing something?

pinkpirlie · 24/03/2021 13:29

Oooh & d'oh!
I have read it again...
A serving is 50mg, but a serving is 5 tablets! Shock
I've never taken vitamins before where the serving is more than one tablet. How strange.

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 24/03/2021 15:13

Hey just thought I'd update, I have just had a positive opk on cycle day 12 or 13 (of a 30 day cycle). Last month I didn't get a positive opk (just flashing smileys), and the month before it was at CD 21.

choccrumpet · 24/03/2021 17:06

@A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 that's brilliant!! And here I am on CD17 and still no positive 😓 have had lots of ewcm so am taking that as my positive.. you're definitely convincing me to try soy iso next month!! I think a mini congratulations are in order 🤗
