Every Christmas I fall into the panettone trap

Does anyone ever actually eat it?

Every year I fall for the pretty box and every year it gets left.

Big thread already with some ideas here too.

Is Panettone the biggest waste of money http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/4425204-Is-Panettone-the-biggest-waste-of-money

RedRosie · 24/12/2021 09:13

We love it too ... Preferably a v good one with whipped cream, or toasted, or in a bread and butter pudding.

I also love Pandoro. Italian puddings are fab.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 24/12/2021 09:21

I’ve never tried it before but was given one as part of a hamper by a lovely Italian family at my school this year. This thread inspired me to try it so I’ve just had 2 slices toasted with butter and it was delicious! So thank you for starting this thread 😄.

Missey85 · 24/12/2021 09:27

I buy one every year I love them toasted with butter or they make really yummy bread and butter pudding

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 24/12/2021 09:43

You could have it as a pannetone Christmas bombe. You stuff it with ice cream and pour cold baileys over it. Absolutely glorious

Newrunner29 · 24/12/2021 09:49

I toast it and spread butter on it and have it for Christmas day breakfast 😋 love it

IWasHotInTheNineties · 24/12/2021 10:08

Morrison’s do a chocolate chip one with no fruit. It’s about £3 and it’s not fancy but it is delicious.

MarshaBradyo · 24/12/2021 10:10

We got one with chocolate not fruit

Very light and fluffy

From a local deli - very nice

ZenNudist · 24/12/2021 10:11

I'm going to make one to have for Christmas breakfast. It's too late this year. I've bought aldi croissants. Plus my baking schedule is set

antisocialsocialclub · 24/12/2021 10:32

God yes! Toast it add real butter, yum! It’s not dry at all, it’s really moist and delicious!

C8H10N4O2 · 24/12/2021 10:42

Heretic! Dunk into black coffee for breakfast, make a rich bread and butter pudding, Nigel Slater's cake... So many possibilities.

dudsville · 24/12/2021 10:45

I love panettone so much! We've already had one. We have two more patiently waiting as we have a lot of treats and they'll keep a bit! I like a chunk room temp with a rea/coffee.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/12/2021 10:52

I love them but didn't buy one this year as it's a struggle to eat a whole one

borntobequiet · 24/12/2021 10:57

I don’t get the adding butter thing. But then neither do I put butter on croissants as they contain butter already

It’s just like putting butter in a toasted teacake

Nigellas cake looks good but havent tried it.

ditalini · 24/12/2021 11:09

Dh asked me if he should get one for his helper along with the bottle he'd bought.

Good god no says I. Thats what you buy when you can't be arsed. No-one actually likes it.

Guess what he brought home as his gift from said helper 😆

Actually we had some toasted last night and it was quite nice.

EewwwDavid · 24/12/2021 11:16

Make french toast with it.

VanillaAndOrange · 24/12/2021 11:20

I really like panettone but I don't think DH does. His parents gave us a big one one year and I ended up eating most of it, so I don't buy it now. I like eating it in cafés now and again. I have heard it makes good bread and butter pudding, but if I had a lot to use up I'd probably just eat it toasted and/or buttered most of the time.

borntobequiet · 24/12/2021 11:20

Teacakes are dry though, and not nice unless toasted.

SummerOfComedy · 24/12/2021 11:21

I love panettone. I sent DH out yesterday to get me one from Lidl or Aldi, because they usually have loads. But there wasn't any at all. He found them in Asda and even then, only a few.
I have a fruit and a chocolate one. Both delicious.
No one's getting any. There all mine.

😋😁

StiltonIsLife · 24/12/2021 11:25

Panettone is great, so versatile, but definitely think it as a brioche. I would take panettone over most Christmas desserts (Christmas cake, christmas pudding).

Ginius · 24/12/2021 11:41

Jamie Oliver does bonkers panettone pudding which is heavenly, very rich but I can't stop once I start.

I am sorry. You are utterly and completely wrong. Panettone is absolutely delicious. I only buy one though because I can eat the whole 700g ones in a day easily Blush

They need to be really fresh and soft though. So many of the cheap ones sold in this country are very dry.

Honestly try it, it’s so good!
