Aibu to no longer give ds1 a stocking now he’s turned 18?

I can’t think of a better time to stop.otherwise I’ll be doing it when he’s 30!

I feel a bit mean though!

Ds2 (15) will still get one.

We do stockings for everyone. We don't open tree presents until after lunch so it's nice to open some gifts at breakfast double the fun.

I think if your DS is still at school, it would be a bit mean not to do one this year. If you want to stop, stop when he goes to uni, it's a more natural end to the tradition. If your other DS isn't autumn born, it would be a bit unfair if he gets a stocking in the sixth form and his brother didn't.

Lemondrops41 · 12/12/2020 15:35

I'm shocked by all these answers! My Mum stopped doing Christmas stockings when my youngest sibling found out that Santa isn't real. The money that would have been spent on the stocking was added to the budget for the main present so we got a more expensive main present from Mum and Dad instead. I was planning on doing the same with my kids.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 12/12/2020 15:37

Very unreasonable IMO

Mine all still get one and they are older than your DS.

Why do you want to stop?

DH and I do them for each other as well...

dancingindungarees · 12/12/2020 15:40

I still get one and I'm in my forties. I took over making DMs one when DF died and I was a teenager. Our pets also have one each.

Hunnihun2 · 12/12/2020 15:42

Do you spend a lot of money on the stockings OP? Personally I wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving someone without a gift it’s a bit mean OP. Unless you literally cannot afford it.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 12/12/2020 15:43

@rottiemum88

Absolutely this! Nothing expensive - edibles, socks, pens, toiletries.

This is exactly my point. Why bother? It's all just so naff.

Actually, it's delightful!

We certainly don't waste money on pointless tat - full size bottles of whisky, gin, whatever for adults; thermal layers, books, edible treats for everyone.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn there's still time! It's lovely if Father Christmas delegates the job to family members for you, but probably just as much fun to build a stocking gradually for yourself over the course of a year.🎄

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 12/12/2020 15:48

Don't stop - all family members get stockings here - doesn't matter if you're 4, 40 or 60!!!

Emeeno1 · 12/12/2020 15:51

No. This is why we no longer have young adults in society but adult sized children.

'When I was a child, I talked like a child, felt like a child, reasoned like a child: when I became an adult, I put from me childish ways.'

DinkBoo · 12/12/2020 15:52

My brother and I still get our childhood stockings every year (I'm 40 in January, he is older), and the first Christmas my DH spent with us he was presented with his own stocking (he's 53).

Stockings are the best!

fourquenelles · 12/12/2020 15:56

Oh you are so funny!

My dogs get stockings too.

PoulePouletteEternellement · 12/12/2020 16:00

Heavens! Of all the things to blame for the general infantilization of society, you pick the offering and receiving of freely chosen gifts, once a year, on Christmas morning? Xmas Grin

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 12/12/2020 16:01

I'm unreasonably sad at the thought of your ds not having a stocking and watching his siblings open theirs.
Here my kids get them till they leave home then they get their main present and stocking filled type bits wrapped up.

Is it fuck 😂

LondonJax · 12/12/2020 16:03

Well, adult sized child or not, I get a stocking from DH every year and he gets one from me. My mum, who died this year aged 90, had a stocking as a child and my dad continued it (as she did for him) as adults. When dad died we, her daughters, took over and I'm proud to say she had a Christmas stocking every year for those 90 years. A few bits like nail varnish, some nice cloth hankies (old school my mum), a nice magazine, bar of chocolate and hand cream - that's all. But the joy it brought was priceless.

Scarby9 · 12/12/2020 16:05

At 15ish, my brother and I started doing stockings for my parents.
They will get theirs this year at the ages of 84 and 85, although this may be the first year (at the ages of 58 and 59) that we don't get ours due to Covid shielding...
You are never too old for a stocking!

CupoTeap · 12/12/2020 16:06

If you are there on Xmas morning you should get a stocking

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 12/12/2020 16:06

DS is 20 and has declared he will never be too old for a stocking. My sister is in her 30s and still gets one from my parents. I think its up to you - I think they are useful for putting in the small bits like phone chargers, sweets, lottery tickets etc that would look a bit rubbish wrapped up as separate gifts. DS still puts his outside his bedroom door and comes in to me first thing to open it on my bed.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 12/12/2020 16:06

Dh has said no stockings this year because the (grown up) dcdont really get much apart from big gifts. I am very sad. (And I’m still doing them)

poshme · 12/12/2020 16:13

Everyone gets stockings in my house.

I'm looking forward to when the kids take over doing my stocking, but for the moment I do them all.
If we stay at my parents, my mum does stockings for adults

ImEatingVeryHealthilyOhYes · 12/12/2020 16:18

No don’t stop! Stockings are lovely things, and a bit magical. My ex mil still makes me one and I’m 45 and divorced from her ds! (We still have a great relationship) I love it.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/12/2020 16:20

I do stocking for my family - for my DH, my DDs (age 23 and 28) and my DM who is 80! I also get one done for me. We love stockings in our family!

june2007 · 12/12/2020 16:22

I,d do one but maybe make hints that 18 year old could do one for you as well.

gumball37 · 12/12/2020 16:23

Wow. I got a stocking and loads of gifts until I was 33... And it only stopped then because my mom died. I can't imaging no longer giving or getting gifts from loved ones just because of age.

DonnaScozzese · 12/12/2020 16:24

Please do a stocking for him! 18 isn't old! He's probably had a crap year. No stocking would be 2020 levels of shitness. No way could I give one to my youngest and ignore my oldest.

CodenameVillanelle · 12/12/2020 16:24

YABU if the younger one is getting one. Stop when he turns 18. My mum stopped the year she got her first grandchild!
