Aibu to no longer give ds1 a stocking now he’s turned 18?

I can’t think of a better time to stop.otherwise I’ll be doing it when he’s 30!

I feel a bit mean though!

Ds2 (15) will still get one.

Holy fuck I’ve uncovered some kind of crazy Christmas-mad cluster!

Stockings for adults took me aback -but for dogs???

Hmmm, I guess I could fill it with miniature bottles of booze and phone chargers.

I do also take the point about where to situate the bag of choc coins in absence of said stocking..

Even dull presents like socks and pants are fun when you find them in a stocking. Add a few sweets, a silly game and it's not expensive.

CherryPavlova · 12/12/2020 18:40

Mine would be very upset without their stockings. Eldest is working in a hospice on Christmas morning so she's coming over beforehand so she'll still have it before work. We've to do one for her fiance too.and hes thirty next year.
Age is irrelevant. Either everyone or nobody.

Superstardjs · 12/12/2020 18:40

My 78 yo dad has one from me every year- it even has his name on it. It's not full of wildly exciting things, but no reason not to preserve the inner child.

weshallneversurrender · 12/12/2020 18:40

Once I turned 18 (I am the youngest, DS 2 years older) and went to university, we started doing family stockings for each other - everyone gets 2 small gifts for everyone else, so doing stockings isn't just the responsibility for 1 person anymore. It worked really well.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 12/12/2020 18:40

Leaving home is the logical time to stop.

LimitIsUp · 12/12/2020 18:41

Aww, get the lad a stocking!

Snapcat · 12/12/2020 18:43

Everyone gets a stocking in our family - best bit of Christmas! Never too old. My Nan had one at 92. Xmas Smile

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 12/12/2020 18:47

I still get an advent calendar, at 45 (also from lovely ex mil), if I didn't I'd DEFINITELY buy one for myself. Most likely Hotel Chocolate Xmas Grin

Pbbananabagel · 12/12/2020 18:56

My dad died when I was 21 and couldnt do one for our mum anymore so my sister and I started doing one for our mum and helping her with each other’s, we were all doing it together for the fun of it on Xmas morning. Now she’s gone too my husband does mine and I do one for him- he loved restarting this tradition in his late 20’s!

stormsurfer · 12/12/2020 18:56

I do one for my mum and dad and they are over 80! No age limit!!

Heartlantern2 · 12/12/2020 18:57

Well myself and my adult partner get one so it would be a bit odd to just leave someone out.

If we only did it for our kids I’d stop when they moved out really I guess.

spongedog · 12/12/2020 19:00

Sorry I think that's a no no. It's the best part of Xmas - finding the socking presents and pretending Santa exists. My teenager is like Mum you know he isnt real, right? The wind up all Dec is lovely!

CatRamsey · 12/12/2020 19:04

I'm 25 still get a stocking and I don't even live with my parents.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 12/12/2020 19:10

Stockings are great because it’s all the anticipation of a present without any of the stress or disappointment that you can have with the big ones.
Lots of little things are brilliant - I think you appreciate a bit of chocolate in a stocking much more than a wrapped box under the tree.

RaininSummer · 12/12/2020 19:10

I did carry on until my eldest was about 30. Only stopped as it would have confused the grandchildren.

AiryFairyMum · 12/12/2020 19:16

We all get one, including our parents if we stay with them.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 12/12/2020 19:16

I'm early 30's and my mum still makes me a stocking (and DH, DB and DSIL). It's one of the best bits of Christmas!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/12/2020 22:39

Regardless of age, everyone staying in our house on Christmas Eve gets a stocking. Might only be a very little one but it’s the law here.

lemonsquashie · 12/12/2020 22:42

I hate tat and waste: 'smellies' urgh

Athinginitself · 12/12/2020 22:47

Defo keep the stocking. I was gutted when my mum stopped ours and I must have been about 30. I quite like the little consumable bits, so much so am making my parents and siblings one of their own this year.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 12/12/2020 22:54

I don't think you can have read the thread, lemonsquashie ...

QuercusRose · 12/12/2020 22:55

@rottiemum88

Absolutely this! Nothing expensive - edibles, socks, pens, toiletries.

This is exactly my point. Why bother? It's all just so naff.

This is what we thought too. Most of it is a pointless waste and DS wasn't bothered at all, so we gave him the choice - we can spend a bit more on the main present, or spend less and buy a bunch of crap for a stocking. He ditched the stocking Grin.
Galliano · 12/12/2020 23:04

I’m stopping this year for DC aged 25, 24 and 18. For obvious reasons I’ve barely been to the shops this year and haven’t picked bits up through the year as I normally would. In previous years the youngest DC has refused to let me stop because if I did she would have had 7 less stockings than her eldest brother and I couldn’t stop for him and carry on for her as she wanted to open her stocking with him. I think you can only stop when the youngest is ready to let you. I don’t think I would have stopped now if it weren’t for the pandemic, impressed that people have still managed to shop for them.

Thecazelets · 12/12/2020 23:12

I'll only stop when they leave home. I can't imagine not doing it, even though all mine are teenagers and one is at university.
