Aibu to no longer give ds1 a stocking now he’s turned 18?

I can’t think of a better time to stop.otherwise I’ll be doing it when he’s 30!

I feel a bit mean though!

Ds2 (15) will still get one.

My 21 one still gets but probably more so because she has younger siblings. I think I'll do it until she no longer lives with us.

mbosnz · 13/12/2020 17:40

Oh. And since coming over here, because the first year we were here was so shit, and I was desperate to do anything that might put a smile on a dial, we also do Christmas Eve Box. Yes, it's over the top. (It's also the only time anyone gets a new pair of PJ's, lol.

Surely any year children are at home overnight on Christmas Eve they get stockings, no matter how old they are.

DH and I do one for each other now but if ever we stayed at my parents, we would get a stocking from them. I think that you don’t need to buy special gifts for a stocking when people are older; just put some of the smaller (and cheaper) items of the normal pile in one so they don’t feel left out over the gesture.

Skipsurvey · 13/12/2020 17:47

aw thank you @eggandonion

regards the no contact, always a risk Wink

lachy · 13/12/2020 18:27

I'm 46.

DH does my stocking now, my DM passed on the list of essential items, and I do one for him.

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without a stocking.

nononovember · 13/12/2020 18:43

Me and my husband always do a stocking for each other. The 21 year old and younger siblings sit on our bed and we open stockings. All part of the magic of Christmas.

ballsdeep · 13/12/2020 18:45

I still get one at 38

christmasathomeagain · 13/12/2020 18:47

I love a stocking left at the end of our bed, its my favourite part. We do one for each other and as long as the dc sleep here on Christmas eve they will still get one.

afaloren · 13/12/2020 18:48

I am 39 and my mum still does me a stocking. I do her one too and she is 71!

shallbe · 13/12/2020 18:57

You can't seriously be considering waking up on Christmas morning and having one for one son and not the other, he hasn't even left home?! This is the kind of thing my MIL would do, DH and her don't get on!

Chickydoo · 13/12/2020 19:01

We all have stockings! Even 25 yr old. I do most of them, DD does one for me & DH.
Family ritual, takes ages sitting on the end of the bed & laughing & the silly things, putting on the items of clothing, drinking Buck's Fizz, phoning family members. My favourite part of the day

riotlady · 13/12/2020 19:01

My mum still did me a stocking every year until last year when my partner took over (I was 27).

My sister and I had a moment of nostalgia when it happened actually as we realised it meant we would no longer get matching items!

fitflopqueen · 13/12/2020 19:10

DD age 27 will be home for xmas with her Ozzie flatmate and they will have a stocking each. Have a younger DS still at home and the dog, she gets one too.

EL1984 · 13/12/2020 19:11

I'm 36 and live in a different country to my parents but when I'm staying with them in my family home for Xmas I'm pretty sure I still get my stocking.
18 is not too young to stop

CouldBeOuting · 13/12/2020 19:39

DD is 22 and this is the first Christmas she won’t be at home. I put her packed stocking in the post with her other presents yesterday!

JustaPatioWithAspirations · 13/12/2020 20:13

Ok fuck it I’ll fill it with booze :)

That's great Smile

orangenasturtium · 13/12/2020 20:37

You can do better than that JustaPatioWithAspirations!

If he's leaving for uni and taking A-levels, there's bound to be small items he'll need eg personalised mug, multitool card for his wallet, pens, highlighters, wash bag, pack of cards. Throw in some socks (the more he has, the longer between washes), some funky sweets or snacks from the world food aisle, and some toiletries, maybe something fun like a lock picking kit.

mbosnz · 13/12/2020 20:39

They seem to eat earbuds for their phone, that's a good one. His favourite pots of noodles? Deo, aftershave, pens. . .

JustaPatioWithAspirations · 13/12/2020 20:46

Personalised mug? Yikes!

He’s got a Tony’s Chocoloney. Some guitar strings can go in. Please let Apple make novelty chargers.....

He wants a Cambridge offer and a girlfriend..... I can’t give him either.

Good idea - he got that for birthday from bro though

Yabu.
Even adult dc's should get a stocking.

Pikachubaby · 13/12/2020 20:52

Mine are 18 and 15 too and was not going to bother this year (no Cambridge offer but he does have a girlfriend Grin so quite grown up)

Am now reconsidering! But what to get... GrinShock

orangeicecream · 13/12/2020 21:08

Stockings weren't a thing in my family when I was growing up. My children have got stockings but I'm not doing them this year....I don't think that they will be bothered particularly. They get a small Christmas sack that contains the same type of little gifts but also a few medium sized ones too. They also get one main present from me (single parent). They get lots from their dads side too. Young teens for reference.

LJC1234 · 13/12/2020 21:08

Stockings have no age limit! I do them for my parents 😂 it's the best bit of Christmas
