OK, just received a call from the hospital and feel really fobbed off or misled. When I took my "baby" to the hospital I was told it would be sent to the lab for tests, so I asked if I could have a copy of the report. Both the sister and the dr I saw were supporting me and said yes that would be possible it would take a couple of weeks. Well they have the report but they are waiting for it to be signed off. However, the lady I spoke to asked what I was expecting I told her information on maybe what had happened or at what stage it was at time of loss or if anything wrong/missing. She said only a histology report has been done and that will only confirm that it was products of conception. (feel like she was hiding something as she seemed a bit cagey and query my request) She said they can't give results over the phone, fair enough, but then said didn't want to send to me as would just bamboozle me with jargon etc. she gave me the impression she didn't want me to see it and was really puzzled why I had asked. She eventually agreed that it would be sent to the dr as thats what I wanted I can then go to him and go through it this would be about another week. Feel really disappointed and surely the Dr (at hospital) and the Nurse wouldn't have been so supportive of me receiving the results of the report if they thought they were going to be so obvious (ie. POC)

Anyone know what a histology report consists of?

Really miffed now Sad

oinker · 20/03/2006 19:50

Nikki,

What a nightmare. I think hospital staff and such feel threatenend when we start to challenge them or ask for reports. We are well within our rights to be asking and they have to disclose the info to us!! Maybe it's just not the norm for someone to want this info. At east they have agreed to send it to your doctor hopefully he will be able to tell you something.

GOOD LUCK.

rubles · 20/03/2006 20:05

FirstNikki - jeeesus...you know it is a product of conception ffs! You didn't send your baby off for tests just so that they could tell you that! I really feel for you - I always seem to feel like I am banging my head up against bureaucracy when I deal with the NHS.
Who was this lady? Was she an admin woman or a nurse or a doctor? Maybe she just didn't know what it all meant herself to be able to tell you? Can you ring up again tomorrow with an attitude and ask to speak to someone specifically who can at least give you a brief summary of what was found so you are not kept hanging for a whole week if that's how you will feel?
It might be good to go through it with your doctor anyway, assuming he/she is a good, sensitive doctor. It might be better to have an in-depth explanation face to face so you can ask more questions.

I'm so sorry you are going through this xxx

Piffle · 20/03/2006 21:45

Nikki Shock at the nurses comments, what an appallingly insensitive comment to someone who has just lost their baby!
I hope you're ok and that some answers do come to you.

Nicola63 · 21/03/2006 07:18

Nikki, sorry you have been upset, the lady you spoke to was probably an admin person, although that in itself is not a reason for her to be insensitive (which she was). Histology means looking at the tissues ie just what they can see visually down the microscope (what kind of cells they are). After a m/c it is usual for them to check this to make sure it was not a molar pregnancy, and the report does generally just come back saying "POC" (meaning it is simply normal products of conception not any abnormal tissue) if it is normal to look at, which yours obviously was. This does not tell you anything about the chromosomes etc, for that they have to do special tests which involve culturing the cells. This is not done routinely, generally only after recurrent m/c's (in the NHS at least).

I had my "POC" (yes a horribly insensitive term, as medical terms often are) sent for chromosome and genetic testing after my recent m/c, but unfortunately the tissue failed to culture (lab error) so I got no answer there, which is disappointing.

When you see your doctor, do mention that you were upset by the episode, he or she should know about that. If people don't say anything, people and systems never change. (I work in the NHS and would want to know about something like this).

Nicola63 · 21/03/2006 07:27

Just to mention I got AF yesterday, exactly 28 days to the day after my m/c. This makes me feel a bit more "normal" (I always have ultra-regular cycles, excatly 28 days). Having more blood tests today so off to the hospital shortly. Will be on holiday in 2 weeks time so will relax and ttc like mad!!

rubles · 21/03/2006 07:50

Morning all.

Nice one for the holiday Nicola63, it sounds like perfect timing. And good(?) news about AF arriving, although it seems a bit strange to say that, at least you know where you are now. Fingers crossed that your cycle is like clockwork again from now on.

I don't know if any of you remember my post from last Friday/Saturday when I had two high temperatures really early in my cycle and thought I had missed ovulation. Well it seems the battery on the thermometer is on the blink and I probably didn't then. Luckily we stayed positive and have bd'd as normal rather than give up because we were both so disappointed.

muppet3 · 21/03/2006 08:57

After 3 days of morning sickness, swollen breasts and veins, sore nipples and ligament-stretching aches, pregnancy symptoms started fading yesterday evening, gone by this morning, bfn, cramps. A v early m/c, I'd say.

Heartbroken. Even earlier than last time. Am now waiting to see how long before bleeding starts, and how much it will hurt.

rubles · 21/03/2006 09:25

Oh Muppet3 ((((hugs)))) I am so, so, sorry you have to go through another crushing disappointment. Take care xx

Smole · 21/03/2006 09:36

Sorry to hear that muppet - thinking of you.

Nikki - how insensitive. 4 weeks after my m/c the hospital called me (they had taken a clot they found when I was examined during my m/c). They told me they had examined the tissue and I hadn't been pregnant. Turned out they assumed I'd had a scrape and thought this was the only tissue found.

Nicola - sorry to hear they dind't find anything but hopefully the blood tests today will show up something.
I've eventually got my forms for my blood tests - only taken 2 weeks. So will get those done this week.

FirstNikki · 21/03/2006 09:43

Thanks ladies for the info and support. x

Nicola thanks for the details on histology thats a great help to understand it all and put into perspective. I will be telling my gp and will inform the hospital so they don't get anyone elses hopes up for answers. I am also sorry you didn't get any answers from your tests. congrats on the AF I too after mc in nov got my af back regular hoping this one does too. And your holiday is absolutely perfect timing for bd'g! enjoy Wink

Rubles I do remember your temp query, glad it was your thermometer on the blink but sad it got you and your partner upset. Just keep bd'g regularly and relax all will happen soon. Like I said before you never know we can think we missed the boat and we haven't (my experience shows).

Muppet {{{huge hugs}}} to you my darling, I know you have had the symptoms but maybe this is a late AF? after what you have been through we don't always resume back to our normal af cycle and feelings. xx

Well work is going to be a long day I can tell already.

How is everyone else?

oinker · 21/03/2006 09:44

Nicola, I have just got back from having my blood test. I really hate needles. Never mind all done now!!! Hopefully I will get the results to the progesterone tests at the end of April.

Where are you going on your hols? I am off in two weeks too! Smile

FirstNikki · 21/03/2006 09:45

Oh Smole posts crossed, so sorry you have also had insensitive comments from the hospital. x

FirstNikki · 21/03/2006 09:46

Oinker you on holiday too! oh I am Envy now of you and Nicola. Where are you both going? Wish I could be in a position to holiday, but you two enjoy your hols to the max you both deserve them x

oinker · 21/03/2006 09:56

Must dash.

Have to have some brekkie then get to work.
Will catch up later. Smile

FirstNikki · 21/03/2006 10:57

WOW sounds great oinker your DH will be amazed of what you have done for him x

Nicola63 · 21/03/2006 14:32

I'm now a pincushion! (bad veins and also needed three blood tests over two hours as was having glucose tolerance test among other things). Yuk! Awaiting reults with concren but determined not to obsess.

We are going on holiday skiing in Switzerland, taking my mum and DH's daughters (all of whom live in S. Africa and whom we have not seen for nine months, so it is all very exciting). The kids don't know about the Swiss holiday, they will only be told after they arrive in the UK, they will go mad I am sure! the holiday will be great fun, and we have hired an apartment with a PRIVATE room for me and DH (so yes much bd'ing will be done!!).

I love my stepdaughters very much but so much wnat a baby of my own...

Nicola63 · 21/03/2006 14:34

PS Niagara Falls is lovely, I went there once in the very middle of winter and it was all frozen, so beautiful. I am sure it will be lovely in the spring too though. I love Canada (used to live there many years ago), it is the most restful gorgeous place in terms of nature.

FirstNikki · 21/03/2006 14:43

nicola ditto here with regards to step daughters and wanting your own I am in the same position.

Switzerland sounds great never been skiing on snow before. Once did dry slope but was petrified going higher that I would get off at the middle and work my way up. Whilst I am going down like something out of dumber and dumber little tiny children were bezzing past me! how embarrassing Blush Like your idea of your PRIVATE room Wink The children will be in their eye holes all the excitement of coming to the UK then off to Switzerland how fab.

riley3 · 22/03/2006 00:21

Happy holidays Oinker and Nicola63. I too have been to Niagara Falls and I can't think of a better way to blow away the cobwebs Grin!

Muppet - I think this is what happened to me last August - you just know I think, cos it had never happened before.... I hope you can move on from it quickly. At the time it knocked me out emotionally for about a month, but I think the payback is that I have been able to cope much better this time Smile.

oinker · 22/03/2006 10:27

Nicola, sounds fab.
You're spoiling them. Wink How old are your SKIDS? Mine are 13 and 12. Can be a bit stressfull at times.

Nicola63 · 22/03/2006 12:39

Skids are 11 and 12 (nearly 13), seems a nice age, although I don't see them often so it's easy for me to say that I suppose! Their dad moved from S. Africa to the UK to be with me, so they hardly ever get to see him any more (they have not now seen him since September), so I feel it is important we all have a lovely time when we do get together. It may be spoiling them a bit but I don't get to spoil them much! And they are very sweet.
