The Glass of Wine, The Campfire and The Awfully Big Adventure

We've all blethered on pleasantly on Seashells' lovely previous thread and, with the school holidays approaching, lots of us are about to start our summer adventures( not all of which are in tents....!) This thread is for us all to check back in and generally keep in touch. So we've packed up our Icey-Teks and our Tarps and our Death Socks, gently doused the burning embers of our planning campfire and rinsed out the wine glasses.

We're ready for our Awfully Big Adventure.

Come and talk about yours here (even if you're staying put!)

Things I am pleased to be back to (in a vain attempt to not be sad that it will be a while before I am off camping again...

Crap reality tv (sorry...)

my hair straighteners. Thank you thankyou thankyou whoever invented them. Haven't actually missed them while away but itwill be a pleasant change to not look like I have stuck my fingers in a socket! Walking to the shower block with this hairstyle and sporting the very attractive leggings stuck up my bum crack look is not something I am going to be repeating in my real life!!!

The internet and you lot! I don't have a smart phone and even if I did there was no mobile reception at the campsite. Which was actually really nice

Sorry I am blethering.... SHould also say that dh has said we should get a trailer! And he is serious and has been looking on the internet and everything! Clearly this means only one more thing - I need to buy more stuff to fill it!!!

YellowDinosaur · 07/08/2011 20:06

Oh yes notwaving you have reminded me.

MISSSAL I AM NOT HAPPY!!! What WERE you thinking wishing for rain and cold weather on the day I left on my camping trip!

Funtimewincies · 07/08/2011 20:15

Thanks yellow for the vino and to notwaving for the full update Grin.

I'm don't think I'll bother with the rest of MN any more. I've been doing a quick catchup and it seems to be the usually fighting and stropping Sad.

SeaShellsMyDogSmells · 07/08/2011 20:17

Grin poor Sal, she will be sat at the back of her bell tent scared to come out and face all of us as we stand dripping wet in our macs! Those weather gods sound appeased though we are meant to have a hot week down here :)

No wonder we all get on here we are all rather similar (in a good way) I've lost count of nhs employees past and present on this thread!

notwavingjustironing · 07/08/2011 20:21

I'm not NHS I'm shallow advertising Grin

Feel free to throw things ......

SeaShellsMyDogSmells · 07/08/2011 20:41

No lobbing of stuff here, but I'll give you Wine instead to drown your sorrows in Wink

Well, we now have torrential rain and a thunder storm-really impressive, thank goodness I'm not in a tent

Ok it's now hailing-wow!!!

VivaLeBeaver · 07/08/2011 21:07

I'm camping in a very wet Wales at the minute. Thunder, lightening, the works.

Campsite is very basic. One women's shower for the whole site and it's tiny, my standard shower cubicle at home is bigger. And there are slugs up the Walls. Oh and I've run out of gas in the camper van, no ehu so fridge is a bit warm. Not sure my chicken salad will be safe for lunch tomorrow. Am hoping the rain stops soon, we've booked to go dolphin watching boat trip tomorrow.

YellowDinosaur · 07/08/2011 21:08

notwaving I always wanted to work in advertising - I loved art and graphic design at school. Not really sure what happened... Grin

MisSal its Ok I don't really hate you much. Come out and have a wine

notwavingjustironing · 07/08/2011 21:12

It's worse than you think.

It's telly advertising .....

Phew. All caught up now, and gutted that I was stuck in stoopid north Lincs with PIL (apologies to any denizens on this thread) and therefore not around to welcome Lost back, or send Slubber off. Sad

Nikkid (or anyone) - what's the Wellington Country Park like from a camping perspective? We're trying to squeeze in a slightly longer camping trip than last time's one-night inaugural do Grin, before the festival at the end of the month. The park's within about an hour's drive from us, so viable.

YellowDinosaur - I was also a Thames canoer (canooer? canoeer?) as a kid and also made to capsize in chilly conditions for no reason! I eventually gave it up, not because of the capsizing, but because I'm really sensitive to fibreglass. Sad Am loving all this kayaking. Our next-door-but-one-neighbours have a Canadian canoe and have promised to lend it to us to take on the Thames (tis, ooh, about 300 yds from garden) but I think it'll have to wait on DSs getting a bit older.

lovecat, it's days old now but Happy Anniversary for the 3rd! DH and I celebrated our 6th anniversary on the 4th. He was in York at a conference and I was staying the other side of the HUmber with his parents and DSs, but still.

Snorted my G'n'T out of nose at 'African Greys'. Yes. It is that sort of evening. It's my second G'n'T too.

Luminous Gherkin. I bloody love this thread. Grin

YellowDinosaur · 07/08/2011 21:51

Vivalebeaver your camping trip sounds like the low points of ours - the slugs in the shower sound particularly special! Fingers crossed all improves soon...

At the moment looking at the forecast in the Lakes I am not disappointed we came home as we would have been packing away in pissing rain. WIsh it had been better weather and ds2 would have been less unsettled - then it would have been fab, but I think we have done the right thing coming home before it is all bad!

notwaving don't worry I'll still talk to you! Smile

lostinwales · 07/08/2011 21:53

Viva where are you, I am always available for wet welsh camping rescue if close enough.

Although I am also a huge amount little bit pissed, having taken the rest of our pastis up to my friends for tea . I miss camping so much already whilst at the same time I am enjoying immensely brushing my teeth without worrying about a dutch man having a pooh in the next cubicle at the same time Smile

YellowDinosaur · 07/08/2011 21:56

Reshape I think the word you are looking for is canoeist Grin. Blame it on the gin. I've only had one wine so far (must stop looking at lovely outwell tents I have no hope of affording for several years and go to the fridge...

You have made me laugh too reminding me of african grey and luminous gherkins. Dh is looking at me like this Hmm as I snigger at the computer. Not sure how to begin explaining...Grin

YellowDinosaur · 07/08/2011 21:59

cross posted lost... Thanks for that lovely image of a shitting dutchman while trying to brush my teeth Grin

brambleschooks · 07/08/2011 21:59

Throws not waving a beer. Yellow, have a marshmallow.
Very very wet here in Cornwall this afternoon. Fortunately got the kayaking with baby seals sorted this morning but stayed in the harbour as we would have blown out to sea otherwise.

lostinwales · 07/08/2011 22:02

notwaving I am currently doing a degree in IT so I don't have to rely on the NHS, sometimes if I have to be nice to one more person....

YY to whoever mentioned the rest of MN at the moment, I have come back from our holiday and been so fed up with the other threads, it is either predictable or shouty and I like neither. Stuff it, a big hug for everyone, I've had enough to drink.

YellowDinosaur · 07/08/2011 22:03

Cheers bramble. White wine? Sorry to hear its wet but your seal trip sounds fab. Glad you didn't blow out to sea - we would have missed you!

YellowDinosaur · 07/08/2011 22:05

Don't go lost - have some more wine!

ReshapeWhileDamp · 07/08/2011 22:09

canoeist Yesh. Thatsh it. Grin

Actually they're very weak GnTs. It doesn't take much these days.

brambleschooks · 07/08/2011 22:14

True. Lobs in a crate of chilled crabbies for good measure.
Doesn't mention nearly falling down mineshaft either.

Was slubberngoing via dover or north sea? Weather doesn't look good on the east ( or west!). But she is well hard. She will have her Viking hat on and be coordinating the rowing and bailing.

lostinwales · 07/08/2011 22:29

Oh I'm not never leaving this thread, I never thought words on a screen would be so lovely, just letting the rest of MN to stew for a while. What's not to love about African Grey's and a good bit of kayaking. I wasted a good bit of holiday to keep up with you lot, Pastis is sending me to bed soon though

brambleschooks · 07/08/2011 22:36

Lost, I missed that about the activity in the next cubicle... Reminds me of ds1 talking to a friend about his night in another friend's caravan. D's friend had a new xbox and was expecting ds to be hooked, but all ds could blether on about was 'and this caravan, it had this shower room where you could 'have.the.toilet' and have a shower at the same time. You could sit on the loo and have a shower. At the same time'
Viva hope the worst of the weather has gone by.

MisSalLaneous · 07/08/2011 22:55

On the upside, I will join Lovecat in her extreme job change quest and become a fortune teller. I'd use my newfound connections and will be minted. Always thought career advice at school level was overrated.

On a separate note, I'm going to have to save up for a notebook - by the time I reach the bottom of the thread I've forgotten everything I wanted to say to everyone along the way! It's good to have most of you all back, and fingers crossed that Slubber's having a good trip in the land of forrin.
