I know this is early but are we going to have an MN Christmas Appeal this year?

Just thought I would ask as the last one was launched on 1st Oct last year.

I suppose I am saying that if no-one more competent and organised than me comes forward, I am prepared to do it. But would like to speak to Soapbox, LL or StG for pointers before launch iyswim.

I find myself quite time rich over the next few weeks while my security clearance is processed for my new job.

So Wadda we think?

I am totally shocked and gobsmacked you got sent that StG.

Such a shame the nastiness of a few spoilt it for you.

What is wrong with people?

NormaSknockers · 22/09/2009 11:31

Bloody hell StG - that's awful

I keep getting confused when I see Norma as I think it's aimed at me

LuluMamaaaaarrrrr · 22/09/2009 11:34

Stgeorge, that is nasty. awful , absolutely awful

did you involve the police?

i am sorry that you were threatened and that people were haranguing you

you did an amazing job and have my utmost repsect

reallywoundup · 22/09/2009 11:36

last year i was in a very bad place and the mn secret santa really made christmas for my lot. I was too ill on the whole to do much shopping etc and the gifts we were sent were not only fantastically generous (amazingly so!) they were chosen for my family by people who knew very little about us but felt we needed cheering up.

St G, last year i was soooo lucky to have been a recipent, and so grateful- you did such a wonderful job collating random musings and matching people up and from the gifts we recieved you must have really done your homework and matched people well (i was touched that someone must have known about my treatment and sent pamper gifts that were natural and fragrance free etc- something that i could actually use whilst still having my treatment)

Anyone who could do something like that must be a very bitter and twisted person, and frankly someone who does not deserve to be a member of mumsnet let alone be involved in a christmas appeal.

St G- you are fab and i don't care where you post- i will always remember the joy that you helped to bring to my family last year.

This year i would like to give something back so whoever is organising it- count me in!

FimboFortuna · 22/09/2009 11:38

That is truly crap StG .

God there are some nasty people in this world.

FlyMeToDunoon · 22/09/2009 11:39

I'm in.

ThePhantomPlopper · 22/09/2009 11:45

God that is awful StG. Am having difficulty understanding why anyone would be so vile and what on Earth was it all about?!

ingles2 · 22/09/2009 12:00

I can't quite believe that...why? Just why would someone treat another Mnetter like that, let alone someone who has given hours of their time?
I'm obviously stupid but I never thought there were people on here who would stoop to behaviour like that.
I'm very sorry StG, you're efforts were muchly appreciated.

aristocat · 22/09/2009 12:12

StG how could someone be so bad to send that to you.

I didnt believe anyone on here was like that....durrr

I would love to be involved however haven't got much to give as DH only working 4 days ATM .

hazygirl · 22/09/2009 12:13

ingles2 · 22/09/2009 12:13

your not you're
shit on a stick what is wrong with me today.

Flamesparrow · 22/09/2009 12:16

StGeorge - you never told me about that!!!!

and quite literally want to kill whoever the bitch was.

Portofino · 22/09/2009 12:18

Count me in!

Buda · 22/09/2009 12:32

Bloody Hell StGeorge. I didn't know. What an utterly despicable thing to do. Why? Why on earth would someone do that?

I must admit though that the cynic in me does wonder if the whole thing is a good idea now that MN is so much bigger and well known. All we would need is the DM to pick up on it and the floodgates could open with people joining up purely because of the appeal. And while some of them might well be deserving I think it would take away from the whole idea of the appeal initially which was MNers who had some spare bits lying around or who could afford to buy a little something or send a few vouchers, helping people they felt they knew.

booyhoo · 22/09/2009 12:50

i was on MN last year but i wasnt aware there was a xmas appeal.

count me in this year please.

ingles2 · 22/09/2009 13:17

We could set a 6 month minimum membership to avoid that Buda... I'm sure MN will ok the name changers

SaintGeorge · 22/09/2009 13:56

Sorry folks, wasn't ignoring you all, had to go to work.

Flamey (and others), I didn't tell anyone because I didn't see any reason to upset anyone else.

I have a fair idea who it was (limited suspect pool because not many people were given my address) but I am not going to name names. If I am right it is because I caught them out trolling and trying to gain from the appeal. When they realised they were busted, I guess I caught the brunt of their anger. To the best of my knowledge that particular individual is long gone from MN so please don't start speculating as to who it was.

I did get great joy and a lot of satisfaction from knowing about the number of people who had a great Christmas because of the generosity of MNers. Unfortunately the few bad 'uns really did spoil it for me.

Sorry if I have spoilt the whole idea of the appeal for people by telling you all this, but to be honest I felt I had kept quiet long enough.

FimboFortuna · 22/09/2009 13:57

Yes that sounds good ingles2.

FimboFortuna · 22/09/2009 14:01

I would even be happy to contribute towards A P O Box so Norma doesn't have to reveal her address to any of those nutters out there.

ThePhantomPlopper · 22/09/2009 14:12

I agree with Ingles (even more so after reading that StG), that MN could perhaps monitor who's using the appeal for their own gain. Whilst I'm happy giving to a 'newbie', I wouldn't be so happy giving to someone who joins on the 1st December, who then disappears.

SaintGeorge · 22/09/2009 14:15

I have already sent Norma various suggestions via email, including about cut off dates.

And although a P O Box might sound like a good idea, in the run up to christmas I suspect the last thing Norma will need is to have to keep running to the delivery office

FimboFortuna · 22/09/2009 14:17

I guess it depends where you live, I am in a village, so anything would be taken to the local po, which is on the way to/from school for me, but I can see if you live in a bigger place it may not be so handy.

reallywoundup · 22/09/2009 14:20

i think in all fairness people need to be members and activly using their memebership continuously before talk of the xmas appeal starts- therefore anyone joining after now is exempt iyswim.

SaintGeorge · 22/09/2009 14:21

Lol, I was thinking of one like ours Fimbo - only open for 3 hours each morning and in the back of beyond on an industrial estate!

FimboFortuna · 22/09/2009 14:27

Oh they have one of them in the nearest city to us. We are just lucky I suppose.
