So what supermarket substitutions have you had in your xmas shop? I was expecting a couple, but most were like for like...

This is the most annoying one:

Sainsbury's Milk Chocolate Yule Log, Taste the Difference 442g,
substituted with

  • Sainsbury's Raspberry Sponge Roll, Taste the Difference 268g

No yule log so ive been given mini rolls

Honestly I would have preferred mini rolls to a Swiss roll!

What is it with the crackers? Haven't been able to find them for weeks!

No crackers (for the shedload of cheese I bought from the cheesemonger) and no margarita pizzas (weird)

edme · 23/12/2022 14:41

No substitution, but picker accidentally put 5 lemons in my order, instead of 5 oranges I ordered. Receipt still says 5 oranges were delivered.
Now we are here with 8 lemons instead of the 3 lemons and 5 oranges I ordered. Not very good for snacking!

Cookiedough41 · 23/12/2022 14:41

Sainsbury's here - low fat versions of yoghurt and ice cream BUT the biggest one was instead of Potato Dauphinoise we got Parsnip Gratin and rather than a lovely baking Camambert with caramelised onions a bog standard one instead. Not impressed bet if I go into the store they will be there.

Thecomfortador · 23/12/2022 14:51

Just a large bottle of Dr Pepper zero instead of the full sugar version which is mildly disappointing.

Also I ordered a tub of celebrations, but it came with a tub of quality street. No mention of any substitution or unavailability of celebrations.

They also sent two bags of chips, one crinkle cut which I didn't order. But I didn't notice while I was unloading it all so they've gone in the freezer.

soundsystem · 23/12/2022 14:52

I didn't have any in mine! Was absolutely astonished tbh

Got all the things I ordered (although didn't order any meat or dairy)

Astonished!

Crikeyalmighty · 23/12/2022 14:53

Can I comment on the quality of cauliflowers! Both in M&S and Waitrose today they looked a bit manky/ borderline on the turn. (Spanish) I've sent H off to the farm shop to see if any better.

VariousVeins · 23/12/2022 14:58

Asda substituted sprouts for a white cabbage!! Also no crackers for cheese so I had to go to the local supermarket but they had plenty of everything so no problem

Smoked salmon pate substituted with butternut squash pate Sad

Is that because they are about the same colour?

Pearfacebanana · 23/12/2022 15:59

Got subbed some Villa Maria CHARDONNAY in place of a Marlborough Sauvignon. I've only just realised. 😬

jamoncrumpets · 23/12/2022 16:07

They subbed my autistic son's precious Twiglets with Red Leicester Mini Cheddars. The reaction I'd have got serving him them at snack time would've been quite extreme!

Also I cannot find Twiglets anywhere, what's going on?! They're one of his safe foods!

EatYourVegetables · 23/12/2022 16:12

Oh, no bad subs, but the entire Christmas dinner was missing! No bird, ham, pigs in blankets, stuffing, potatoes, carrots or yule log! We did get 3 parsnips so we’ll share that with some gravy.

SugarCookieMonster · 23/12/2022 16:17

AllTheAll · 23/12/2022 13:29

No tubes of sugar cookie dough left. But the bakery had unfrosted cutout sugar cookies and pots of buttercreme frosting for purchase. So I just went even one step lazier. It's okay; I've dialed things up to hard in other aspects of xmas so this is a good reprieve.

Can I ask where you ordered sugar cookie dough from? As my username suggests, I’m a fan 😂

PopTartsAreLife · 23/12/2022 16:24

No pate, no chutney, no cranberry, mint or apple sauce, no balsam tissues, no chocolate cake, no bbq Pringles (my one thing I've been craving for 😭) no calpol, no after Eights, no carrots. No substitutions available for any of this either.

Thin cut ham has been subbed with thick cut, and a shower gel for a different scent so that is fine.

But at least the Baileys is still coming!

Gazelda · 23/12/2022 11:01

Tesco finest 2.6kg Wiltshire gammon joint as sub for 0.9kg bog standard one.

Winner!

Do they refund? That's awful. They could have at least done 3 so it was the same sort of weight

Unfortunately they come from Jacobs and the factory staff were on strike for about 3 weeks from mid november into december. They've still not caught up- same issue with cream crackers.

CoffeeBoy · 23/12/2022 16:29

Sainsburys had no gluten free pastry so gave me chocolate mousse instead. Annoyed because I meant to decline the substitution and forgot! And it’s bloody expensive mousse as well.

We could've swapped, mine was the other way around. No good for my trifle though so had to return it 😂

I saw 6 packs of twiglets in tescos yesterday, but no tubs!

OP posts:
Edinvillian · 23/12/2022 16:33

Pain au chocolate instead of croissants. Don't fancy that with my scrambled eggs and smoked salmon.

StrawberryWater · 23/12/2022 16:36

Fresh cauliflower got substituted for frozen. Nothing terrible.

Nothing will beat the time a few years ago when Asda substituted a chicken with cherry coke. Still haven’t worked that one out. Not sure what they were thinking. 🤣

2023willbemyyear · 23/12/2022 16:38

La roule cheese subbed for asda's own soft cheese with pineapple- bleurgh!!

No crackers or water biscuits and no subs either.
Got a cold and no car so just won't have crackers and cheese over Christmas.

And the weirdest one, albeit not Christmas related- 56 Little Angels size 6 nappies subbed for Little Angels 56 Size 6 Nappies. Exact same item, just different word order.

Shufflebumnessie · 23/12/2022 17:16

I ordered a 24 pack of 330ml cans of Coca cola. I was subbed with 24 pack of 150ml cans. Half the amount but charged the same price. I politely declined.

We had lots of substitutions (sabra lovely hummus for tesco gross reduced fat hummus stacker 🤮)

My favourite one was:

3 x finest ready made Turkey gravy

For

4 x tubs bisto chicken gravy granules.

I'm trying to imagine the absolute river of gravy you could make with 4 tubs of granules.

I got similar on the gravy - they sent 2 tubs of turkey gravy granules for 2 packets of ready-made turkey gravy, which I thought was nuts! I asked the delivery man if I could return half the substitution and it was ok, luckily. I even had a bit of a dither about that, but I’d gone into the shop in the meantime (the order comes from a different branch, so this can sometimes be worthwhile!) and they didn’t even have granules left on the shelf, so I thought myself lucky to get them!

My only other issue with Tesco was that the red cabbage was about the size of a Brussels sprout when it arrived, but if there’s a shortage, I was probably lucky to get that too!
