I haven’t seen a thread yet and it’s becoming somewhat of a tradition to be nosey and look in MNetters Xmas fridges.

Here’s mine, booze is in the garage!

Here's mine. Far too much food but it will all be gone in a couple of days.

This thread made me realise lots of people keep eggs in the fridge, i thought outside was better?

Pangolin44 · 24/12/2021 14:12

No eggs, potatoes, onions, bread, citrus fruits, root vegetables, tomatoes, any other fruit but soft fruit in the fridge!

MrsLannister · 24/12/2021 14:27

This is mine, wine in the garage fridge. Fudge and truffles being made by DD as we speak. Cannot cannot wait!!!

Bravo @beautyslumber!

My fridges are a mess. I’m in Oz so a booze fridge is fairly ordinary.

Well, you can obviously put whatever you want in the fridge, my fridge is huge for one person and I have nowhere better to store potatoes, root veg, tomatoes, soft fruit etc.

But no, eggs should not be in the fridge.

I keep them in the vintage brown china chicken crock DP bought me last Christmas (which I was very happy about) because the windowsill is very cold. I think there are a few reasons why people refrigerate eggs now;
  1. Kitchens and houses in general are warmer, so they don't keep as well.
  1. Less cooking from scratch means no need to have room temperature eggs.
  1. More 'things' in kitchens reduces space, along with a more minimalistic trend, so it's perceived as being more cluttered with eggs out.
  1. Many countries wash eggs before sale, which reduces their shelf life - that's why fridges have egg storage - and if you have a place that is clearly for eggs in your fridge, it's easy to assume that it's where you should be keeping them.
  1. Memories of salmonella in eggs and perceptions about anything left out being unhygienic, hence why people ruin keep potatoes, bread, onions, garlic and everything else in there rather than outside.
  1. People eat fewer eggs, partly thanks to now thought to be incorrect beliefs about them being bad for you, so they need to last longer before being used up.
  1. Fridges are larger on average now - mostly giant fridge freezers, rather than an undercounter one. Might as well use the space to store food, especially as it's taken up where a bread bin, tea caddy, egg crock, potato basket and other ambient storage would have fitted.

We (well, I) eat a lot of eggs. They're never in the crock long enough for there to be a noticeable difference in freshness between there and in the fridge.

Not posting a photo of our fridge as DP did it this year. DP's cooking, so the floor is covered with a liberal dusting of flour and the moment the door is opened, there will be the big fluffy head of our elderly senile cat in there, as she's developed an obsession with butter and knows that she can't get into the butter dish that's also on the windowsill.

Next year, it's being moved onto a custom built shelf above the freezer.

MrsPworkingmummy · 24/12/2021 14:35

This will be a lot emptier after tea tomorrow. We are hosting for 16. BiL is bringing a lot of food too

@NeverDropYourMooncup I use to keep them in the fridge & as you say my fridge does have the place for them. But we eat a lot of eggs & I often bake on a whim & I read eggs are better at room temp for that.

Brusca · 24/12/2021 15:34

Mine. It's quite tame tbh, largely due to being gluten free this year and buying less party food!

I'm mostly a bit horrified at how many of you have your raw meat on top shelves.

There's no point in showing mine. You might as well be looking at the booze aisle in the supermarket.
I think there's some cheese lurking in it somewhere though.

Opalfeet · 24/12/2021 19:46

Eggs absorb the flavours in the fridge, it's why you shouldn't store them in there.

Opalfeet · 24/12/2021 19:47

Oh and apparently bacteria grows on the shells in the fridge

Separate fridge for booze - though not loads, it's mostly full of juice and soft drinks

Reading this with a LOT of envy of shelf quantity and arrangement, and secretly hoping my fridge breaks soon so I can invest in one with more condiment and can space.

RJnomore1 · 24/12/2021 21:11

Re the raw meat thing

I had to put my pigs in blanket on a higher shelf but they are completely sealed in plastic

The issue I think is if it’s not sealed ?

mum2jakie · 24/12/2021 21:15

Yeah our beef joint is on the top shelf but it's vacuum packed so don't see there's any risk of cross contamination
