People with 17yo daughters- an expensive bag

My mum wants to buy DD a bag for Christmas and has suggested this one https://www.johnlewis.com/coach-bandit-leather-cross-body-bag/black/p110804303

I think it looks lovely but I'm in my 40s 😂 Would love some views as it's obviously a very expensive gift and more than I would spend on a bag for myself- mum always includes receipts so not a disaster if it's not right but it would be good if she at least had a chance of getting it right. Thank you!

My 19yo DD has a couple of Longchamp pliage, but they're practical, but not dressy. DD was keen for DH to buy her this today, but wouldn't wasn't a Marc Jacob's tote at all. I

I'm be really curious about where in the country different bags are coveted. (We're Midlands, DD spends a lot of time in SE)

AsFunAsEnglishWeather · 18/12/2024 10:45

Longchamp is popular in the SW but... my dds hate them as everyone has them. Simply put, there's no way of knowing what she likes unless you ask. Teenage girls are very particular :)

Coach is middle aged American- not 17 year old Brit
Its a very marmite brand

Coach is very popular amongst my daughter and her friends at uni - neither middle aged nor American! Not that shaped bag though - they like the little curved ones

TakeMeDancing · 18/12/2024 15:49

My DD asked for a Longchamp for her birthday, to use as a school bag. Apparently they’re all the rage at her school. But its purpose is more of a tote bag—she only uses it for school books, not for carrying her purse and lip gloss around when she goes into town IYSWIM.

WeaselsRising · 18/12/2024 19:32

I showed my 17 yo the photo. She wasn't impressed.

Spriterat · 19/12/2024 06:51

My daughter loves Marc Jacobs and is desperate to get her hands on the mini Sac bag in lilac- she will be disappointed this year unfortunately.

Teasloth · 21/12/2024 18:01

My god how things change.. At 17 I was chuffed with a £15 pink fake fur bag from Camden market 😂😂

But then in my 40s I still think the 90s ruled and I'd still pick the furry bag over any of those!! 😂

Buffs · 21/12/2024 18:03

Check her style. Personally I feel coach is very middle aged American. My 17 year old daughter wants a zadig and Voltaire bag.

Hecho · 21/12/2024 18:13

I haven't read the whole thread, but in case it's useful, my daughter asked for a Coach Tabby for her 18th earlier this year. I think the model might be important, so if you don't want to spoil the surprise, get a gift receipt. I'm sure she'll love it. In support of expensive bags, I still use a Gucci bag I was given in the 80s : )

Coach is the ideal brand for a first designer bag - tho, I would perhaps go for more neutral colour like black, brown or ecru for more longevity. Your DD has a very generous nan.

If her grandmother is in the US. My daughter who is 17 loves Betsey Johnson. They're quirky but definitely up their street. They don't ship to the UK unfortunately. I think they're great

RavenhairedRachel · 21/12/2024 18:41

That looks very old fashioned for a 17 year old

Marieb19 · 21/12/2024 19:06

If your mum is not in the country, this is tantamount to simply giving your daughter £250 as she can return the handbag, which I expect she would like to do. A gift voucher would be easier in future. Good luck.

cassy16 · 21/12/2024 19:31

Vivienne Westwood can’t go wrong

cassy16 · 21/12/2024 19:35

Marc jacobs tote are extremely popular still with young adults and late teens

SparklyLeader · 21/12/2024 19:56

Lauren Conrad has a heart shaped bag in a variety of colors. It's super cute, inexpensive, and probably more aligned with her age. Victoria Beckham has all that metal trim on her bags, so it's probably not a teenage look. Furniq in the UK has a cute shearling bag in blue that's in the same price range. Unless she has stated Coach is hot in her group then it is otherwise relegated to the over 50 crowd because they are well-made and they last. Neither of those qualities are normally a consideration for a 17 year old.

TiptoeThroughTheToadstools · 21/12/2024 19:57

Maybe Fiorelli, Radley or Guess bags?

wasieverreallyhere · 21/12/2024 20:06

WookieMama · 08/12/2024 23:08

A Marc Jacobs Snapshot?

No too many people buy them on very

reluctantbrit · 21/12/2024 20:16

@SparklyLeader These heart shaped bags look like something a 9-11 year old would want, not a 17 year fashion consious teen I think.

They are cute but I think they age quickly.

Letterasaurus · 21/12/2024 20:51

Wow! A £245 bag for a 17 year old! Is this commonplace in some circles?

hoxtonbabe · 21/12/2024 21:30

I don’t think coach is only for Middle Aged women at all and seen lots of young girls/ladies in London with coach bags, but I do think it depends on which one.

The one the op posted is kinda old fashioned and boring ( even I wouldn’t entertain that) but the Tabby is cool.

@WildFigs but if your mum wants to adopt me as her 40 something year old granddaughter and purchase me a bag the YSL take away box will do me nicely thank you very much..In the tan colour please 😋😂 I am determined to get that bag this year and hoping it will end up In Bicester village as it’s almost a couple seasons old now 😂

SparklyLeader · 21/12/2024 23:24

@reluctantbrit
I live in San Diego, having been to London, fashion is definitely not the same ethos as here, lol. Most notably, Londoners did not wear a lot of flip-flops, trainers and sandals. I do not see young people with Coach purses. Maybe it's more sun, more fun, here? What did you think of the fuzzy blue one made in Britain?

I am a fan of Coach purses because they are well-made and they last. I'm over 60. The heart shaped bag comes in brown, and that's not juvenile, but it's also probably not British. A bag a 17 year old really likes will age quickly because their tastes change and they keep up with the latest looks. On the other hand, my bags don't change for years. The difference in how long a purse wears between my choice at over 60 and a 17 year old's choice should be light years apart.

I wouldn’t say £245 for a bag is a lot of money personally. Even for a 17 year old.

Love this brand. I got 2 of her bags plus a back pack in T K Max a few years ago.
But on one one of the zips broke and the other though it had a lovely design of flowers and black and white stripes the coating kind of peeled off so after a while so it was only fit for the bin. Still have the one with the broken zip in hope it can be fixed. Use the back pack for holidays. Have some of her jewellery as well. Very quirky earrings. I call her the American Zandra Rhodes.

leolo · 22/12/2024 07:46

My DD is 18 on Boxing Day and I've got her the Coach Brooklyn bag. It's all she wanted. It seems to be the 'in' brand with her friends. I've had to Klarna it and I will never ever tell DP what I paid for it.
