People with 17yo daughters- an expensive bag

My mum wants to buy DD a bag for Christmas and has suggested this one https://www.johnlewis.com/coach-bandit-leather-cross-body-bag/black/p110804303

I think it looks lovely but I'm in my 40s 😂 Would love some views as it's obviously a very expensive gift and more than I would spend on a bag for myself- mum always includes receipts so not a disaster if it's not right but it would be good if she at least had a chance of getting it right. Thank you!

I don’t agree with this, coach is definitely making a comeback and lots of the influencers these days have coach bags! This style is particularly popular right now.

https://uk.coach.com/products/tabby-shoulder-bag-20/CY201.html?frp=CY201+B4CBD

for what it’s worth, I like the original too.

I have two DDs in their 20s and they love Coach! I'm in my 60s and so do I! Also Furla and Coccinelle. DD2 has a Marc Jacobs camera bag which is very popular with young women (though small!) - it's been much admired even in MJ sections in high-end dept stores as some of them have said they haven't seen this particular colour co-ordination. I bought it online.

What's the budget? Could you go bag-shopping pretending that it's for you and see what catches her eye?

Agree!

I got a gorgeous Coach Tabby in the colour Dragonfruit recently, and it’s been so complimented by random women, girls working in retail when I’ve been in shops, etc.

I would encourage grandma towards the Tabby bag, it comes with two straps so can be worn cross-body, and small one to wear it in neatly under the arm like the 90’s, it’s available in so many colours - some very high fashion ones like dragonfruit, and some much more serviceable basic colours and finishes.

It’s also a beautifully made bag, for the price point the stitching, edging and hide quality are all outstanding. Better than the price point peers of Vivienne Westwood/Marc Jacob’s and the like.

Coach bag is a great idea, just not the Bandit. Have a look up “Coach tabby” on TikTok or insta, you’ll see how popular it is.

My DDs and I are all lusting after a Tabby atm!

BigPandaLittlePanda · 09/12/2024 22:10

Just asked my 17yo DD. She thought it was lovely (although she wouldn't personally have much use for a handbag of this type), has definitely heard of Coach and said it was a current favourite brand on social media. She also pointed out the Diesel bag linked by @SlightlyJaded and said that's what she would choose if someone insisted on spending that kind of amount on a handbag for her😁

letthemalldoone · 09/12/2024 22:11

Commonsense22 · 09/12/2024 09:16

Depends on the social circle. Maybe not if you're the clubbing type. If you're into ballet / instrument playing / more academic pursuits, it's always been quite popular? Certainly was when I was a student.

It never has been in my lifetime - my late mother used to like them! - and my DDs wouldn't be seen dead with one lol!

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 09/12/2024 09:45

Influencers aren't wearing them out of authentic personal choice! Influencers have Coach bags because they're gifted in an attempt to raise sales amongst newer, not to mention a younger demographic. Coach has been trying to change its target market for decades, it never works, sadly, as either the price or designs miss the mark.

The style you linked to, much like OP's choice, is not anything a teen/someone in their 20s would wear. I'm in my late 40s and I wouldn't use either. Hell, Coach isn't even on my radar.

Impersonal I know, but a voucher would be better as that way, DD can choose for herself. Alternatively, include DD in the conversation at the outset.

As someone in their twenties and reasonably ‘fashionable’, I disagree. I work in high schools and have a great relationship with the teenage girls so fashion is a hot topic, this style is in and so is coach.

Ditto, I’m a millennial and it’s always something I associated with an older generation. I think they sell radley on QVC, I know they also have (had?) Lulu Guiness, but associate radley with qvc fashion.

Wheelyfast · 09/12/2024 22:22

Lots of the coach bags linked, look like new look bags in the mid nineties that cost a tenner. Always seem to be worn right up under your armpit.

Icedlatteplease · 09/12/2024 22:23

Thing about longchamp, all the kids I've seen have the dupe. Unless your a long champ enthusiast noone can tell really tell the difference over much.

Not for the extortionate difference in price

letthemalldoone · 09/12/2024 22:29

WildFigs · 09/12/2024 11:20

People telling me to ask DD- I don't want to do that without talking to my mum first.

You have to be devious lol! I have 20-odd years' practice in being devious!! You pretend it's for you or as a present for someone else. She then volunteers her opinion and bingo, you have it!

Has worked a treat for mine over the years. I've always subtly pumped them for info and they've never worked it out yet. Though one year DD1 and I sussed each other out to the extent that we bought each other the same perfume!!

Well, I work in and around the fashion industry (have done for years as do many of my friends), and while I might be in my 40s, work with (and know) many in their late teens, 20s and beyond. But, hey, what do do I know?!

The fabulous thing about fashion is that there is a huge variety not just of consumer, but product too. There really is something for everyone (as this thread, not to mention MN Style and Beauty board is testament to on a daily, if not hourly basis).

I think OP might be interested in Coachtopia, a sub-brand of Coach which is definitely for the younger customer.

Michael kors bags are grim ( imo) and look like they come from market stalls in Turkey. Blingy over branded bags. Never seen a nice one.

There was nothing wrong with Michael Kors bags years ago. They were not all blingy at all! I have several and they are all lovely. I don't use them now because they're regarded as tacky. I think there were too many sales, too many outlet shops, too many women wanting them, and too many fakes. They became a victim of their own one-time success. I don't use them any more but I still have them because they're nice bags if they didn't have the logo on them!

My Saffiano one's stitching came undone though! Still think Coach is better constructed.

Wheelyfast · 09/12/2024 22:39

I've never been a fan, been given several as gifts through old job. Hospice charity shop did pretty well out of them though @letthemalldoone

I like a bag up under my armpit. I can keep it safe!

I don't think they look like New Look bags in the 90s but then I never looked at them never mind bought one!

mitogoshigg · 09/12/2024 22:45

@Wheelyfast

Both my DD's have multiple Radley bags, dsd has one too, all early 20's

I did used to like them and have a couple of really nice, soft-leather bucket bags!

I never part with a handbag, just in case!

I never had a job that rewarded me with handbags either.

juldan · 09/12/2024 22:49

@WildFigs
My own 17 year old Brit DD has had this bag on a top of her wish list for a while.
I am thinking about getting it for her 18th birthday if she still fancies it.

Wheelyfast · 09/12/2024 22:52

@letthemalldoone I didn't own one either, just not my thing. Always collected bags & have a handbag room . Used to work in a particular field I would see the incoming trends/fashion so would buy through trade and if my sales were good would be given bags as a bonus some great some very much not my taste and would be passed to hospice charities

Agree - Coach is having a bit of a moment and totally don’t agree with @JollyHollyMe that it’s a middle aged brand at all.

However the Tabby in a bright colour might be more appealing than this one to a teen. I think for this amount of money it’s worth asking the recipient!

I have a lot of bags but not enough for a handbag room sadly. I could do with a shoe room. I am drowning in shoes and I can't help myself!

I've worked most of my life in the public sector so sadly not free anything - we can't even have a cup of tea any more!!

GM could get her a Michael Kors bag only available in the US. They seem popular as club-together friends’ 18th birthday presents in DD’s group.

TK Maxx sell MK bags I got 1 for my DD last year. So they're not only available in the US.

Adventlandonhs · 09/12/2024 23:27

Coach is for grannies, not 17 year olds. She isn’t going to want that.

The poster never said they were only available in the US, read it again.

Wheelyfast · 09/12/2024 23:48

@mitogoshigg that's nice for them, each to their own but it's not a "young"' brand. Where I am the only people carrying Radley bags are ladies who appear to be 60+ ( I've never asked their age) same when I've been to other towns/cities.

Bollocks! I need to inform my 25 and 27 year olds then that they are "grannies" lol!

And one of them is a double graduate in fashion!!
