I haven’t seen a thread yet and it’s becoming somewhat of a tradition to be nosey and look in MNetters Xmas fridges.

Here’s mine, booze is in the garage!

I’m so glad normal and sense prevails.

Apologies about my half pain frenzied rant previously, for me it’s just absurd that there is always someone wanting to piss over someone’s food!!!

My vegetables go in the utility room (coldest room in the house) and saves room for wine food Xmas Grin

liveforsummer · 23/12/2021 13:20

Oh and whatever is in the net is it oranges? Onions? Either way no fridge needed

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 23/12/2021 13:21

*Normality

I keep most veg in my fridge, exceptions being squashes/pumpkins and potatoes.

I have a cool, dry room upstairs part of which is used as a food store/larder/pantry. I keep a big sack of potatoes up there. Squashes/pumpkins are quite happy in the kitchen.

Fruit is kept in a fruit bowl on the kitchen counter with the exception of lemons/limes which are kept in the fridge (separately from veg because the two don’t mix well for preservation) - we don’t use those quickly enough so if I don’t refrigerate them I tend to lose one or two to mould. However at Christmas when the turkey and other special foods (cheese!!) take up so much room the veg gets moved to the shed.

I spend my entire working live focused on trying to eradicate poverty at everything from a strategic level to physically organising bags of food to people who need it. I spend some of my free time on the boards of charities dedicated to eradicating homelessness and inequality. I make financial donations as I see fit.

I can guarantee you that none of your full fridges are the reason someone else is struggling. The structural barriers and inequalities need dealt with. It’s terrible people in a rich country like ours are struggling. I’ll do everything I can to change that.

Will it stop me posting my fridge photo for you tomorrow? No because it is not a race to the bottom. I’ve been the child with the empty cupboard. I’m glad I’m not the adult with one but the shame doesn’t lie with us for buying food. It lies with politicians and policy makers who allow a situation to continue that means that some can’t.

I’ll get off my soap box now and go back to enjoying noseying at you all 😁

MrsMcCluskeysChristmasTree · 23/12/2021 13:40

@Moaningturtle

I need a fridge education. What fruit and veg is acceptable to refrigerate and what can I leave in the cupboard/chilly utility?

It’s definitely NOT because I have just bought more cheese and pate and need the space…..absolutely not.

Veg and salad items wise it all goes in the fridge here apart from onions and potatoes BUT if I needed room I could move it to a cool bag in the downstairs bathroom which resembles Antarctica.

Fruit wise we only tend to ever have apples and oranges (in fruit bowl) and then blueberries and strawberries (in the fridge).

MrsMcCluskeysChristmasTree · 23/12/2021 13:40

The way people store things differently to me is what makes these threads so interesting though!

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 23/12/2021 13:46

Oh must add, onions/shallots are kept in a basket on top of my microwave. Garlic is kept in a garlic keeper. Leeks/spring onions are kept in the fridge.

Generally you can work out what to store in a fridge by how it was stored in the supermarket.
However, carrots, salad, peppers, cucumbers, soft fruits (straw/raspberries) all benefit from being in a fridge.

VanGoghsDog · 23/12/2021 14:13

It's all in, but a bit of a mess. Just me on my own for the next eleven days!

@HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule

Worthy, self-righteous, virtue signalling nonsense. Just stop it.
Yes indeed.

I was annoyed to read about last year’s bonkers thread as I missed it, then alphabetsoup1980 came along …

I've concluded I have too many jars in my fridge, top shelf needs an overhaul!

Also need to know who Zac is... because if he is a dog I might need to copy for DDog here! Grin

No pic because I cannot be bothered to get up from under my heated blanket, but we have no fewer than three fridges full to the brim... for only six of us! In my defence, one is a tiny camping fridge full of vegetables and party food and the other is a normal sized one mostly full of drinks.

We've been on the bones of our arses some years when DC were tiny, and as I paid for my shopping in M&S today I almost cried with gratitude (honestly, I know that sounds like MN hyperbole but I'm sensitive today lol) because 10 years ago I could never have dreamed of living the life I live now, with the financial security I am so privileged to enjoy.

I donate every year to those who are currently where I was then, and - even more importantly - vote in their interests.

You should see the freezer, drinks cabinet and gin station!

Sadly, I don't drink on my own and I'll be on my own all of Christmas, so it'll all still be there in the new year.

But I do need to make some space in the freezer somehow, you couldn't get a bayleaf in it currently.

lilly7221w · 23/12/2021 15:40

It's Christmas, permission to drink alone lady. I'm alone, well my friend Mr Wine is with me.

beenthereboughtthetshirt · 23/12/2021 15:46

@Teachocsbook I wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas. Flowers. I hope your vouchers turn up soon. xx I gave to the foodbank and the Salvation Army, is there anyone there who could help you even tide you over until your vouchers come through? Did you hear from your brother? x

RubyFakeLips · 23/12/2021 15:48

Here's mine. I do try to keep it organised. FYI, we aren't obsessed with Philadelphia, I'll be making a cheesecake shortly.

Not at full capacity but got my click and collect of meats and a big shop coming tomorrow. Luckily we have a spare fridge, and one in the basement which is just booze.

Love this thread every year, except last year, thanks for reviving. Going to spend the next hour nosying through all the pics.

Indoctro · 23/12/2021 15:54
