People with 17yo daughters- an expensive bag

WildFigs · 08/12/2024 22:46

My mum wants to buy DD a bag for Christmas and has suggested this one https://www.johnlewis.com/coach-bandit-leather-cross-body-bag/black/p110804303

I think it looks lovely but I'm in my 40s 😂 Would love some views as it's obviously a very expensive gift and more than I would spend on a bag for myself- mum always includes receipts so not a disaster if it's not right but it would be good if she at least had a chance of getting it right. Thank you!

Not many teens think of handbags as investment pieces though ( I used to have massive collection but have sold pieces over the years, but if think I'm in the minority?) I collected from early teens, I lent a "friend" a bulgari bag, and she ruined it her parents offered £20 to buy a replacement because that what"expensive bags cost"

ChampagneLassie · 09/12/2024 10:51

What a lovely GM. I think many 17 year olds don’t have a clue style wise so it might be better just gifting her one you think would suit. They’ve all lovely and classic. Or sending her a load of these links suggested and asking which she’d prefer. What are her friends carrying?

Apocketfulofposies · 09/12/2024 10:54

I would actually ask your dd - I have been the recipient of a few bags as gifts in the past and though I am always polite, they are never quite right. I think bags are as personal as jewellery

loobylou44 · 09/12/2024 11:05

100% you need to ask your daughter. I have 20 and 18 year old daughters and both have entirely different tastes in everything! Neither of them use a bag though.

WildFigs · 09/12/2024 11:20

People telling me to ask DD- I don't want to do that without talking to my mum first.

You need to view it as an investment and understand that high end pieces never go out of style. Even a 400-500 prada/lv bag will always be in vogue / acceptable even when it's not in fashion.

Will a 17 year old care about that though? If GM wants to gift them an investment, they would be better off with an ISA or money in a pension.

I'm sure a 17 year old would rather have the money :)

Honestly I'd ask your DD for a shortlist of bags she likes within your Mum's budget and then pick one of them. It's such an expensive gift, you want her to love it and use it.

This.

My daughter is slightly older than yours and she would hate that bag and then feel guilty because it cost so much .

Coach is middle aged American- not 17 year old Brit
Its a very marmite brand

My 17yo British DD & all her friends disagree.

Coach are having a huge revival with the teens - must be being marketed strongly on socials. I have no idea why they are so popular with teenage girls but Coach is absolutely high status & desirable with them right now.

That has changed... Bella Hadid Made them "trendy" graziadaily.co.uk/fashion/shopping/coach-black-friday-sale/

My 14yo loves coach bags!

I don’t agree with this at all, my work colleagues in their late teens and early 20s all have coach bags and dd(21) just got one for her 21st birthday as did a few of her friends.

lateatwork · 09/12/2024 11:45

Longchamp pilage

queenofarles · 09/12/2024 11:55

Coach is actually really popular with late teens and yearly 20s year olds , but not the one you linked unfortunately , the teri and tabby models are your best choice for a 17 year old.

Hadjab · 09/12/2024 12:11

My 17 year old has asked for a Longchamp mini

Do show me the “always in fashion” Louis Vuitton or Prada bag that can be bought for £400?

It doesn’t exist. Neither LV or Prada operate in the £400-500 handbag market.

The Teri looks interesting and is one that I could suggest to my mum- I don't want to go back to her with a more expensive suggestion (eg Tabby) because I think she's already spending a lot. Thank you.

Definitely do this! Your mum doesn't have to know.

Does it matter, if she likes it?

DD would just ask me why she should think to ask fora bag she could still use in 20 years.

While it's applaudeble to avoid fast fashion, I think finding something OP's DD likes now is more important.

TeenLifeMum · 09/12/2024 12:58

It’s quite a classic style so go for it and include a gift receipt. John Lewis will have lots of choice and she can swap it if she wants.

memyselfi · 09/12/2024 13:05

Coach is very trendy with the young ones .
Michael Kors is a copycat designer who doesn't deserve the dwindling popularity he has .

bitjel · 09/12/2024 13:05

I'd only buy a demellier, longchamp or polene or a strathberry or miu miu maybe

queenofarles · 09/12/2024 13:13

while true it doesn’t exist, but thanks to the popularity of designer thrifting more and more young girls are into 90s and early 2000s Prada , Vuitton , fendi , mulberry And the majority are placed within the £400-£500 price bracket .
my DD loves my 2002 Vuitton Leonor bag , it’s such a unique bag and goes so well with her style.

Wheelyfast · 09/12/2024 13:13

This is why she should choose her own, handbags are a minefield I would not want demellier or strawberry I think they look like Margaret Thatcher bags.

Never liked Michael Kors. However, my Coach bags are well made and have lasted.

I have some classic LV bags I never use now. I ought to pass them on to DILs if they're interested.

I don’t agree with this, coach is definitely making a comeback and lots of the influencers these days have coach bags! This style is particularly popular right now.

https://uk.coach.com/products/tabby-shoulder-bag-20/CY201.html?frp=CY201+B4CBD

for what it’s worth, I like the original too.

Yes agree- coach isn’t a brand as a millennial I was keen on, but it’s all over TikTok with gen z loving it. The tabby bag is particularly popular and this what I was going to suggest!
