My name is Hillbilly and I'm a camping junkie (or camping nerd as I was recently called!). I spend so much time on this topic here on MN it's almost embarrassing. Nuff said :-)

Ooh, camping drool thread. Well, I haven't actually camped in a gazillion years (must be over a year as baby now 7 months and I can't remember going whilst pregnant). That's baaaaaad.

But but but, I won't let that stop me getting all excited about gadgets so love reading the posts. You never know, the sun might actually shine a lot this winter.

Favourite stuff I've used: storm kettle, SIMs, bell tent, stove (essential for winter camping in woods, though you might die [irresponsible]), pie iron, axe. Oh, and when trees allow it, I love using my hammock - just something about hanging there, looking out over the fields.

Things I'm dying to use on next camp: Beautiful stainless steel delta pegs and my Jompy instant water heater.

Oh, and travel cot. Which I'm not really so excited about, but hey, I guess he's still a little young to look after himself. Wink Two weeks to go, let the countdown begin!

I don't need a buff, but thank you for not making me google buff. That would have been dreadful.

Have a link to the waka waka goodness in return

Thank you DameFanny, I will have a proper look at that in the morning. My eyes are too old to look at all the tiny writing on my phone.

You lot are crazy but lovely, I'm sure.

Btw, after having just watched the news, can I please put my sensible hat on for one second and ask people please, please not to light Chinese lanterns. Apart from the obvious fire risk as seen in the West Midlands, it's heartbreaking to hear of animals being killed. BBC news link

'Sfunny really. I would definitely qualify as a glamper (particularly now I am the proud owner of a White Company poncetastic tea light chandelier (doffs cap at shiraz) and mood changing battery tea lights ). But round the campfire in my ancient navy camping fleece, full thermals, walking boots, woolly hat and head torch, I could easily be mistaken for a very fat miner. Whereas really I should be wafting round in a negligee-style dress with a hand-knitted woolly scarf and Hunter wellies or similar a la the Happy Campers book (which is what first got me into all this bell tent lark in the first place).

Back to this thread though, MN Camping is responsible for me (or DH in some cases) now owning:

A Cadac (bad decision as it turned out because once we sold our VW camper we now can't fit it in the car - anyone want one?)
A kelly kettle
A 5m (rather than 4m) bell tent ('accidentally' bought when trying to see if Obelink would actually deliver it - turned out they did - ho hum).
A number of different camping storage solutions
A pop up kettle/colander/washing up bowl
A pop up vase
LIDL XL picnic rugs
A Cool Camping England book (£4.99 fron Book People - now £3.99 - bah!)
A tea light chandelier
Battery tea lights

Oh my God - I really am an addict. ShockGrin

Oh and SalIAm - yes yes to avoiding Chinese lanterns. I have just opened my Camping magazine (to which I subscribe obv) and the editor is talking about his tent nearly going on fire because of one at a festival recently. At Eweleaze people are always setting them off and, as you say, as well as the serious risk of fire, there are the awful consequences for animals. The RSPCA have a petition to ban them I think. Will see if I can find a link.

Oh no - now need a Buff! Hadn't even heard of them before tonight and now essential camping kit.

Just realised MN is also responsible for my fab camping table and stools.... And the ikea fleece rugs...

I'm deluding myself that I may have a hope in hell of minimalist camping aren't I although MN could be responsible for a whole lot more teeny tiny kit!

HA-LOO-MI Grin Grin Grin What a lovely way to start the day.

MummyPig 'very fat miner' made me inhale my coffee, you have obviously seen me at the end of the camping day, I just didn't realise the uncanny resemblance. I'm going to think of that every time I camp now.

You need to find yourself a Decathlon Raven.

Report
SalIAm · 02/07/2013 07:56

I second what Losty said about Decathlon. You can spend days days in there...

Report
Blu · 02/07/2013 08:31

I would love to spend days on a GoOutdoors - there seems to be a wider selection of gear and bargains - Decathlon isn't as cheap as it used to be.

I eschew big battery-slurping lanterns for reading, though I now want a WakaWaka.

My 'this year' gadget is this you can wrap the stem round bits of tent or your chair, hang it up, or make it into a large bse to stand upright. I mould it over my kindle. I used it for a week and haven't needed new batteries. £2-80 in Blacks atm.

OK now I definitely need a buff. And a hammock and a bell tent. DH is not going to be happy.

What a lovely thread!

Blu · 02/07/2013 08:41

SportsDirect and other places do buffs that don't cost £14.

Keztrel · 02/07/2013 08:56

Thanks Blu.

OK my plan for today is to create a camping gear board on Pinterest.

I might do some work too, but only if there's time.

Can someone explain Pinterest to me? I just don't get it - is it just somewhere to store photos in subject groups or summat?

Report
MinimalistMommi · 02/07/2013 09:46

Mummy don't ever go on there, it will be a time suck like MN.
If you do venture forth, try typing Bell tent into the search box on Pinterest and all will be revealed. It's basically an image gallery and when you click on pic it will take you to original source. If you have an account, you can pin your own images as you find them around the web and you want a record.
