Aibu to no longer give ds1 a stocking now he’s turned 18?

I can’t think of a better time to stop.otherwise I’ll be doing it when he’s 30!

I feel a bit mean though!

Ds2 (15) will still get one.

Nooo! My mum sometimes still does me one and I'm 38

bouncydog · 13/12/2020 22:54

When DD is here DM comes over and gets a stocking - shes 86! Ladies get perfume, luxury chocolAtes, favourite tipple and mixers plus lemons etc. All wrapped separately. Maybe a petrol voucher, tin of favourite biscuits, pair of slippers, restaurant voucher etc We’re a small family so Christmas is a big thing in our house. My parents always made Christmas fabulous even though they had a tight budget and we try to do the same,

Hmmm, I think I have asked an unrepresentative sample of people!

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult

My ds is almost 20 and lives with his friend.

I got them both a Christmas stocking, and I probably will still be doing it when he is 30, I will also be sneaking them into their house and pretending that they came from Santa. 🤣🤣

Stopping would probably be the wise thing to do.

You shouldn't go into their house without permission. They have a right to privacy, especially his friend.
HollowTalk · 13/12/2020 23:47

Sorry, @DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult I read your post too quickly and assumed you were sneaking into their home. Apologies, I'm tired.

SquirtleSquad · 13/12/2020 23:50

I mean I'm planning on hanging a stocking at DHs grave once he kicks the bucket in 40 or so years time.. don't let the Christmas magic die.. ever!

SquirtleSquad · 13/12/2020 23:51

@HollowTalk don't tell Santa about this whole permission thing.. Grin

goose1964 · 14/12/2020 00:36

I've done my 32 year old son one.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 14/12/2020 00:44

Sorry,@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficultI read your post too quickly and assumed you were sneaking into their home. Apologies, I'm tired. 🤣🤣 they invite me round all the time, no breaking and entering involved, I promise.

Hohomerryxmas · 14/12/2020 00:57

My DM made a stocking for me until I started my own family, me and DP make a stocking for the DC and for eachother now so my DM stopped. Absolutely love stockings, would be gutted if DP decided to stop making one for me 🤣 IMO you should continue with the stocking.

lakesideadvent · 14/12/2020 00:57

Everyone in my house gets a stocking from Santa.
MIL was taken aback the first time she stayed but she got used to it quick enough.
It is a lovely start to Xmas day and everyone deserves a few nice treats.

Figgyboa · 14/12/2020 02:20

No age limit in my house, everyone gets a stocking. Very harsh giving one child a stocking and not the other one. Xmas Confused

ChristmasUserName2020 · 14/12/2020 02:40

Nah, I’ll be doing one until DS moves out (he’s 17 now and no signs of shifting him 😂😂) I think that’s what my mum did with me. I expect your DS will feel left out if the younger one gets one but not him.

ChristmasUserName2020 · 14/12/2020 02:44

@NastyBlouse

Reading this has made me realise I missed out! My parents stopped doing stockings the same year we had the Father Christmas chat. Which in my case was 8 or 9 I think.

Another one for my Big Book of Upbringing Grievances... (tongue largely in cheek there)

I can’t believe you had ‘The Father Christmas Chat’ 🎅 No wonder you’ve got a Grievance! I always thought that FC was something that kids just worked out, I never realised that some families do it like the ‘period talk’!
TheWeightOfWords · 14/12/2020 04:47

Shock. You can't stop an 18 year old's stocking!

MarmaladeTeepee · 14/12/2020 05:49

We only do stockings for the DC (11 and 8) at the moment as stockings are the presents from Santa. But I think when they have definitely stopped believing (I suspect DS already has and DD is wavering) I will introduce stockings for the whole family.

I like the thought of everyone contributing to each other's stockings, maybe giving the DC £5 or £10 each and getting them to get some things for everyone's stockings which they can then wrap and give to me or DH and we'll stash away until Christmas. We'll still do the stockings on the door with presents magically appearing in the night though Xmas Grin

This thread has just reminded me that our dog needs a new stocking - thank you! He borrowed one of DS's old ones last year because we'd forgotten to buy him one of his own but I've just ordered him this because it's as furry as he is :)

Stopping stockings at 18....the very idea!

incognitomum · 14/12/2020 12:43

spiderlight I still need to get ddog his gifts. I've ordered one of those flapping cats for a close friend's cats. I'll put some catnip in with the parcel too.

incognitomum · 14/12/2020 12:44

Flapping fish not cats Grin

MeringueCloud · 14/12/2020 12:46

@rottiemum88

I've literally never understood the stocking thing. Why are stocking presents any different to regular presents? Each to their own obviously, but yes I'd probably stop now he's an adult.
Me neither!
Imaginetoday · 14/12/2020 12:52

Our rule is any guest staying in my house gets a stocking- regardless of age.
I actually enjoy doing the stockings- typically other presents aren’t always complete surprises whereas stocking items are.
I did say to my sons when they grew out of Father Christmas that if they didn’t say they believed in Santa they couldn’t have a stocking naturally...so we’d have a bit of a wind up on Christmas Eve making them say “I believe” . 😂🤣 used to embarrass them nicely😉. Now they just appreciate me finding “randoms” for them☺️

BluebellsGreenbells · 14/12/2020 12:54

The stocking are for the little thoughtful gifts

Such as eyelash glue, new mug and socks

Things they need or use

The main gift is well the main gift something more expensive they’ve asked for.
