Aibu to no longer give ds1 a stocking now he’s turned 18?

I can’t think of a better time to stop.otherwise I’ll be doing it when he’s 30!

I feel a bit mean though!

Ds2 (15) will still get one.

I wouldn't do it for one child and not the other.
I stopped doing stockings 2 years ago for my DC (now aged 24 and 22). I had put chocolates, deodorant, pants, socks etc in. Both of them took out the chocolate and then abandoned the rest on their bedroom floor. I asked them.why and apparently I'd bought the wrong brand of deodorant, wrong pants etc.

So I said I wasn't going to do them again as it was a waste of time and money. Both ds were ok with that.

Aww get the boy a stocking. I buy a stocking for DH, DD1 and partner, DD2, DS and MIL. Her nearly 90 year old eyes light up when she gets her stocking. Everyone should get that feeling on Christmas morning, young or old.

Gosh, I hope this never happens to me, but I bet it does. I wonder if when they have their own children, they will suddenly click that sometimes the giving is as important.
bitheby · 13/12/2020 00:47

My mum still does it for us: 43, 41 and 39.

I did one year have to tell Father Christmas that I had too many pants and didn't need any for several years!

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 13/12/2020 00:57

My kids get a stocking full chocolate and sweets. Everything else gets wrapped separately. My oldest is 17 and I can’t imagine stopping giving him as many presents as we always have, we definitely don’t be stopping anytime soon. 😬

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 13/12/2020 00:59

Won’t

incognitomum · 13/12/2020 01:00

Dss are 23 and 20. Both get stockings. Ds1 hasn't been at home since leaving for uni. Ds2 has just left to join navy. They love a stocking. I enjoy doing them too.

incognitomum · 13/12/2020 01:01

I mean ds1 hasn't lived at home but stays sometimes. Both here for Christmas.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 13/12/2020 01:02

Our dogs presents wouldn’t fit in a stocking. We all buy them loads. 🤣

GlowingOrb · 13/12/2020 01:03

When dd is as 7 or 8 she asked that the adults start getting stockings too. We have it a try and it’s fun so that is just what we do now.

momonpurpose · 13/12/2020 01:08

My mom stopped filling mine when I was 36 because I handed down my stocking to my baby lol. I never plan on stopping filling my dsughters

BluebellsGreenbells · 13/12/2020 01:12

Mines just turned 18, she has a few makeup treats, customary mug, fave chocolates and a game, some new knickers

They are things she needs, plus a few extras, she hasn’t asked for a main present!

I’m not stopping until they leave home, or more likely, not be here Christmas Day.

caringcarer · 13/12/2020 01:21

Xmas is for everyone. My 3 adult children still get stockings at 36, 34 and 26. DH and I still get stockings. We give adult children main gift under tree or money towards what they want. Then stockings roughly to value of £75 each. Why would you stop when he is 18, he is still your child? It would be mean if his brother gets one. All that will happen is he will stop wanting to spend Xmas with you.

caringcarer · 13/12/2020 01:47

My in-laws make DH, me and adult children.libing at home a stocking too. We make in laws on. They don't have to be expensive. In my mil one I shall put a box of Thornton chocolates as those are her favourites, Xmas socks, gloves, a calender, puzzle books she likes, a Xmas mug, shower gel, a new book, nice pen and fluffy bed socks she likes these, bottle of Martini and a jumper.

Changethetoner · 13/12/2020 01:51

Santa used to fill a stocking for my elder sister when she was away at Uni. Our mum used to post it to her!

FinallyFluid · 13/12/2020 01:57

My DS is an only child he gets so much stuff it fills two stockings.

I heard him on the phone to his friend the other daywho is having his stocking stopped because he is 19Shock and he said oh mate, mine is full of useful stuff and sugar and shite, it is my favourite part of the day. I nearly cried.

timeforanewstart · 13/12/2020 02:03

We never had a stocking and never did for dc , they just had a sack with all presents in that would fit now they all fit in as not so much as each item more expensive

timeforanewstart · 13/12/2020 02:14

Don't stockings just add more expense as well ?
I spend about £150 on presents per teenage dc to fill a stocking would cost another £50 i reckon unless i filled with rubbish
Pants aren't cheap , neither are socks not the ones they wear
I suppose deodorant but i buy them that already so would be just chocolate , i

FixItUpChappie · 13/12/2020 02:19

Why stop? My family always did stocking for each other's in those "between" years - between childhood and when we had husbands/wives/kids of our own Grin

Stompythedinosaur · 13/12/2020 03:05

I think it would be mean to get a stocking for only one dc. Stop when the youngest is 18 if you have to.

IHateCoronavirus · 13/12/2020 03:44

Our cut off for stockings was moving into high school (yr7).
They don’t believe in Santa Clause at that point so presents switch to being from us. Only one of four will be getting a stocking this year. The teens are fine with it, it is an acknowledgement of their growing maturity, and stops is buying tat in order to fill an oversized sock.

micc · 13/12/2020 04:44

When me and my sister go to that age, my mum gave us the money she would usually spend on our stockings and me and my sister would buy each others. I love buying presents so this was so fun for me.

ellentree · 13/12/2020 08:15

We got them as adults until we no longer were with my parents on Christmas Day morning. Sometime early 20s. I loved my stocking so much!

Londonnight · 13/12/2020 08:21

My son is almost 20 and still has a stocking. I will continue until he leaves home. Nothing wrong with an adult having a stocking.

MegaClutterSlut · 13/12/2020 10:07

I will give my ds 18 a stocking. Inlaws make me and dh one too Grin
