Aibu to no longer give ds1 a stocking now he’s turned 18?

I can’t think of a better time to stop.otherwise I’ll be doing it when he’s 30!

I feel a bit mean though!

Ds2 (15) will still get one.

Everyone under our roof Christmas Eve gets a stocking (including the last minute dash & using a pillow case cover when we ended up with one of DC's friends). Our dogs get one and the 2 bastard feral cats get them.

Unicant · 12/12/2020 17:27

Awww I think as long as a child is living at home id do a stocking... its just a bit of fun! And they dont have to have expensive things in just sweets and they dont need to be massive etc.... just something cute to wake up to on Christmas day.
My gran did mine until I was 25! (Whenever I was at home for Christmas a couple of years I was away working)

missnevermind · 12/12/2020 17:30

@myhobbyisouting

Yes to the stocking. Hope you got him an advent calendar or you're as good as gone to him already!
😁DS is away at uni. We expect him home around the 18th. I came to an agreement with him this year over his Advent calendar. I would buy him one and hang it with the rest of the children's but DH would 'Look after it' for him until he was home 😁
Susanwouldntlikeit · 12/12/2020 17:31

I will keep doing for mine forever Grin

Brunt0n · 12/12/2020 17:36

@Emeeno1

No. This is why we no longer have young adults in society but adult sized children.

'When I was a child, I talked like a child, felt like a child, reasoned like a child: when I became an adult, I put from me childish ways.'

Oh bore off 😴 Bet you’re popular at parties, absolute fun sponge
Plussizejumpsuit · 12/12/2020 17:38

Why would you stop? We do stockings for adults. Feels a bit sad tbh.

DartmoorDoughnut · 12/12/2020 17:46

Stockings never end! I’m 38 and my brother is 35 and we now buy bits for our parents stockings and they buy things for ours. They only stopped doing the total stocking when I stopped going home for Christmas 6years ago aka when DS1 was around 😂

Twobrews · 12/12/2020 17:47

I don't think my older two would be bothered if I stopped them but they'll get them for the younger children's benefit.
I find them a chore and really expensive to be honest. DH and I didn't have them as a child so don't really have the nostalgia for them as others seem to.

Musmerian · 12/12/2020 17:52

I’ve stopped this year : mine are 25, 20 and 17. They’re a bit miffed but it was costing me an extra £200.

Inextremis · 12/12/2020 17:55

I'm spending Christmas with DH (56) and our friend (45) who is our bubblemate. I am doing stockings for both of them. There is no age cut-off - stockings are fun!

ChristmasTree999 · 12/12/2020 17:59

I gently suggested that I stop doing stockings for DS (21) and DD (18) and just carry on for DD aged 10. The 18 year old was absolutely disgusted with that idea. I’m doing the bloody stockings 😬

HeronLanyon · 12/12/2020 18:01

Well i helped Father Christmas out a couple of years ago and sorted the stockings for my mum (80s) partner (50s) sibling (60s) bil (60s). All sharing cottage. Why on earth can’t an 18 years old have a stocking ? As you get older they become a lovely way of giving small stuff - no need to can el the order with Father Christmas ?

Loshad · 12/12/2020 18:04

I have stopped them for this year, my youngest is 20. With all boys they had become a very expensive extra, some of the stuff was never used and so I had a discussion with them all over the summer and certainly the older three were in agreement that it was becoming an excess of consumerism.
On the subject of advent calendars I picked ds4 up from uni today, he was the last one left in his house ( bad working mummy couldn’t get him before today)
There were 3 advent calendars in the house, ( inc one sent to ds4 by my mother) none were even opened beyond about day 3. They get past it folks.

LBOCS2 · 12/12/2020 18:04

My DM did me a stocking until she died when I was 29, at which point my sister and husband took over for me and I took over for my sister.

So I think YWBU to stop for your 18yo!

Numbersarefun · 12/12/2020 18:06

If he’s still at school, I would do a stocking. As mine are now a bit older, we do it a bit differently. There will be 5 of us for Christmas and each person does one for someone else - a bit like secret Santa.

vinoandbrie · 12/12/2020 18:07

We have stockings here for all the family, including me and DH! I can’t imagine not doing one for our kids, but admittedly when they move out and establish their own homes I guess I would stop then... I wouldn’t want them to be without a stocking any year, it’s a bit of fun and goodness knows this year especially we need all the joy we can find.

mbosnz · 12/12/2020 18:08

@Justmuddlingalong

If you're under my roof on Christmas morning, you get a stocking.
Glad I'm not the only one, lol.
mbosnz · 12/12/2020 18:09

Oh, we all have advent calendars as well. Xmas Grin

ikltownofboothlehem · 12/12/2020 18:13

My mum still does one for me. I'm 51.

Thedarknightsaredrawingin · 12/12/2020 18:15

@mbosnz us too. It’s good fun.

Zoflorabore · 12/12/2020 18:16

My ds will be 18 in March and i wouldn’t dream of not giving him a stocking. Have a dd too who is almost 10 so would be really unfair of me.

We’re even doing a personalised stocking for our new puppy who will be 12 weeks old on Christmas Day.

santasmincepie · 12/12/2020 18:17

I don't think you necessarily have to go out of your way to get stocking presents for adults. A lot of presents are small enough to fit in a stocking anyway. If you have small gifts and an old stocking hanging around, you may as well put the small things in it. For example, this year I've got my mum somd slippers, a recipe book and some nice chutney to go with it, and a chocolate orange. Nothing elaborate. But I'll put the food items in a stocking. It's more fun that way

TheGremlinsAreComing · 12/12/2020 18:21

@mbosnz

Oh, we all have advent calendars as well. Xmas Grin
Us too Xmas Smile
Youseethethingis · 12/12/2020 18:28

@santasmincepie exactly!
I just finished DH stocking and it contains a new wallet, a metal wallet photo card of the DC, socks, bath salts, a mug, his favourite sweets and a bottle of rum.
A stocking doesn’t have to be childish tat, for adults it’s a nice little bundle of treats.

happymummy12345 · 12/12/2020 18:36

I've never heard of or known anyone who does stockings for anyone except children who still believe in Father Christmas. I thought that was the whole point of them, the child hangs it up on Christmas Eve and hopes Father Christmas will come and fill it up? I'd never even think of doing them for any other reason or for any other person at all. Our son is 5 so still believes but when he stops believing he won't have a stocking anymore because he will know it's not real. So what's the point of it?
