People with 17yo daughters- an expensive bag

My mum wants to buy DD a bag for Christmas and has suggested this one https://www.johnlewis.com/coach-bandit-leather-cross-body-bag/black/p110804303

I think it looks lovely but I'm in my 40s 😂 Would love some views as it's obviously a very expensive gift and more than I would spend on a bag for myself- mum always includes receipts so not a disaster if it's not right but it would be good if she at least had a chance of getting it right. Thank you!

Could she have a nice day out with your daughter so they could choose something together? If I had a granddaughter that age I don't think I would trust myself to buy something she would love and for that price she needs to love it!

WildFigs · 08/12/2024 22:52

She's in the US unfortunately so no shopping trips for the foreseeable future. Otherwise that would be a great idea.

Coach is middle aged American- not 17 year old Brit
Its a very marmite brand

Thank you! Can you suggest an alternative?

Does she particularly want this to be a surprise for her? It sounds like the sort of thing where she could suggest it to your daughter and they couldn't have a chat about the sort of shops your daughter likes to go to. Is an expensive bag the sort of thing that your daughter would like?

wintersgold · 08/12/2024 23:02

Victoria Beckham maybe?

Icedlatteplease · 08/12/2024 23:03

Kate spade.

But handbags are really personal

I don’t agree with this, coach is definitely making a comeback and lots of the influencers these days have coach bags! This style is particularly popular right now.

for what it’s worth, I like the original too.

DD19 got this for her birthday last week. She choose it herself.

Honestly I'd ask your DD for a shortlist of bags she likes within your Mum's budget and then pick one of them. It's such an expensive gift, you want her to love it and use it.

Sgtmajormummy · 08/12/2024 23:06

GM could get her a Michael Kors bag only available in the US. They seem popular as club-together friends’ 18th birthday presents in DD’s group.

Calliopespa · 08/12/2024 23:06

I like it op and actually think Coach is safer than some of the other suggested brands.

What a lovely gift!

WookieMama · 08/12/2024 23:08

A Marc Jacobs Snapshot?

pepsimac · 08/12/2024 23:11

Coach is defo coming back! Marc Jacobs totes or camera bag are also nice for that age.

Pigeonqueen · 08/12/2024 23:13

Coach is very popular amongst teens and early 20s right now. It’s not middle aged at all. My dd is 21 and her and her friends are all after one of the tabby bags.

AEP123 · 08/12/2024 23:13

i know someone suggested MK above but this likely wouldn’t go down well, especially for someone who actually appreciated a good handbag.

PS. I’m 28 and I love coach 🤣 Kate spade is also a really good one 😍

A trendy bag amongst the younger girlies at the moment is the tote bag by Marc Jacob’s; the smaller sized one is £225 on very:

Agree with this. Or just get DD to pick the bag she wants and then arrange for your DM to buy that one - No need to mention that DD knows all about it.
Too much money to waste to buy something unsuitable

Probably depends on peer group
Like school bags when they are teens! Vary from school to school and group to group within a school.

Noras · 08/12/2024 23:26

My daughter is heavily into fashion with a very successful depop page. Her mates seem to like DKNY or Vivienne Westwood bags etc.

fourelementary · 08/12/2024 23:59

I was going to suggest longchamps tote but if it’s from John Lewis I’m sure she could exchange it easily enough.

Creepybookworm · 09/12/2024 00:20

My 19 year old wants a Coach bag when she graduates. It's definitely fashionable at the moment with young women.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 09/12/2024 00:29

Really depends on your DD. Does she want something neutral / classic / to blend in with the crowd or is she more individual?

I would go with something like this https://www.flannels.com/vivienne-westwood-louise-heart-crossbody-bag-849736#colcode=84973606 but it’s all preference isn’t it.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 09/12/2024 00:30

Marc Jacobs a good bet too https://www.flannels.com/marc-jacobs-small-clover-shoulder-bag-704082#colcode=70408201

AelinAG · 09/12/2024 00:34

Tabby is probably more the bag if she wants to go Coach!

but fundamentally that’s a good black bag that will go with everything, it’s neither dated nor trendy and your DD will be able to keep it and use for years so I think it’s fine!

the Marc Jacobs suggestions above are good but quite marmite.

Goyard tote could be good although not sure on the price!
