Every Christmas I fall into the panettone trap

Does anyone ever actually eat it?

Every year I fall for the pretty box and every year it gets left.

It's very nice with double cream...try that!

PanettoneDisappointment · 24/12/2021 02:52

Poured on top, or whipped?

Even that makes me think it's horrible or you wouldn't have to pour double cream on top!

Use it to make bread and butter pudding.

PanettoneDisappointment · 24/12/2021 02:58

Good idea.

Toasted with butter, delicious

HanSB · 24/12/2021 03:03

Toasted with choc spread for breakfast!

Valhalla17 · 24/12/2021 03:10

Poured on top.

Maybe it's just the cream I like then Blush

FictionalCharacter · 24/12/2021 03:11

Oh I love it! We don’t have it in our house because I’m the only one who likes it. Sad

Grumpysister · 24/12/2021 03:12

My DH shared this trait - every bloody year! The bread and butter pudding idea has been done here and was popular but I’ve never tried it toasted Shock

Singalongsingsong · 24/12/2021 03:14

We’re having it for breakfast, toasted with butter and marmalade. It’s definitely bread not cake in my opinion!

givethatbabyaname · 24/12/2021 03:17

Yes to toasted, yes to b&b pudding. Or warmed in the oven and eaten with vanilla ice cream.

Alternatively, gift it.

Poppins17 · 24/12/2021 03:18

Jamie Oliver has a fab recipe which includes chocolate (we usually use Terrys chocolate orange) and marmalade in for bread and butter pudding - it’s delicious!

I'm not sure I can gift something with the slice taken out!

I wish you could just buy the empty box to be honest.Grin

You voluntarily buy it?! I get one every year from a family friend. Haven’t had the heart to tell her we’re not keen. Kids and DH won’t even entertain the idea of eating it, so every year, I’m stuck eating the bloody stuff (toasted) for breakfast because I don’t want it go to waste and I don’t know anyone who actually likes it.

LadyCampanulaTottington · 24/12/2021 03:55

Dip it in your cappuccino for breakfast the way Italians do. It’s delicious.

I got a personal mini panettone this year because DH is a traditionalist and likes the one with candied peel. I think raisins are the food of the devil so got a mini chocolate chip one instead.

@PanettoneDisappointment Quite frankly I’m offended by your whole thread and your name 🤣🤣 as I’m sure you’ll see by my name - it’s the most wonderful time of the year 🎄😍 bloody love a Panettone 😍 currently have 3 in the cupboard 😬🤣

@FictionalCharacter Even better if nobody else eats it - a whole one to yourself 👍🏻😊

MyOtherProfile · 24/12/2021 04:04

We love it! In fact we realised last night nobody has given us one and we haven't bought our own and we are all disappointed!

Definitely see it as bread / brioche rather than cake. We all like it toasted for Christmas breakfast.

You're clearly insane. No-one EVER says 'I don't know what to do with this chocolate gateaux/baguette, shall I singe it in the toaster or make into a bread pudding, or pour double cream on it.'

Currently have 3 in the cupboard - exactly, no-one wants to eat them.

There's a reason bread comes in a plain packet- it doesn't have to promote itself. Angry

I’m thinking I might make a version of tiramisu with mine!

Rememberallball · 24/12/2021 04:26

I get at least one every year - and really miss the Italian Deli where we used to live (200 miles away so not somewhere we can visit just to buy panettone) that used to do an amazing range including filled ones (the one with prosecco crème in it was sublime!) Now DH buys me one from Lidl/Aldi depending on where he sees them and I have a slice with a hot chocolate or, as others have suggested, toasted with really good salted butter. I also get the mini ones in coffee shops when we’re out if I get the chance!!

icklekid · 24/12/2021 04:29

You obviously haven’t tried carluccio panettone- it is the most amazing most festive part of our Christmas! Huge and delicious but never wasted here. Now that carluccio restaurant has shut we have ordered one online each year for us and one for my parents. I refuse to eat any other because these are just to die for 😋

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 24/12/2021 04:30

75% of the only one we ever had (a present) ended up going out in the garden for the birds, who were very happy.

Newestname002 · 24/12/2021 04:36

Bloody love a traditional panettone - to the point I can't have it in the house any more, as I have absolutely no control and would eat it for breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper and snacks in between. I've been known to devour two whole ones on my own over Christmas (there's never any left for New Years).

Last Christmas I bought a couple of the small individual ones but strangely enough I didn't really like the taste of those, though I still ate them.... This year I'm on the rum and butter fruit cake (fab alone or with a hunk of good cheese) but I can see I've just developed a similar addiction Blush

KatherineJaneway · 24/12/2021 05:44

Never bought it myself. Looked so dry and unappetising when I've seen it in other people's houses.

PanettoneSeason · 24/12/2021 05:57

@PanettoneDisappointment 🤣🤣 I actually wish that were the case - but the 3 in the cupboard are to replace the ones already eaten and to stock up before they leave the shops and see me through the miserable month of January 🤣
