Called back to consultant after DS brain MRI

hello, my DS aged 7 has been having nausea, sickness and headaches since November and through lots of pushing managed to get an MRI which was on Monday eve - we were told to expect results in 2 weeks. Today I received a phone call from the paediatric consultants secretary asking myself and hubby to go in tomorrow at noon. I’m terrified. Has anyone else got experience of this? What’s scared me most is that they have asked me to bring hubby. They have requested that we don’t bring DS. I don’t even know what I’m asking for on this thread, maybe someone that has been in a similar situation? Thanks x

Thinking of you. It is shitty news but you are getting it sorted. It's a very good hospital with great staff. Look after each other x

So very sorry to read your update, OP. I hope that further investigations make things clearer and a treatment pathway presents itself. There is a lot of support out there should you need it.

Jemimapuddleduk · 23/06/2022 14:36

So sorry to hear this. I read your thread last night but didn’t want to post as I was hoping for a more postive outcome. We had a similar phone call on a Friday morning in January in 2016, asking me and husband (not baby ds) to go into royal manchester childrens on the Monday to discuss blood results. As it was I could not wait the weekend so rang back and demanded to know more over the phone ahead of the meeting. In our case it was a type of blood cancer (AML). Ds is now 7 and doing well. We were in hospital for 6 months. I would like to offer my support and feel free to pm me with any questions you may have. We’ve been there and come out the other end. Sending lots of strength to you, your dh and your darling boy.

I am sorry OP. I hope these investigations happen very quickly and whatever is causing the tumour is treatable and your son recovers well. Lots of love to you and your DH must be terrifying.

So sorry that you have had this news. I hope further investigations are fast. If you can, keep us updated as we MN mums are rooting for you.

Frazzled2207 · 23/06/2022 14:44

very sorry to hear your latest update
I do have friends who’ve had similar scenarios with their children (all of whom are now healthy) and they have all had top class care and still talk about it today. If you are being referred to the Radcliffe that will be one of the best places in the country to deal with your son’s condition.

wishing you the very best. Soon there will be a proper “plan” and that should make it all easier to deal with. I hope so.

Quartz2208 · 23/06/2022 14:44

Take a deep breath first of all. Given its location there is every chance it is a benign tumour not cancerous. Have they said anything about that. People hear tumour and it is not always cancerous.

But you have gotten him treatment - best case is that it is a benign tumour that can be easily surgically removed and he can medicate in the meantime and go back to normal

I'm so sorry to hear this news. I too read your post last night and had my fingers crossed for a positive outcome for you all.
You sound incredibly strong and the John Radcliffe is an amazing hospital. I'm wishing you all the strength needed.

It was just as well that you pushed for an MRI. Please be kind to yourself and make time for yourself during the journey which will involve treatment Flowers

I’m so sorry OP. Well done for advocating for your boy.

You must feel totally overwhelmed. Things will move quickly now, you will meet lots of people and they all want the best for your lad. There remains a wide range of things it could be and if you do feel you need to Google, please stick to websites such as CCLG or Brain Tumour Trust.

People will want to help and if you have people who can help on a practical basis then let them. For example, stocking up your fridge and freezer, plenty ready meals, tins and quick meals. Try to ensure your husband and you both eat, keep hydrated, work as a team.

we’re here for you too

In so sorry you are facing this OP, it’s incredibly unfair. If it helps, JR has an excellent reputation for neuro, so he’s in incredibly safe hands as you negotiate the next steps

I will hold you in my thoughts x
