My name is Hillbilly and I'm a camping junkie (or camping nerd as I was recently called!). I spend so much time on this topic here on MN it's almost embarrassing. Nuff said :-)

I like that cooking pot. I have a collapsible kettle and I do love it very much.

The haybox thing rings a bell.

Can't you bake cakes by putting the mixture in a biscuit tin and burying it (I seem to remember Gordon Ramsay doing this). Maybe the same principle could apply to stews? Or is there more to it than that? Perhaps he was near some geothermal doo-dahs or something?

Yes it was me that made a hay box and very well it worked too.

Am I the only one who's a little scared of the death buff? Is it really a good idea to wrap insect repellent round your whole head? Could be perfectly safe, I know Hmm

Unless you are an insect (or I believe a cat) then you will be perfectly safe. I also have the matching death socks which I wear all the time and I'm currently strong and vibrant and not at all dead.

She could be an insect Slubber, or a cat. Never can tell who someone is going to be with all this internetness. Although I can vouch for your vibrant aliveness at least.

Glad to hear that Slubber! Am neither insect nor cat, but will check contents of death buff before buying even so.

Shirazplease...it's a tad unpractical (because of the size of it).. but there is actually a camping slow cooker option called the wonderbag

Report
YellowDinosaur · 02/07/2013 16:54

That's just a ready made hay box Hettie - works on the same principle.

You can slow cook some stuff using a thermos. I brought a casserole style thermos all the way back from spain for this very purpose!

YES there is a decathlon at lakeside. Will just have to persuade dp to go on m25 (still Traumatised after legoland trip last week).

By the way what are SIMs?

Sefl Inflating Mats/Mattresses They sort of roll up quite small and then you unroll them and undo the valve and they, well, self-inflate. You have to give them a bit of a puff at the end before you close the valve but they are the end of annoying foot pumping for air-beds and also a lot warmer because you don't have to heat all the air in the air-bed with your own body heat. They are also so much more comfortable than they look.

Losty, I've NEVER blown my own SIM. But I'm going off again on 12th so will anticipate my own fun. Grin

I've just bought an atago urban escape 5 person tent from Halfords. Have I done the right thing?

We usually camp in a replica Viking tent, this would be our first modern camping attempt...(our normal tent looks like this one
