People with 17yo daughters- an expensive bag

My mum wants to buy DD a bag for Christmas and has suggested this one https://www.johnlewis.com/coach-bandit-leather-cross-body-bag/black/p110804303

I think it looks lovely but I'm in my 40s 😂 Would love some views as it's obviously a very expensive gift and more than I would spend on a bag for myself- mum always includes receipts so not a disaster if it's not right but it would be good if she at least had a chance of getting it right. Thank you!

That one is too staid in my opinion. It would be better to go with a Ciach sling bag or a dressy one with chain. Pricey though

Coach is making a big comeback over here, especially the small styles. Marc Jacobs is always a fave too

reluctantbrit · 09/12/2024 07:51

Depends a lot on your teen. Does she actually use a handbag?

I don't think DD has used a "normal" handbag for quite a while. She takes a small leather backpack if she needs something a bit more formal or otherwise a fabric tote if she has to carry more than her keys and phone.
None of her friends uses handbags either.

I would ask your DD to look up bags and send you suggestions. Maybe add that it can be something US exclusive.

FrenchandSaunders · 09/12/2024 07:55

My DD is 23 and has just bought a coach bag like that.

florasl · 09/12/2024 08:16

I had Coach handbags as a teen in America, they were very fashionable in my upper middle class high school in the 2010s. I still see lots of younger girls wearing Coach.

socks1107 · 09/12/2024 08:26

My teens that age love carvela. Look at shoeholics as there is often deals on there

Radley is what my DD's like, slightly cheaper too.

Dd has this one:

Strange I see this post, I’ve got a Christmas card here for the Mum of Coach’s creative director. I was hoping she’d send my DD a bag 😂

If I was you OP I’d get DD to chose something she really wants and grandma can send you the money if you order it here. They’re so fussy at that age.

I was going to suggest longchamps tote but if it’s from John Lewis I’m sure she could exchange it easily enough.

I'm in Sweden and my 17 year and her friends all want the Longchamps tote. I had no idea they were back in again. I had to order it from the Longchamp website.

alpinia · 09/12/2024 08:51

Coach Tabby, Marc Jacobs camera bags and Longchamps le pliage tote bags are all very in these days for younger women and girls, and at the lower end of the designer market. I see many Tabby's and Le Pliage on the commute and in the office. Michael Kors is not really 'in' anymore.

Widowtoo · 09/12/2024 08:56

Here they’re all into the Zadig Rock clutches just to throw another one into the mix

saltysquid · 09/12/2024 09:00

Coach is a classic bag, the Brookyln is very in right now. Polene is good, maybe more expensive though. Agree with someone above who said Longchamp.

whyamiawakestillitssolate · 09/12/2024 09:00

My dd15 loves her Kate Spade bag (also an extravagant grandparent present!) which is a similar price. The one she has looks very similar to a prada bag - maybe an option?

Wheelyfast · 09/12/2024 09:05

Radley?! Never ever been a young brand , & definitely not now

DancingNotDrowning · 09/12/2024 09:10

20 year old DD favours her own Marc Jacobs snapshot or tote and will steal my YSL LouLou’s if she thinks I won’t notice.

14 yr old DD linked longchamp

At that price point I’d ask for some ideas - it’s very personal.

I don’t agree with this, coach is definitely making a comeback and lots of the influencers these days have coach bags! This style is particularly popular right now.

for what it’s worth, I like the original too.

Agree!

I got a gorgeous Coach Tabby in the colour Dragonfruit recently, and it’s been so complimented by random women, girls working in retail when I’ve been in shops, etc.

I would encourage grandma towards the Tabby bag, it comes with two straps so can be worn cross-body, and small one to wear it in neatly under the arm like the 90’s, it’s available in so many colours - some very high fashion ones like dragonfruit, and some much more serviceable basic colours and finishes.

It’s also a beautifully made bag, for the price point the stitching, edging and hide quality are all outstanding. Better than the price point peers of Vivienne Westwood/Marc Jacob’s and the like.

Coach bag is a great idea, just not the Bandit. Have a look up “Coach tabby” on TikTok or insta, you’ll see how popular it is.

Honestly I'd ask your DD for a shortlist of bags she likes within your Mum's budget and then pick one of them. It's such an expensive gift, you want her to love it and use it.

Absolutely this, which I do with my grandchildren

Depends on the social circle. Maybe not if you're the clubbing type. If you're into ballet / instrument playing / more academic pursuits, it's always been quite popular? Certainly was when I was a student.

WildFigs · 09/12/2024 09:20

Thanks, everyone- this is all really helpful. I've emailed my mum suggesting we get input from DD so will see what she thinks of that.

@Commonsense22 when were you a student? I was given one of their first Christmas bags (no idea why the giver chose it, I do collect bags but radley ? Nope I think I was late teend early twenties) there bags are mostly "jazzy"

Influencers aren't wearing them out of authentic personal choice! Influencers have Coach bags because they're gifted in an attempt to raise sales amongst newer, not to mention a younger demographic. Coach has been trying to change its target market for decades, it never works, sadly, as either the price or designs miss the mark.

The style you linked to, much like OP's choice, is not anything a teen/someone in their 20s would wear. I'm in my late 40s and I wouldn't use either. Hell, Coach isn't even on my radar.

Impersonal I know, but a voucher would be better as that way, DD can choose for herself. Alternatively, include DD in the conversation at the outset.

User820825 · 09/12/2024 10:17

Well,said @bunnybunnybunnybunny

kaela100 · 09/12/2024 10:30

redskydarknight · 09/12/2024 07:47

My DD would think that an obscene amount of money to spend on a bag and be worried about using it. So hopefully this isn't the case for OP's DD?

Secondly, if you are going to spend that sort of money on a bag, then you want it to be a bag that she really loves, not just one that's tolerable or "ok".

I think you need to involve your DD in this decision.

You need to view it as an investment and understand that high end pieces never go out of style. Even a 400-500 prada/lv bag will always be in vogue / acceptable even when it's not in fashion.
