Every Christmas I fall into the panettone trap

Does anyone ever actually eat it?

Every year I fall for the pretty box and every year it gets left.

To answer your question: yes, I actually eat it and so does my husband. It’s delicious.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 24/12/2021 07:13

I bought a mini one this year, although I will miss the lovely big tin.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 24/12/2021 07:14

I wish my family hated it. Both kids and my husband are obsessed with it. Hopefully the baby won’t be a fan.
I don’t like sharing it!

EdenFlower · 24/12/2021 07:16

It's such an easy breakfast for Christmas day- sliced and toasted with a little bit of butter (especially with raisins in) I've got an apricot one and one with lemon cream in it this year! mmmmm

MrsMurdstone · 24/12/2021 07:18

Two of us got throug a whole pannettone (1.5kg) the first night it was opened.

actiongirl1978 · 24/12/2021 07:20

DH has the pandoro without the fruit. Every year I am tempted into a piece and every year I have one bite and chuck it. Dry, sweet, full of air. Boak.

If Im going to eat bread I'll have a slice of sourdough. If I eat cake I want proper dense cake.

This is neither.

The boxes are pretty though.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 24/12/2021 07:22

Make French toast/Eggy bread with it?
That's what we like to do with ours

toomuchturmericinwatermelon · 24/12/2021 07:24

Panettone is bloody delicious, but their quality can vary massively. Christmas cake, Christmas pudding & mince pies though... nasty all the way.

Hotcuppatea · 24/12/2021 07:27

It's my Christmas eve breakfast. Toasted and buttered. Yum!

Were having chocolate fondue instead of Christmas pudding this year and are going to dip squares of it in that too.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 24/12/2021 07:28

My Christmas breakfast too, I love it

Lolamento · 24/12/2021 07:32

One of our family traditions. Love it 😍

HelloBunny · 24/12/2021 07:33

I just think people have a crazy amount of food in at Christmas... Maybe the panettone doesn’t get eaten (PP said they had three!) because there’s the Christmas cake, plum pudding, stollen, mince pies, Yule log, profiteroles, Sherry triffle, etc... Then all the tubs of Quality Street, cheese, crisps, booze and the rest. I honestly don’t know how folk get through it all.
We do get nice things at Christmas, but just the food that we really love. I wouldn’t buy a panettone, but it is nice toasted with butter. And a nice cup of tea!

GlumyGloomer · 24/12/2021 07:38

Another vote for panettone being delicious. No need to muck it about, just cut a slice and eat it.

Dishwashersaurous · 24/12/2021 07:49

We were given a clearly really expensive one.

So excited.

Utterly revolting.

So disappointed

Limer · 24/12/2021 07:52

Toasted with plenty of butter. Delicious Christmas breakfast!

MargosKaftan · 24/12/2021 07:53

Right about to crack into mine. I have 2 and the big posh one does look like I should gift it to someone... nope, im going in. It will be breakfast today, tomorrow, all through to NYD when I will weigh myself and sob a bit. Its not cake, its bread.

FlipFlops4Me · 24/12/2021 07:56

We butter the slices. Nice like that. Not at all edible without the butter. Might try it with cream or custard this year though.

Knittyknittybangbang · 24/12/2021 07:57

Cut it into slices and freeze it. You can toast the slices straight from the freezer and eat with butter. I bought a Pannetone just so I could do this.

Christmas1988 · 24/12/2021 07:57

I love panettone, we are going to have it for breakfast tomorrow, it’s delicious!

Retrievemysanity · 24/12/2021 07:58

There’s another Nigel Slater recipe where he makes pannetone and mincemeat sandwich by frying pannetone slices with mincemeat in the middle and dusting the top with icing sugar. We have this with cream and it’s really nice!

Dishwashersaurous · 24/12/2021 08:00

Do they all taste of orange.

This one just tasted of orange and nothing else

applecharlotte12 · 24/12/2021 08:00

We ate a chocolate panettone yesterday and it was delicious! Not a fan at all of the fruit ones tho.

oohyoudevilyou · 24/12/2021 08:04

Panettone is very disappointing sat in its jazzy look-at-me box, declaring that its worthy of being gifted to someone. If someone buys me cake, I expect it to be something I just have to put on a plate and enjoy with a cuppa, not faff about incorporating into recipes to make it palatable. Would prefer to be bought a pack of Mr Kiplings Viennese Whirls which are modest little things that never fail to spark joy and can be enjoyed straight from the carton (usually before I've even pulled out of Tesco's car park).

TimeIhadaSeasonalNameChange · 24/12/2021 08:04

Send it to me! I couldn't get one, despite going on a 200 mile trip to buy one (ok, that wasn't the sole objective but the main one on the list).

As a child we used to get one (imported from a good Italian deli in Rome) for Christmas each year. Each time my mother would give it away, and I never knew emwhat deliciousness I was missing out on. My heart bleeds for all those lost panntonni!

Geamhradh · 24/12/2021 08:16

I'm in Italy so obviously am surrounded by them.
I do like them, we're on our 4th but only the mass produced ones (so much nicer than the "artesan" ones. Every year MIL's grandson brings a posho one and they're not nearly as nice.
