Every Christmas I fall into the panettone trap

Does anyone ever actually eat it?

Every year I fall for the pretty box and every year it gets left.

Wow what a thread. Such negative comments. It's festive bread. Delicious and light with some dried fruit and perfect for Christmas breakfast, though traditionally it's served for dessert. It will dry out once cut. If you expect moist fruit cake you will be disappointed. I just wish my family liked orange peel, I can't really buy it as I would be the only one eating it.

Bluntness100 · 24/12/2021 08:22

The Marks and Sparks triple chocolate one is delicious…

HeronLanyon · 24/12/2021 08:25

I absolutely love it and have eaten it since my my started making it in the 60s. So for me it’s standard Christmas and Easter fare. I also don’t have a sweet tooth so it’s a rare sweet thing for me.
Plain classics only here.
Toasted with salted butter or just untoasted. Often dipped in drink. Messy but good !

Cismyfatarse · 24/12/2021 08:28

One of my pupils gave me one from Valvona and Crolla. Chocolate chip. It is amazing.

Lubeyboobyalt · 24/12/2021 08:29

I love pannetone but got substitute of a gluten free one this year, and the texture was actually fine but all it tasted of was lemon peel and sadness, like they didn't make any effort with the actual taste of it.

I AM the only one eating it Grin and that suits me fine because I LOVE it. Was ill before Christmas, couldn't face food for a week but kept getting that hunger/nausea and nibbles of panettone were the only thing I could face. Go on, ChangedToday! get one for yourself! it's not too late...

"Think of it as a lighter version of our Christmas cake. You have the spices, the candied peel and the dried fruit" - yes, that's it exactly! you get all the lovely flavours of Christmas but in a light fluffy slice instead of something dense.

Lordamighty · 24/12/2021 08:32

I love panettone & have already eaten the first one I bought for Christmas but I have to say that not all panettone are equal. Some don’t have enough fruit in & are too dry. Ours is from Morrisons The Best range & it is delicious & only cost £7. I usually get the Carluccio one but the restaurant near me closed down.

onemouseplace · 24/12/2021 08:33

@icklekid

You obviously haven’t tried carluccio panettone- it is the most amazing most festive part of our Christmas! Huge and delicious but never wasted here. Now that carluccio restaurant has shut we have ordered one online each year for us and one for my parents. I refuse to eat any other because these are just to die for 😋
I agree with this. We get the Carluccio panettone every year and it is so good! It’s a total bugger to slice, but the taste is amazing and god only knows how it stays moist for so long.
merryxmasmelodies · 24/12/2021 08:36

I love it but always regret buying it because then I eat it... and it's not exactly low-calorie.

ExtremeIroning · 24/12/2021 08:39

It's bread

Do bread things with it

frami · 24/12/2021 08:41

Love it, spread with mascapone and consumed with a glass of Masala wine.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 24/12/2021 08:43

I eat it like a breakfast bread, I love tearing bits off rather than slicing, as it’s all about the texture

It’s not cake, it’s bread

A yummy bread with the texture of cotton candy

BlackeyedBrusselsSprout · 24/12/2021 08:43

Oh gosh we love it in our house. We have it lightly toasted and spread with lashings of mascarpone. It’s a game changer honestly. Nothing says Christmas at ours like the smell of warm panettone.

We were gifted some by our Italian neighbours who made sure to explain it’s the authentic stuff and not the stuff you see everywhere. For the first time ever, we actually enjoyed it and thought it tasted really good!

Changedtoday · 24/12/2021 08:45

Thank you @ApplesinmyPocket you have nearly convinced me since I have a couple of last second essentials to pick up. Wonder if there are any left though, our city is completely out of Stollen already Xmas Grin

farfallarocks · 24/12/2021 08:48

Are you kidding? One lasts 20 secs in our house we eat it sliced as it is. Yum

Love it and just about to have a big fat piece with butter on Xmas Grin

starofwonder · 24/12/2021 08:58

You need the pistachio crème (or 'green cream' as it's known in this house) to spread on it. Vastly expensive at the Italian deli but a perfect match with a proper squidgy panettone. We eat it for breakfast throughout December hoping there will be some left for Christmas Day!

Every Christmas I fall into the panettone trap
StruggleStreet · 24/12/2021 09:02

Could be worse OP. I’ve somehow gained a reputation in my family as someone who likes Stollen (I don’t) and every Christmas mum buys a Stollen just for me because I love it so much.

StruggleStreet · 24/12/2021 09:03

There's a reason bread comes in a plain packet- it doesn't have to promote itself

This is so true 😂 it’s definitely trying too hard with all that fancy packaging

TalkedTooMuchStayedTooLong · 24/12/2021 09:03

@thistimelastweek

Panettone is right up there with sugared almonds.

So-called Christmas treats that are actually nasty.

I'm not a fan of panettone, but I love sugared almonds!
SittingontheSidelines · 24/12/2021 09:08

Ours is bought solely for the purpose of turning it into bread and butter pudding.

DSGR · 24/12/2021 09:11

Definitely needs proper butter on it
