Thanks @GoblinDaughter for the title

It’s nearly December, Father Christmas is busy putting the final touches to his toys on the workshop and we are busy elves preparing for a somewhat different Christmas this year.

please post any bargain info IN BOLD to make it easier to scroll through the thread.

To make things bold you:
Put a star each side of what you want to make bold like this but without the space between the star and the writing *

Just a reminder you can watch the thread by clicking on ‘watch this thread’ at the top of the first message. It’s much easier for everyone than so many place marking every time which can use up a fair chunk of each thread to scroll through Thanks

@Whalewithnosnail

Has anyone seen a chess set on their travels. All the ones I find seem to be travel magnetic versions (so small) or £40 posh. I'm just looking for a set for my 5 and 7 year old to learn on. Maybe around £10?
compendium £10

a home for each piece in the storage is good

Restlessinthenorth · 13/12/2020 06:41

To continue the game theme, last night we discovered that our kids love bingo. Anyone ever bought a set that they would recommend?

runningpink · 13/12/2020 07:03

@mummabear74

The 2year old:
Chunky beads for threading
Orchard toys game (these are great and never too young to start playing then)
Duplo
Nice books
Jigsaw
Magnetic shapes
Aqua draw mat
Play dough

11year old craft:
Marbling kit
Knitting set
Sewing set

@Iggi999 the range had some hand weights in the other day, i didn’t pay much attention to see what type they were sorry.

I need a present for an 18 month old girl. I was chatting to my friend yesterday and she was telling me about the farm set she got her little girl. Guess the farm set i got won’t be wanted then 😩 budget about £20-30 if anyone can help.

@BorisSortYourHairOutAndBrexit

Does anyone know if George at Asda often do online discount codes or if they have big discount events like TU at Sainsbury’s?

There are some Jim jams I’ve got my eye on but I’m not sure whether to risk it and wait until after Christmas hoping they still have them in the right size!

Thank you Xmas Smile

Not usually, things just go in the sale at the end of the season. I'd snap them up now.

No good for Christmas this year ( although they say 17th Dec is the cut off ) this company selling amazing Danish jewellery designs had fabulous Black Friday deals. Lots of things in the Outlet section were 70% off -earrings £7, necklaces £10. These are sold in a local high end clothes shop at £30-£50!
They look high quality, come separately with gift bags but also a couple of proper cardboard gift bags (and a yummy Danish sweet!).Took about 10 days to arrive. One to watch in the Christmas sales for sure.

@LyraSilvertongueBelacqua

DD announced today she would quite like Gravitrax! I thought I was done!

Is it a good present for a 7 year old?

Any bargains or tips and tricks for it?!

Thank you!

I offer you (in my local) Body Shop spend £45 and get a decent sized gift set free

@LyraSilvertongueBelacqua my DS age 7 and has it and loves it. He's a real builder and is now confident enough to make his own designs (there are instructions for a number in the set)

It's made by Ravensburger so excellent German quality.

I'd get the starter set, £35. We got it for £25 on Prime Day in October, but it's probably a bit late now to get an offer?

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 13/12/2020 08:06

@lolly12 I bought the logo game 2 for my mum as she loves games. We played the original version all together, last time we played my eldest dd (11) was actually pretty good and my youngest (7) knew some so was on a team with an adult. They both love playing it when we go over there so I'm hoping the updated one will be a little easier for them as the originalhas lots of brands that are no longer around. Would highly recommend as a fun family game!

Christmasmcchristmasface · 13/12/2020 08:07

For the crumpets to Tipperary - have you contacted local bakeries or cafes in the area where you fil lives to see if they can deliver? You can get in the supermarkets but I’d say the chances of getting a delivery slot would be v low and not worth it for one pack of crumpets

LyraSilvertongueBelacqua · 13/12/2020 08:13

@Restlessinthenorth Argos have a decent bingo set with a spinner for the balls that my DD loves. M&S have a Christmas set with 40% off at the mo.

M&S had 40% off games in store and 30% off gifting.

LyraSilvertongueBelacqua · 13/12/2020 08:15

@ritzbiscuits thank you! I think we'll get the starter set then. £10 off is a fab deal!

The Entertainer has 10% off all toys (ends today) but don't sell Gravitrax.

Theimpossiblegirl · 13/12/2020 08:23

@whatwillicallmyself
They is just the kind of genius idea I was hoping for. These will be the world's most expensive crumpets but Fil doesn't ask for anything and I know it's the one thing he misses bring able to buy.

Flackattack · 13/12/2020 08:25

@Salamander91 looks like lots of people are having trouble with Matalan - judging by the comments on social media!
I’m annoyed I ordered some bits (after it ignoring all the voucher codes!) and the one thing I wanted has now been refunded - no email and the rat has been dispatched. I’ve contacted and then looked on socials and it seems a right mess!!!
My friend ordered and got sent two, charged twice - returned one and still no refund. Bad times. You have to feel for those in customer service!

whoknows1230 · 13/12/2020 08:29

I need one more present for DD 11.

Her younger sister has lots of things that can be opened and played with immediately but looking at her pile, there’s nothing she can really do by herself on Christmas Day. She’s got things like a couple of books, an oodie, the cinnamon buns, a tie-die kit, a Sharpie set and a couple of games.

Any ideas of what else I can get please? She’s not into make up yet. Budget of around £25 but happy to go a bit higher.

whoknows1230 · 13/12/2020 08:32

I should add that she’s got an Echo and doesn’t need anything for her room. I feel like she needs a toy but I don’t know what!

Freeekedout · 13/12/2020 08:39

Whoknows Have a look at The Works. They've got loads of craft type boxes, 2 for £10. Got a lovely needle felting kit for DD10 yesterday but there were plenty to choose from. I've also got a modern calligraphy for kids book (Amazon) and some brush pens and paper. And some cross stitch fabric with fifty threads. Just looking for some small cross stitch patterns now.

SomethingInTheWaySheCooks · 13/12/2020 08:40

On the chess set front, I played chess for my country and as a child and tend not to like any of the fancy chess sets. I’d recommend a tournament chess set which is regulation size and very simply designed. It’s the generic set that would be used by a lot of clubs teaching chess and in tournaments. Something like this www.amazon.co.uk/Andux-Pieces-Rollable-QPXQ-01-42x42cm/dp/B078XT7YD1/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&smid=AI0DEM54106VN&psc=1&keywords=Tournament+Chess+Set&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUEyU0g4VE05MzFLUE5RJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMjQwMzg0U1NGMkk5OU5YOUhGJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA4ODUwMjgxMlJTWVk3NUQ5VlAyJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1607848554&sr=8-1-spons
It also has the notation which is useful and can also be bought with a harder folding board. The pieces are lovely and big and distinguishable!

Thank you, that’s a really good idea. She completed her first mini cross stitch earlier this year so something along those lines would be great
dizzygirl1 · 13/12/2020 08:43

Dm has now decided she'd like a talc powder puff.... Any idea where I could get one? Especially as I need to post it to her..... Next weekend 🤦‍♀️

runningpink · 13/12/2020 08:51

Is there ever discounts at the Lego shop?

The set I want is OOS at all the nearby Argos stores and I don’t hold much hope of it coming back in stock. A family member gets discount there as well annoyingly.

Lego store is the next cheapest place for it

Try the dmc website,livecrafts or hobbycraft for free patterns. Alternatively Etsy have lots if different characters etc.
Dolphintrainer · 13/12/2020 08:56

@whoknows1230 would she like -
Bath bomb making kit
Air drying modelling kit (there are some great ones about)
Sticker by number book (again some great
ones around that definitely aren’t for small kids. Like famous art, landmarks, animals)
Watercolour book and paints/brush pens

MissMarple0203 · 13/12/2020 08:56

Can I please have some suggestions for gift for grandparents!? Thanks!

eitak22 · 13/12/2020 08:57

Also @whoknows1230 what about Lego dots? You can make jewellery boxes or photo frames with them?
