:o HB

Where is Milano?

Ariesgirl · 13/10/2010 22:43

Should I read Anna Karenina? I never have before - in fact I have never read a single Russian novel and I am ashamed. Though I have watched Doctor Zhivago - does this count?

OP posts:
PrincessBoo · 13/10/2010 22:45

Neither have I Rie. Maybe we should start a sideline BESH bookclub thread...

Headbanger · 13/10/2010 22:46

I keep starting AK, loving it, then not continuing. No good reason for this. I think maybe knowing the end doesn't help...

All Russian novel-reading should begin with Crime & Punishment. I have spoken .

Ariesgirl · 13/10/2010 22:47

Ok. What's the easiest Russian novel? Please no one say War and Peace . I've seen it and it's about a metre thick.

Drom we need your suggestions.

OP posts:
PrincessBoo · 13/10/2010 22:48

Will def read C&P at some point but think that I may need some sort of book stand to read it on bed without spraining my wrists.

Ocarina · 13/10/2010 22:48

Anna Karenina is very long. I'm not sure it was worth the effort, but it was less confusing than some other Russian stuff I've read. They all always seem to have about 3 names and I can never keep track. Although this one's quite fun and not confusing.

Headbanger · 13/10/2010 22:49

Turgenev's 'Fathers and Sons' isn't a slog. Neither is C&P: pliz not to be put off by its reputation: it is in fact vay vay exciting.

Start with The Death of Ivan Ilych - 'tis only a short story but if you brag about it to others they'll probably not realise Grin

Come on Drom, set us straight

Ariesgirl · 13/10/2010 22:50

Ah, cross posts. Who's that then? Tolstoy? I actually did a module in my second year called Russian Life and Thought in the 19th Century. How I managed to not read a single Russian novel is beyond me. I studied the language for one awful year too - I can remember nothing except the word for "comrade" (tavareeshch) and "life" (zheezn). I remembered that because it sounded like jisom.

OP posts:
Headbanger · 13/10/2010 22:50

C&P isn't that long! It's just sort-of book length...Oooo I was thinking of reading that Kurkov - is it worth the pennies spent on abebooks.com?

PrincessBoo · 13/10/2010 22:53

We have that book upstairs Ocky and I did consider reading it only yesterday. I decided to read a book written by friend of a friend instead but will read that next on your recommendation.

PrincessBoo · 13/10/2010 22:54

HB I think I was geting it mixed up with War and Peace. Blush

Ocarina · 13/10/2010 22:55

It's one we read at book group ages ago, and is utterly bizarre but quite fun. How many pennies would you be spending? Actually, I have no idea if I've still got my copy, if I have you can have that and spend no pennies! But it might have gone to the charity shop when we moved house.

Headbanger · 13/10/2010 22:56

Well it's a similar style title innit Booooo. It honestly is a cracker of a read - I was reading it on the Tube at a Crucial Moment and I gasped, clamped my hand to my mouth and went OH NO!!!! really loudly Blush Grin.

(Shortly afterwards, I was reading Kafka's In The Penal Colony and almost fainted. People, never EVER read that short story. It is available online for the truly prurient but pliz not to put yourselves through it. Someone is currently staging an opera based on it - I feel faint just thinking about it Sad)

Ariesgirl · 13/10/2010 22:58

Right I am going to the library tomorrow to demand an easy Russian novel. Though I may have to look for myself as the librarian is now a machine. And it's a shit library so their Russian selection may well be a bit limited.

Headbanger · 13/10/2010 22:58

Oh Ocarina you are MOST kind, and if you do find it and ever make your way to the post office I'll post you something back!

But not to worry if not: books on abebooks are so cheap they practically pay you to take 'em off your hands.

Headbanger · 13/10/2010 22:59

Aries tell us what you choose!

Right. Off to bed. Luffs you all. TROOF! XX

PrincessBoo · 13/10/2010 23:02

Me too. All this talk of books is making me want to go to bed with mine.

Will dream of all of you, bonfires, and various versions of Mr Darcy. Night all.

Sleep well you luscious wenches. X

Ocarina · 13/10/2010 23:40

Found it! Message me your address HB and it's all yours.

Night all.

milanomum · 14/10/2010 07:53

It doesn't seem right though, I just got here Don't hate me.

rocketleaf · 14/10/2010 08:09

Wooooooooo!!!! Thats got to be a noob record! Thats ace milano massive congrates. Don't worry about the spotting , I had that for the first week as long as its only a bit of braaaaan?

Truffkin · 14/10/2010 08:10

Congratzzzzzz Milano pliz to see earlier on (this or previous fred I cannot recall) about no 'turns' and all that shiz. Am vey vey plized for you and your new BOC Grin

I also have news of my own, 3 high temps in a row mean FF has given me a gold star for laying an egg at the weekend and shagging ourselves silly at exactly (Accrington Stanley?) the right time this month.

On the negativo this clearly means I am setting myself up for one hell of a big fall coz clearly I must now be en route to diffedsville non? If not, I will certainly be pitting for a while. Can't really test for another week so WOOFLmania shall now commence.

P.S I'm at a wedding tomorrow but as technically implantation wouldn't happen until Sundayish if I was diffed (which I'm not - going for double bluff) so I can have a wee drinky at a wedding tomorrow without feeling like evil alcohol addiction forming scum parent??

Truffkin · 14/10/2010 08:12

P.S again. Enjoyed late nite chatathon catch up but I quite fancy Alan Rickman. Especially in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves Blush

rocketleaf · 14/10/2010 08:13

truffs get paralytic and have drunken implantation secs, is the BESH way.
