Aibu to no longer give ds1 a stocking now he’s turned 18?

I can’t think of a better time to stop.otherwise I’ll be doing it when he’s 30!

I feel a bit mean though!

Ds2 (15) will still get one.

Stockings are the best bit of Christmas! I do one for everyone in our house.

EasyPeasyHappyCheesy · 12/12/2020 14:51

I live in a different country but my mum still does a stocking for my husband, dc and me when we are visiting for Christmas. We long stopped doing presents but the stocking is a must in our tradition and I would be very disappointed if I didn't get one. When not visiting I now do stockings myself for the entire family.

LouLou789 · 12/12/2020 14:59

Youngest DS lived with us until he was 21. I stopped the stocking when he was 18. He was horrified.

Madvixen · 12/12/2020 15:00

I'm 37 and I still get one. Everyone in the house at Xmas gets one so that will be an age range between 32 years and 92 years this year

picklemewalnuts · 12/12/2020 15:00

We all have stockings. When people stay with us, they do too.

WeeDangerousSpike · 12/12/2020 15:06

I'm 36, have been living in my own home for about 15 yrs, and DM still does me (and DP) a stocking. Anyone at her house on Xmas day gets one. My 94yr old GM gets one.

After the complete clusterfuck that has been 2020, surely we all need a little bit of fun and joy. I can't think of a worse time to stop, frankly.

JammyDodgersandPeas · 12/12/2020 15:10

Father Christmas brings a stocking to everyone in the house - he doesn't leave anyone out. If you're sleeping elsewhere it's up to the people in the house to inform FC Wink

@JustaPatioWithAspirations

Wow you guys are hardcore!

Stockings for adults!

Not sure what moving out means in terms of being a student who comes home for Christmas....as of next year that is what he will be

It means when he moves out properly, into his own home and just visits on Christmas Day.

Thefaceofboe · 12/12/2020 15:11

I’m 26 and live at the other end of the country to my parents but I still get a stocking Grin

NewLockdownNewMe · 12/12/2020 15:13

@Justmuddlingalong

If you're under my roof on Christmas morning, you get a stocking.
Absolutely this! Nothing expensive - edibles, socks, pens, toiletries.

I'd say as long as the children live at home / come back from uni they get stockings

rubydoobydoo · 12/12/2020 15:13

I'm 42 and I still get one when I go to my mum's at Christmas! Grin

Holothane · 12/12/2020 15:13

Once I got to 16 the gifts became crap we never had stockings, please don’t stop just because he’s 18.

starrynight19 · 12/12/2020 15:13

My ds18 would be gutted if I didn’t do him a stocking and he is a student. Although I am not one of those people who think presents should stop at 18 either.
Tbh this year is easier as I can fill it with bits he uses at uni as well.

bellinisurge · 12/12/2020 15:14

Anyone in the house gets some surprise bits from Santa as well as their actual presents from each other. That's how my parents did it. That's how I do it.
I remember rolling in at about 2am after going to a Christmas Eve gig with my big brother - we were both at parents' home for Christmas. I nearly tripped over what Santa had left for me.
It was sweet.

But if he doesn’t have a stocking where will you put his bag of chocolate money?
JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 12/12/2020 15:19

Wow. I've totally missed out. Never had a stocking in my life! Didn't realise everyone else did.

SweetPetrichor · 12/12/2020 15:20

We don’t have children, so it’s just me and DP on Christmas Day and we still have stockings. It’s the best bit. We fill ours with little tasty things to nibble while playing board games on the day.

peboh · 12/12/2020 15:21

I'm 27 live alone with my husband and dh and my mum still gifts me a stocking. Same as with my older sisters. I'll do a stocking for my daughter for as long as she allows/wants one.

peboh · 12/12/2020 15:22

Husband and dd* even

rottiemum88 · 12/12/2020 15:23

This is exactly my point. Why bother? It's all just so naff.

santabetterwashhishands · 12/12/2020 15:24

Sorry but he will call you the grinch forever 🤣 he needs a stocking until he leaves home permanently 🤣

Notdeliasmith · 12/12/2020 15:29

@rottiemum88

In our house it usually contains useful presents or silliness that doesnt fit as a "proper" present.

Usually its things like hair brushes, soaps, car air fresheners, socks, a diary etc, chocolate coins.

It's nice to have some frivolity mixed with the dull stuff you never buy for yourself as an adult!

RayOfSunshine2013 · 12/12/2020 15:31

I’m late 20’s and id be fuming if i didnt get a stocking

rosyribbon · 12/12/2020 15:31

My DH (30) still receives the same childhood stocking from MIL every year,
I (39) get stocking presents in a small gift bag.
My DM also still puts stocking fillers like sweets, socks etc in a gift bag.
