People with 17yo daughters- an expensive bag

My mum wants to buy DD a bag for Christmas and has suggested this one https://www.johnlewis.com/coach-bandit-leather-cross-body-bag/black/p110804303

I think it looks lovely but I'm in my 40s 😂 Would love some views as it's obviously a very expensive gift and more than I would spend on a bag for myself- mum always includes receipts so not a disaster if it's not right but it would be good if she at least had a chance of getting it right. Thank you!

Coach is middle aged American- not 17 year old Brit
Its a very marmite brand

Not sure about that. It was my 21 year old’s choice on graduating- she’s pretty stylish. Her London girlfriends, mostly working in finance and advertising would choose this. The 19 year old in my office has a similar Coach bag . It’s the non-blingy 20 something choice in my opinion.

My soon to be 18yo dd has asked for the Coach Brooklyn bag for her birthday.

Any mugger worth his salt would realise how expensive it is.

Not always. DD1 (21) is getting the Coach Brooklyn 28 handbag which she specifically asked for. It is stunning.

Oh snap! Our DD is 21 and has asked for it, too. I think it was all over IG a while back?

A hell no for me at that price is she spending that much on anybody else you wont get much in it

Fluffmum · 22/12/2024 16:21

Honestly at 17 there’s some lovely bags in River island

I have a 17 year old daughter and would recommend the Marc Jacob’s tote bag

Jovilady22 · 22/12/2024 19:52

Just shown both of my DD’s (22 & 17) the oldest just said it’s a black bag, the youngest said it was ok but wouldn’t want it at that price, I brought a bag at £40 and thought that was expensive! My youngest said she would rather spend the money on other things

Let Grandma buy your daughter what she wants to buy her as a gift.As a woman myself who has no interest in this kind of purse,( I carry one of those backpack purses) maybe it's my imagination but it seems like the moms are focused on the fact that THEY aren't able to get something at that brand name themselves and a younger girl will be receiving it from Grandma. Let the girl enjoy her purse.

I can assure you there are loads of brands a would-be mugger would be eyeing up before Coach!

dottiehens · 23/12/2024 03:30

I would ask your daughter for a couple of options she likes. At the age they are tricky and you do not want a bag she doesn’t like.

SleightOfMind · 23/12/2024 06:27

Remember when our mothers told us we couldn’t buy friendship?

I think she would be far better off taking your daughter out for a shopping day - she could choose a bag she actually likes and they could spend some time together.

I’m pretty sure gran lives abroad and was having the bag shipped to OP’s house.

Thedandyanddude · 23/12/2024 20:06

Thank you! Can you suggest an alternative?

Marc Jacobs? I remember my daughter going mad for branded stuff at that age (still does, age 27 🙄)

She's in the US unfortunately so no shopping trips for the foreseeable future. Otherwise that would be a great idea.

To be honest if she's in the US then she can probably buy any bag in the world for a much better price than we get in the UK. They have malls everywhere with department stores that sell the type of clothes we can only get in Harrods and Selfridges for double the price!

If it were me, I would instead get her an "experience" like a nice day trip somewhere or just give her means to buy her own gift for the same kind of money (by giving her cash or a gift card) because as others have said, there's a fair chance she'll only slightly like the bag and then you'll be stuffed...

Personally, for 300 quid I think it looks underwhelming, has DD mentioned anything about wanting such a bag with that kind of style, colour, material, ect.?

Merry Christmas Eve! ⛄ 🎁

Jerkaround · 24/12/2024 10:07

I’d rather buy one expensive thing that I know my kids have longed for and will be delighted by than several ok presents for the sake of it or just to look like a big pile .
I can’t afford loads and my daughter knows that her main present is the bag and she’s happy with that. She’s autistic and struggles with not knowing what she’s getting so all my buying is very carefully done and any surprises are only things I know for sure she has mentioned wanting st some point

Yea I'd have to second that! Maybe there are some middle aged Brits who like Coach but it's definitely a popular choice with late teens and young adults. Mind you they have a variety of styles in their catalogue so they probably have something for everyone...
