People with 17yo daughters- an expensive bag

My mum wants to buy DD a bag for Christmas and has suggested this one https://www.johnlewis.com/coach-bandit-leather-cross-body-bag/black/p110804303

I think it looks lovely but I'm in my 40s 😂 Would love some views as it's obviously a very expensive gift and more than I would spend on a bag for myself- mum always includes receipts so not a disaster if it's not right but it would be good if she at least had a chance of getting it right. Thank you!

I’m a teacher in an independent school and all the girls have Longchamp Pliage tote bags in black with tan handles. They don’t really do tiny bags.

My daughter - 16 - has a Longchamp tote for school but also likes one of the tiny bags for going out. I think she'd love something like the Tabby or the very plain little Coach bag someone posted.

I don’t agree with this, coach is definitely making a comeback and lots of the influencers these days have coach bags! This style is particularly popular right now.

for what it’s worth, I like the original too.

Yup, Coach is back in fashion with Gen Z - Google it. One of my grads at work has a couple and she's very glam, in her 20s. It's a lovely bag!

angela1952 · 15/12/2024 08:32

Sorry, not read everything, but did you look at the online Coach outlet store? There are several versions of Teri there and I've seen teenagers using this type of bag, though not usually Coach.

jb23newmum · 15/12/2024 10:03

My daughter is 15 nearly 16 and is after the coach Juliet in white if that helps . Reasonably fashion conscious

My family produced a lot of the leather ( think Armani and Versace etc) used in these various bags and they were very impressed with Radley. I took one to Italy last year and they were impressed with the leather and the living. It’s good quality so I use these bags as well as ones o buy in Italy. We are obsessed in society with the ‘mark’ and not the quality/ leather used and the skill of the stitching.

XmasEveshopper · 15/12/2024 11:13

@Delphigirl who does your daughter use to rent out her handbags? Sounds like a great idea.

Ponoka7 · 15/12/2024 12:04

Bags aren't the investment that they once were and young women now like to have fun with fashion. I always loved Guess and VW designs and still do, 40 years later. My youngest likes Kurt Geiger and my middle Valentino. My eldest MK. Then there's her general style and were an expensive bag would be used. I think that you'd also have to say were in the country you are. Fashion here in Liverpool, is very different to Birmingham etc. It could be wasted money and a teen without a present she likes.

GoldenSunflowers · 15/12/2024 18:07

It’s Longchamp Le Pliage over here for older teen DDs. They have mentioned Coach and we had a look but I thought the one they wanted was too heavy (and expensive!). Nice bags, though the ones with the printed logo fabric are very simiar to the much maligned M Kors ones.

Thank you! Can you suggest an alternative?

Sorry, Coach IS what 17 year old girls are wearing. I have a fashionista daughter the same age with various Coach bags and she absolutely loves them. Hers are bought through thifting but it’s definitely one of the main brands she looks for. Young adults love Coach. I’m sure she’ll love it.

CbeeGeeBee · 15/12/2024 18:57

It looks very cheap in style and quality. Could get a better one in mango if you want that look.

Alittlebitfluffy · 15/12/2024 18:59

Not coach for her age, don't do it!

Alittlebitfluffy · 15/12/2024 19:01

I'd recommend Kate Spade and very reasonable in US compared to here.

MK is getting a bit tacky now.. I sold all my stuff of theirs.

Alittlebitfluffy · 15/12/2024 19:02

And absolutely definitely not Radley!

Adventlandonhs · 10/12/2024 16:08

Most of the 20 year olds I know wouldn’t be seen dead with coach.

Coach isn’t a designer the young people want, just because your kids like them.

I think you'll find you're wrong!! As a majority of the posters have been saying on here. I think my BA Fashion Design and Masters in Couture Fashion might have more of a clue than you do lol!

Just because you think it, doesn't make it true!!

I agree with @worriedworker121, coach is definitely making a comeback! However I would definitely just try to do some detective work to find out what bag your DD might want. There is bound to be an “it” bag for 17 year olds in her circle right now. I think a bag is a wonderful gift and I would have killed for this as a gift at 17! Go grandma!

This is also incorrect, coach is actually a stealth brand in that its quality often matches the luxury brands but is way cheaper. I guarantee this is better made than a bag from mango. I have some great boots from coach.

CrowleyKitten · 15/12/2024 20:48

In my opinion it doesn't look anything like worth that price

Alittlebitfluffy · 15/12/2024 20:57

Not sure a fashion degree counts for shit for current teen fashion. But as someone who also has one I'm still saying I don't think coach is fashionable or trendy amongst teens I know.

Byrotation and HURR apparently!

TakeMeDancing · 15/12/2024 22:06

My 16 yo is getting a Coach bag for Christmas. I let her choose the style because of the cost and wanting to get it right…she’s chosen one I wouldn’t have chosen for her.

Jerkaround · 15/12/2024 22:13

fourelementary · 08/12/2024 23:59

I was going to suggest longchamps tote but if it’s from John Lewis I’m sure she could exchange it easily enough.

Longchamps hugely popular with teens in my town. I’ve bought my daughter one for Christmas in the hope she will tire of it one day and it will replace my ancient battered version!

You don't think a person who is forging a career in high end fashion keeps abreast of trends, designers, happenings in the fashion world, etc., and hasn't spent years immersed in that world, including internships with renowned brands??? Right.

I think she knows a damn sight more than you do @Alittlebitfluffy from Wherever!

You are also wrong about Coach, but whatever!!

bitjel · 16/12/2024 12:13

I was just having a casual chat about bags (and saying how I think Birkins are ugly) and DS GF (19) agreed with me and then mentioned she really likes the longchamps bags people have now. She said she likes the way they fold out etc..

Franticbutterfly · 16/12/2024 18:23

Marc Jacobs tote.

Gemma2003 · 17/12/2024 19:33

AEP123 · 08/12/2024 23:13

i know someone suggested MK above but this likely wouldn’t go down well, especially for someone who actually appreciated a good handbag.

PS. I’m 28 and I love coach 🤣 Kate spade is also a really good one 😍

A trendy bag amongst the younger girlies at the moment is the tote bag by Marc Jacob’s; the smaller sized one is £225 on very:

www.very.co.uk/marc-jacobs-the-mediumnbsptote-bag-beige/1600651119.prd?cm_mmc=google--PLA+-+Generic--Designer+Brands+-+Bags+%26+Purses--PRODUCT_GROUP_p57628414434&utm_campaign=Generic_Fashion+Clothing+%26+Footwear+-+Designer+Brands+-+Bags+%26+Purses&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_term=PRODUCT_GROUP&campaigntype=shopping&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD2k1i3QRM8kMHz_uk7e73GCEWLVi&gclid=Cj0KCQiApNW6BhD5ARIsACmEbkW2VUqHSw93l1NvSTbFop03CmoDm4yQiP1zX2SZpn6R11Ha1__jT_EaAkBAEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds#sku=sku24275208

Agree with the Marc Jacobs tote suggestion - my daughter of similar age requested the medium tote last Christmas. Its practical and useful. However it is not a small handbag.
