People with 17yo daughters- an expensive bag

My mum wants to buy DD a bag for Christmas and has suggested this one https://www.johnlewis.com/coach-bandit-leather-cross-body-bag/black/p110804303

I think it looks lovely but I'm in my 40s 😂 Would love some views as it's obviously a very expensive gift and more than I would spend on a bag for myself- mum always includes receipts so not a disaster if it's not right but it would be good if she at least had a chance of getting it right. Thank you!

any kind of fashion item upwards of £100 is best guided by the recipient

get DD to do a pinterest board - or, better, get your mum to give her a selfridges voucher and she can choose something in the sale.

context is everything too. My DS's girl mates who are 20-ish a bit suburban would love a bit of coach/mar jacobs. My DD's much cooler artsy gang would not be seen dead with anything on this thread.

DumpedByText · 10/12/2024 21:52

Just showed my DD who is 17 and it was a firm nope! She suggested Diesel or Michael Kors 🥰

Calloja23 · 10/12/2024 22:17

Personally I think that’s a bit old fashioned for a 17 year old. Whilst they like brands, I don’t see that as one of the more popular ones. . . Shame to fork out all that and get it wrong! Could you suss put your daughter’’a favourite brand and style and point your Mum in the right direction as sadly I don’t think that bag is it.

Purpl · 10/12/2024 22:22

I’d suggest Valentino for 17 yr old but Atcually I woukd ask her what designer bags she loves. Bring yo in conversation about celebs and bags or something

DazedAndConfused321 · 10/12/2024 22:39

I have 3 nieces in the US wanting and getting the Teri Coach bag for Christmas. It's the latest thing. They're 15-19-22yo. I am a god to them for buying them

Rayoffuck1ngsunshine · 10/12/2024 22:54

I’m really into bags and the quality of Coach leather is great! I’d suggest a Tabby from Coach or a Tote bag. If looking for another brand I’d suggest a Marc Jacobs, maybe The Mini bag, I’d stay away from the Snapshot as they’ve been about a while and I don’t think they’re as popular as they were.

babyproblems · 10/12/2024 23:02

I would have said:
marc jacobs
polene
Goyard
longchamps
maybe Michael kors.
or vintage high end- gucci, YSL etc.
Definitely not something unbranded or John Lewis own brand.

HelloDaisy · 10/12/2024 23:04

I bought dd a Charles and Keith “Kora Moon” handbag in black for her 18th birthday and she loves it. She uses it all the time and says her friends all like it too..

It was from John Lewis

Cazwest6 · 10/12/2024 23:14

My Grand daughter likes Longchamp bags
she is 19

Shotokan101 · 10/12/2024 23:26

FWIW - first impressions are that it looks a bit "adult/dressy" for a 17 year old 🙂🙃🙂

It is, as you say, quite expensive - which may be obvious and meaningful to an adult, but maybe not so much to a teenager.....

Does your daughter use bags, over the shoulder or otherwise e.g. malk backpack type?

If so then perhaps something in a similar style but a bit better quality and/or more "snazzy/colourful" or in "real leather"?

Jim

Nantescalling · 11/12/2024 01:52

Totally not answering your question but maybe it's worth asking the kid if sh prefers a snazzy bag to feeding a starving kid in Africa for 5 years?

It only costs 8 pounds a month to buy enough rice, beans, and porridge to feed a child 2 meals a day, 5 days a week while they are in school.

Honestly I'd ask your DD for a shortlist of bags she likes within your Mum's budget and then pick one of them. It's such an expensive gift, you want her to love it and use it.

This.

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 08/12/2024 23:05

Great choice. That will always be somewhat in fashion thanks to its similarity to Chanel bags. But if choosing it for another person I’d get black.

SnozPoz · 11/12/2024 04:41

Is your teenager even a handbag kind of girl? If yes then I'd ask her to go through the John Lewis app and pick out ones she likes... then give them to your mum to choose from

AEP123 · 08/12/2024 23:13

i know someone suggested MK above but this likely wouldn’t go down well, especially for someone who actually appreciated a good handbag.

PS. I’m 28 and I love coach 🤣 Kate spade is also a really good one 😍

A trendy bag amongst the younger girlies at the moment is the tote bag by Marc Jacob’s; the smaller sized one is £225 on very:

I know someone who got this for her birthday and gave it away, for FREE!! Simply because it's everywhere.

It's all subjective OP,
I'd show her it but not let on that it's a potential present.
Go through a few with her (helping a friend choose) and you'll know exactly what she likes.

Like others have said, Coach is a good brand.

LaraS2511 · 11/12/2024 05:58

Michael Kors or DKNY is more her age.

TheMauveBeaker · 11/12/2024 06:13

My 17 year old granddaughter is all about Urban Outfitters and H&M 😂. Is your daughter a bag fan? Is this Coach bag the sort of style she’d use?

Obeseandashamed · 11/12/2024 07:16

Coach is definitely on trend. The tabby bag is really popular with young to mid age women x

Jellycats4life · 11/12/2024 08:58

I thought Coach were having a bit of a moment with younger girls. I saw a girl of 21 (daughter of FB friend) wearing one recently.

queenofarles · 11/12/2024 09:22

Coach is the one brand that has successfully won GenZs with clever product placement and collabs with young influencers and posters suggesting brands no teen has ever heard of like Radley ?

ive never seen a teen around here with MK or DKNY,
It’s either Micro Pilage, MM pillage , Polene , Gianni , or unbranded Canvas tote bags which can be bought anywhere
on the higher end it’s goyard St. Louis , or vintage Fendi baguette, vintage LV 90s bags like the pochette, papillon, vintage mulberry ..etc

Agree. All these posters saying Coach is old hat and look at Michael Kors are stuck in 2012!

Polene is a good shout, actually. Super popular at the moment.

PrimalLass · 11/12/2024 11:29

The teenage girls all wanted Longchamp bags last Christmas.

Goodtogossip · 11/12/2024 12:19

why not ask your Daughter for 3 ideas of presents she'd like to receive from Grandma & let your Mum know what she's chose so she can pick one. Your DD gets a present she'd like & Grandma isn't worrying about buying something she doesn't like.

MerryLiftMass · 11/12/2024 12:35

My DD would hate that, style is very personal at that age. If it had to be a surprise then I suggest a designer version of something she already has or something similar.

Tickledtrout · 11/12/2024 13:34

Adding to the Teri noise. Fashion obsessed DD has spent 6 months umming and ahing about her 18th birthday handbag. She's finally gone for the Teri in signature canvas. Totally Coach on show. On a deal with Coach atm but they'd sold out online. Secret Sales had some in stock and it's been delivered from Coach with packaging and protective bag.
