People with 17yo daughters- an expensive bag

My mum wants to buy DD a bag for Christmas and has suggested this one https://www.johnlewis.com/coach-bandit-leather-cross-body-bag/black/p110804303

I think it looks lovely but I'm in my 40s 😂 Would love some views as it's obviously a very expensive gift and more than I would spend on a bag for myself- mum always includes receipts so not a disaster if it's not right but it would be good if she at least had a chance of getting it right. Thank you!

Bollocks! I need to inform my 25 and 27 year olds then that they are "grannies" lol!

And one of them is a double graduate in fashion!!

Most of the 20 year olds I know wouldn’t be seen dead with coach.

Coach isn’t a designer the young people want, just because your kids like them.

reluctantbrit · 10/12/2024 16:26

DD just came home from 6th form. I just showed her the picture and asked if she would like it. "No, I don't like designer brands". So she knows what Coach is but just based on the idea it's a designer handbag means she is not interested.

Saying that, she is not into designer anything, makes my life a lot easier and saves money.

She is on TikTok but so far not aware that Coach is the new in-thing but obviously it all depends who you follow.

Edited

Not according to my 21year old daughter and all her friends. Coach is the designer they are all wanting!

Have they said why? ( Not being goady)
Social media or do they see it as a quality item etc

Commonsense22 · 10/12/2024 18:00

When I was 17, and still now, I would have been grateful someone gave me something of that value and loved it for that. But then I'm quite sentimental.

Of all the suggestions on this thread I think the coach Terri and Longchamp Smile are the nicest. The coach Terri looks as nice as several very similar bags by competitors at higher prices (Radley, Ralph Lauren).

i can only speak about my dd who isn’t really a follower of designer clothes and brands (much happier shopping in h&m, next and Zara but had seen coach bags and liked the design and quality of the bags and asked for it for her 21st birthday.

however after meeting her uni friends at her birthday party it turns out quite a lot of her uni friends have coach bags of different designs aswell as the majority of 20-23 year olds I work with.

as I said she isn’t into designer brands but does like a nice handbag whether it’s £50 or £300.

I made this mistake with 18 year old they jump around so much taste wise at that age
wish I hadn’t it’s now in my closet!
taking up space whilst said 18 year old is into
vintage fringed bag and I’m stuck with a beautiful bag that she was in love with at the time, which is far too heavy for me and I would never use be warned

User820825 · 10/12/2024 18:11

Maybe is regional, the coach bag thing. I haven't seen one young person with a coach bag.

I've got a a dd that age and a niece who is at University College of Fashion and I cant imagine either of them even glancing at a coach bag.

Dovecare · 10/12/2024 18:26

Tell her to look through the Radley range.

wooo69 · 10/12/2024 18:27

I have a 17 year old DGD and friends in other parts of the country with DGD’s too. When we talk about gifts they will talk about clothing brands I haven’t heard of and brands k mention as being popular here my friends say no teen wears them where they live or they haven’t heard of it.
I think it is very much what she and her peers are into and that can vary from town to town.
If you don’t want to ask her directly could you ask a couple of her friends what the “in” bag is?

Coach is middle aged American- not 17 year old Brit
Its a very marmite brand

Nonsense! My very Instagram influenced on tend DD and her friends really like Coach. We bought DD a coach bag last summer - for her birthday. I'll try to find a link to the ones she liked.

That is a very nice, safe / appropriate bag.

Gumtree91 · 10/12/2024 18:55

17 year old DD prefers to buy her own presents and we pay her back. I would not trust myself either when we go shopping together she takes awhile yo find things she likes

Bridget05 · 10/12/2024 18:57

When did we start getting so obsessed with gifts. If your mother in law can afford it and it gives her joy to buy it, then sod the rest. It's a gift not a blooming negotiation.

worriedworker121 · 08/12/2024 23:04

I don’t agree with this, coach is definitely making a comeback and lots of the influencers these days have coach bags! This style is particularly popular right now.

for what it’s worth, I like the original too.

Yup, my very cool 22 year old niece loves Coach and would be her luxury brand of choice. She has sold her Marc Jacobs bags. I myself favour the Uniqlo crossbody 🤣

Maybe it is a regional thing. Pliage bags are also popular here with older teens, but they wouldn't be seen dead with a Radley bag. 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's not just about the joy of giving. My DM has given my DC some questionable items, and while it may have given her joy to give them, it's a bit of a waste of money if the recipient is never going to use it, and frustrating that a very near alternative would have made them very happy.

JDob · 10/12/2024 19:20

At that age it's a bad idea, if she really wants it get her to save up for it.

It’s a Christmas gift for heavens sake! Are grandparents/ family not allowed to gives gifts according to you?

Why?
Do we have to save up and buy our own Christmas presents now?

pollymere · 10/12/2024 20:12

I'd be thinking Loungefly or something from Truffleshuffle but that's just my vibe and the vibe of the kids I know.

That is not a bag for a teen...

Firenzeflower · 10/12/2024 20:29

Coach is very popular with teenagers.

DragonFly98 · 10/12/2024 20:45

this mini bag is lovely and despite the size teens see that as a positive.

If she hasn't got one already, all 17 year olds I know have Longchamp tote bags.
