The Christmas Chronicles by Nigel Slater: Read Along Thread

Here we go people! Smile

I thought we could start reading the Introduction from October 15th at a gentle pace to allow people to join the thread. Then all set for Chapter 1 on November 1st.

The Christmas Chronicles is currently just over £20 on Amazon. Maybe people could share all the options for those who are just joining us, who still want to get a copy.

I'm hoping this thread will be a lovely, gentle, uplifting transition into the Christmas period where we can share our thoughts, recipe attempts and inspiration from Nigel x

Thanks for the thread. Marking my place.

Will be good to finally read the book as I think I have had it since it came out!

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 01/10/2021 08:24

Ooh can I join. I've bought the book and it's sitting twinkling at me on my bedside table!

AndAllOurYesterdays · 01/10/2021 08:27

Joining too. Mine is also sitting there waiting for the colder nights

thelegohooverer · 01/10/2021 08:29

Lovely

VikingNorthUtsire · 01/10/2021 08:31

Also joining. Someone on the other thread also mentioned the podcasts which are free to download, perhaps we can include those too?

Hoping there will be people cooking too and sharing reviews and photos 😊

sluj · 01/10/2021 08:44

It's in W H Smiths for £9 at the moment. Looking forward to the readalong. Just finished "Toast" so I have done all the background research 😅

Christmas21 · 01/10/2021 08:55

I'm joining too! I can't wait to start.I'm planning to try out as many of the recipes as possible.

FiveShelties · 01/10/2021 09:06

I would love to join, I am in NZ and Christmas in sunshine with BBQs will never feel quite right.

Dillidilly · 01/10/2021 09:10

I peaked inside my copy to check the Introduction and when Chapter 1 starts, and even the very first photo of the book is so beautiful and evocative!

I'm excited to hear about people's recipe outcomes. I'm not really a cook, although I love reading recipes...I'm hoping there might be some pictures posted too!

@sluj that's a great bargain, thanks for sharing x

Thanks for the thread. Just checking in I’ve had the book since it came out and cooked a few things from it but hoping to make more this year. I just love how Nigel writes about food.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/10/2021 09:20

I bought a 2nd hand one several weeks ago, intending to save it until 1st November, but now I can’t remember where I hid it, to stop me succumbing to temptation early…

I was hoping to come across a second hand copy in a charity shop but no luck so far, now I know I can get a copy for £9 in W H smiths I'll buy from there. Thank you sluj!!

Fredthefrog · 01/10/2021 09:38

I bought a copy for myself and a friend thanks to the previous thread. Wish I'd seen the wh Smith price though! Looking forward to the read a long to get me in the festive mood. I love this time of year .

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/10/2021 09:43

@Dillidilly, and you never know, I might also find the mega bag of nuts I bought for dh’s stocking last October and hid somewhere ‘safe’.

Bearyinlove · 01/10/2021 09:49

My copy arrived too! It was second hand and disappointingly much more battered than expected but I am sure it'll still do the job. So looking forward to starting it, as well as the podcasts. I've got a virus at the moment and it's taking all.my willpower not to read it or start watching Christmas films on Netflix!

AnneShirleysNewDress · 01/10/2021 10:02

Thanks @Dillidilly. I'm resisting the temptation to read it now.

Ha! Funny old world…My copy was second hand and battered, but for some silly reason it makes me love it all the more. It feels like a treasured family hand-me-down, like an ancient Mrs Beaton book!
Haywire · 01/10/2021 10:10

I love this book it has one of my all time favourite Christmas recipes in too that we look forward to every year. Would it be a spoiler to say what it is! It's super easy and just so festive and delicious.

SleighQueen · 01/10/2021 10:19

Mine arrived yesterday. Excited!

MarisPiper92 · 01/10/2021 10:27

Thanks OP! I managed to get my copy back off my neighbour and have bought a Bay & Rosemary candle, so I'm all set. I've read CC the last two Christmases, and I don't think I'll ever get tired of it.

ChildrenGrowingUpTooFast · 01/10/2021 10:33

I'd like to join. I have a copy for a couple of years, started reading it and never quite get through the entire book. I've made a few things from there too. It's a lovely book!

ChildrenGrowingUpTooFast · 01/10/2021 10:35

Added the podcast to my phone too now. How exciting.

Bearyinlove · 01/10/2021 10:36

@TatoAndBeans

Well read I wouldn't mind. It looks like someone has been gnawing on the corner of it! 🤣
