So what supermarket substitutions have you had in your xmas shop? I was expecting a couple, but most were like for like...

This is the most annoying one:

Sainsbury's Milk Chocolate Yule Log, Taste the Difference 442g,
substituted with

  • Sainsbury's Raspberry Sponge Roll, Taste the Difference 268g

Ocado:

Ours weren't too bad.

Fancy chestnut stuffing for Paxo...meh.

Galia melon for cantaloupe.

Mozzarella balls for large buffalo mozzarella.

No little gem. Will ask DH to grab some lettuce from Co-op in the morning.

No salami Milano (but we have leftover from yesterday which will be fine for tomorrow).

All-in-all, forgivable. The main bits arrived as expected.

Itshandled · 24/12/2022 00:10

No sprouts and no substitution offered.

ODFOx · 24/12/2022 00:11

My one sub was rosemary and salt thins £££ instead of melba toast £. They are delicious though they won't go with the fish pate I'm making.
I can make my own melba toast in emergency, should melba toast be required, so overall a very successful click and collect!

I always have my delivery on a Friday and I am going to family for Christmas dinner so today was just my usual weekly shop. Was expecting carnage but wasn't too bad - 1 unavailable, 1 sub I didn't want and my usual 75cl Gordon's Gin was subbed with a litre instead for the same price, result! (Suspect it only happened because of Christmas busyness.)

However milk had leaked over everything. I mean everything. My chicken packet had split so milk was inside, it's under the yoghurt lids, all cardboard packaging sodden. Bread bag tape broken so bread was open, egg also broken. Worst it's been for a while.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/12/2022 00:27

DH did a Waitrose click and collect this morning - all present and correct, as far as I can see.

He did get 'essential for Xmas' things like cheese biscuits, king edwards potatoes, the gammon and mince pies earlier, and the meat from the local farm shop.

A few minor subs eg chicken gravy granules for turkey gravy granules which I rejected. Puzzled though about one sub- one Hovis whole meal loaf instead of 2 Warburton's loaves - why not 2? This has happened before albeit with a different supermarket who subbed one bottle of wine for the two I had originally ordered.

SuperSue77 · 24/12/2022 00:54

I’m really enjoying this thread which I’m sure must make me a weirdo - never thought I’d be so captivated by what other people have ordered from the supermarket!
I had an Asda delivery this evening, 1 no show which was sellotape, but luckily haven’t run out at home yet. The bottle of Barolo that I didn’t need (had already got another red in for Christmas lunch) but fancied as it was at a good price had been subbed for Jacob's Creek Double Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon - rejected. And 2 packs of Castello Danish blue subbed for the creamy version - also rejected. They had also cancelled the prunes from my order earlier.
Sainsburys are due in the morning (I split the shop between the two so that if I don’t get things delivered by Asda I have a second chance with Sainsburys the next day!) so will update once that delivery has been. Really hope they bring my potatoes, sprouts and parsnips, really can’t do without those!

Has anyone ever managed to get "fresh" turkey gravy from Tesco?! I've been hosting my own Christmas for nearly 10 years and EVERY year I try to get turkey gravy and EVERY year it is subbed, wondering if it's just me?! Was a good sub this year though, fresh chicken gravy instead of granules Smile

CheesyChipsOnWembleyWay · 24/12/2022 08:29

Turkey gravy substituted for Chicken gravy here too. Could have been worse,

I'm jealous of all the Yule logs! Our Yule log was substituted for a free from Victoria sponge which looks as dry as it sounds. Tried to hand it back but the lovely lady just said keep it and we will refund you.

We had lots of substitutions (sabra lovely hummus for tesco gross reduced fat hummus stacker 🤮)

My favourite one was:

3 x finest ready made Turkey gravy

For

4 x tubs bisto chicken gravy granules.

I'm trying to imagine the absolute river of gravy you could make with 4 tubs of granules.

I got the same Tesco substitution!

DoorbellMadness · 24/12/2022 08:34

sigh

Most of it is forgivable but apple sauce instead of cranberry won’t go down well, cheese twists instead of a cracker selection for the 3 packs of cheddar with caramelised onion 😳

Looks like I’m off to Tesco this morning!! Wish me luck!

A dozen green apples for apple sauce. Appalled at the sensibility and that I have no excuse not to make the apple sauce myself.

Unsuredad123 · 24/12/2022 08:37

Just waiting in the Xmas shop, we will be having a Colin the caterpillar cake instead of a yule log, and a third less pork pie and smoked salmon.

NCTDN · 24/12/2022 08:41

EatYourVegetables · 23/12/2022 16:12

Oh, no bad subs, but the entire Christmas dinner was missing! No bird, ham, pigs in blankets, stuffing, potatoes, carrots or yule log! We did get 3 parsnips so we’ll share that with some gravy.

That's beyond unlucky! Hope you are sorted

SuperSue77 · 24/12/2022 09:14

Can’t really complain at my Sainsburys delivery - no fresh salmon filets (but it was just to have in for a meal option one day, I wasn’t relying on it) and my bread for the kids has a short life, but it’s going in the freezer anyway.
I live in a highly populated part of the country so maybe that explains why I’ve not had such difficulty with subs, more people, so more stock on the shelves?

Mmsnetternewbie · 24/12/2022 09:23

We ordered pizzas for a Christmas Eve movie with the kids and the pizza was out of stock so instead they substituted for 7, yes 7 packs of three dip stackers! We will just drink that for tea instead then? The delivery driver was flummoxed 😶

What I will complain about is they arrived early and I was still in my PJs and looking a state! At least the food is delivered!

@userh79 not Tesco but M&S had loads yesterday.

FangedFrisbee · 24/12/2022 10:18

I ordered lemon grass and got lemon grass shampoo.. dead helpful

fernz · 24/12/2022 10:51

M&S Cranberry & brie tartlets instead of M&S Cheddar cheese profiteroles from Ocado. I went to get them from the local M&S instead as have a weird nostalgic reason for wanting them (they remind me of something my dad used to buy when I was a child).

Also no Jacobs crackers but the Carrs substitute they sent actually sounds better.

That is probably the funniest one so far. Who wouldn’t want shampoo in their Thai curry?

FangedFrisbee · 24/12/2022 13:59

@Changechangychange 😂 well exactly!

Wetblanket78 · 24/12/2022 20:48

Quality street instead of celebrations. I got some a few weeks ago and they tasted awful and hard.🤮🤢Tried to get some celebrations today all chocolates cleared in both home bargains and Asda apart from celebrations. I'm that dissapointed I've ordered some on Uber eats from a local co-op.😂😂😂

Wetblanket78 · 24/12/2022 20:49

😂😂😂

MrsEmmaKnightly · 24/12/2022 21:42

Very happy with my Tesco order - 2 subs. 2x large Camembert replaced with 3 x smaller Camembert and 3 ciabatta replaced with 3 x 4-pack ciabatta rolls.

Intrigued it appears as if some people know what their Tesco subs are in advance though. I know Ocado email in advance of delivery but have been using Tesco for years and only know what issues there are when they rock up. What am I missing??
