The Glass of Wine, The Campfire and The Awfully Big Adventure

We've all blethered on pleasantly on Seashells' lovely previous thread and, with the school holidays approaching, lots of us are about to start our summer adventures( not all of which are in tents....!) This thread is for us all to check back in and generally keep in touch. So we've packed up our Icey-Teks and our Tarps and our Death Socks, gently doused the burning embers of our planning campfire and rinsed out the wine glasses.

We're ready for our Awfully Big Adventure.

Come and talk about yours here (even if you're staying put!)

Roar at bramble

Sal mate don't be embarrassed, you are making the world a better place, particularly the camping kit world Grin, and think of all those lovely helpful taxes you are paying too.

Lost I used to work in a little community hospital too with old lady knees. I love old lady knees.

Well I better crack on with cleaning this shit pit of a house now before we head off tomorrow morning. Also have to go and purchase an emergency triangle and ANOTHER luminous jacket for the car. Strict rules they have in the land of forrin.

Thanks for all your good wishes. Hope to post mit Kindle when I can find a bit of free wifi.

brambleschooks · 06/08/2011 09:09

Delta pegs slubber's hugs and stands to attention.

Today I will be mostly surfing with friends who have arrived for the week. I hope to take my friend out in blue canoe later to see my mates the seals. I wonder if I should treat her to the range of sea shanties I was warbling yesterday - very at one with nature i was too, paddling across the bay with me maties the seals, singing 'what shall we do with a herrin's head' (herrin's head, loaves of bread, to the uninitiated).

lovecat · 06/08/2011 09:52

Hope it's not too late to wish you bon voyage, Slubs, have a wonderful trip. When we see the reports of the mystery mass death of insects across Europe we will know it's down to you....:)

Am also feeling embarrassed about basic uselessness of my job (corporate accounting for evil bank what destroyed t'economy). I put my details into that YouGov site and did the tests to see what else I could do, as I've been there 24 years and am desperate for a change, and having excluded finance from the suggested options (but apparently I am perfect for it...), their suggestion of my ideal career was....

Body Piercer Shock

As I have but the one set of ears pierced once and the thought of having more makes me heave, I don't think I'd be a great advert for my business...

To be fair, they also suggested Art Therapist and Community Play Worker, but Body Piercer was top of the list!

Love the African Greys...:o

Slubberdegullion · 06/08/2011 09:59

[cleaning procrastination]

Ooh bramble, you are the veritable Bill Oddie of the seal world. If you seek a career change I think seal whisperer is sounding pretty good.

Hahahah lovecat. Well you know what they say about death, taxes and body piercing.
They don't say that really.
but still would make an exciting change.

Dh has just enquired why he has to go to Halfords this morning to buy a luminous gerkin.

A JERKIN you arse. No idea why I would write Jerkin. Who even says Jerkin any more these day? Obv mean high-vis vest.

notwavingjustironing · 06/08/2011 10:11

I wouldn't bother with too much cleaning. By the time you come back the dust will have reappeared Grin

Have a lovely time and maybe you and DH could go out for a nice lunch today to make up for last night ?

Bramble - your holiday sounds epic! How long are you away for in total?

OP posts:
SeaShellsMyDogSmells · 06/08/2011 10:21

Morning all!

I posted earlier but it isn't in this thread, so I guess MN decided it was too dull!!

Grin @ African Greys. I can just imagine Daily Mail Family's cat's bum mouths at such a sight!

Bramble your holiday sounds amazing. Was it the sevylor colerado you have? Dh and I were talking about them on the dog walk this morning, I think we will keep an eye on the end if season sales.

Sal-you're lovely, and I haven't met a dull accountant yet so not sure where that stereotype comes from!

Lovecat- eek, bodypiecer hey, well certainly would be a change.... Wink

Slubber-the veterinary world uses lots of qualified physios, though I think you would be amazing in some sort of camping capacity!

Right, house cleaned, dog and children walked and chilling for 30mins as we wait for visitors to arrive-it's stopped raining, now I need sun!

SeaShellsMyDogSmells · 06/08/2011 10:23

Oh, and I did Grin at your dh searching for a luminous gherkin. It all sounds a bit rude for a sat am!

MisSalLaneous · 06/08/2011 12:21

Morning morning everybody. You're all so lovely, you know? I love coming back to our thread and seeing what everyone is up to.

So, in the spirit of sharing, I am bringing you the COOLEST camping coffee filter ever: scroll down a little. I could just give you the product's link anyway, but I love that blog and, uhm, all 3 entries on it. Seriously, yes, yes, it's just a hardcore filter, but you can use it with TENT PEGS. Oh yes indeedy, a tent peg filter coffee maker. What's not to love?

notwavingjustironing · 06/08/2011 12:32

Blimey Sal let's hope Slubber doesn't see that she will be sending her DH off for one - coffee and tent pegs .... What's not to like ? Grin

JetLi · 06/08/2011 16:40

Just back from what should've been a quick trip to Ikea - is there any such thing?? DD1 (aged 2) in the trolley shouting "BIG COCK, BIG COCK, BABY COCK" randomly on the way round. Of course she meant CLOCK but oh the shame Blush

LMAO at African greys Grin & "passing a softie" raised an eyebrow.
I am told I did a mean rendition of The Carpenters Close To You one year in Cyprus, after many many brandy sours. I have no recollection and was sick on my own legs later the same evening - not one of my finer moments. DP held the hair out of my face though & we'd only been together a few weeks. Awww.

Sal - I luurve that coffee filter Shock how fab is that?

Had a quick look in Decathlon - twas majorly busy though. Some good reductions on Vango tents.

Waves to all - only a quick post as we're off out again to Ma JetLi's "Last Supper" event before she flies off to Spain. She likes us all to be together "one last time" in case the plane crashes Hmm

brambleschooks · 06/08/2011 21:25

Sal - loving that filter. Pondering on how to brew up whilst actually in a canoe...

Jet, we are destined for a night out.

Well we've broken the back of the hol and will be back in a week :( a few days turnaround then I will try to find the last remaining nice camping spot in the se, I think. Or maybe Dorset as I would like to freak the ds with the cerne Abbas giant.

Bon voyage, smooth seas and may the only brats be wurst, slubbs. Tent peg salute.

lostineurope · 06/08/2011 21:57

Hello,

ChippyMinton · 06/08/2011 22:35

Loving this thread. Happy camping Slubber, hoping for gut weather etc. for you.

Shock at Cerne Abbas Giant - i see this on a daily basis on my colleague's coffee mug - i think his auntie runs ye olde gifte shoppe nearby. After the African Greys, I should imagine an albatross would spring to mind should the giant ever pull on a pair of tightie whities.

Holy mackerel, I may have just woken the campsite - i am lolling on the bed MNing and DH just crept up to the open window and scared the sh*t out of me by growling through the flyscreen. Oops Grin

lostinwales · 07/08/2011 00:05

I have foolishly added a photo of camp lost for you all to take the mick out of my bunting and probably poor guy ropes, to my profile. This was the campsite in the south of France, I still have to tell you all about the knob heads people who came back at three am off their heads to the pitch opposite us and made so much noise DS2 freaked out completely and lead to me getting up to go to them to go 'Shhhhh, mes enfants, you have woken them up, shut UP'. It made no difference and some of them carried on until dawn. Oh I had so much satisfaction sending the boys to play football near their tents at 8 am (not petty at all, oh no)

notwavingjustironing · 07/08/2011 07:15

Bye Slubber!!

OP posts:
notwavingjustironing · 07/08/2011 07:18

Gah posted too soon - Losty I will fire up the computer later to see the camp.

Bramble - I want the job that enables you to paddle through the summer!

Jetli my sincere condolences Grin

Everyone else - Helloooo!

OP posts:
Slubberdegullion · 07/08/2011 08:10

Farewell all Smile

Next post will be from forrin

brambleschooks · 07/08/2011 08:30

Farewell slubber. If you see canoes drifting across the watery barrier to forrin assume that our navigation has gone very wrong.

Not waving, I lurv my job, which is a good thing as it is bleddy exhausting. I neeeeeed my holidays.

It looks like a canoe day today, but I think first a stroll round the harbour and coffee is called for. Will take the precaution of eyeing up surf and swell. I don't mean speedos either.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 07/08/2011 17:15

Aw. I missed Slubber's parting bash. Sad Bon Voyage! Really looking forward to hearing about your ABA.

Too much on this thread since I left it and came back to read now, as DSs' teatime approaches! Will just say that I have been to Go Outdoors this morning in search of a jacket and returned with Jacket, these rather lovely sandals (with a further 10% off sale price because they were last year's stock), some Kendal Mint Cake for my mum, and cough a Moon Chair for me. I know damn well I'll be swearing at myself when we try to fit it into the car, but it was so comfy. They'd sold out of the cheapy 10cm and 5cm SIMs, alas.

Still have to sort out what to do about my puncture. How do you work out where a SIM is leaky? It's too large to hold under the water in the bath. Perhaps I should take it to the swimming pool.

Right. Am going to cobble something together for tea and then read the thread properly. Grin

YellowDinosaur · 07/08/2011 17:31

Hi all - back a day early Sad. Weather was pretty shite, dh was losing his sense of humour and ds2 was so so tired he was turning into a total brat and we had a couple of hours of on off screaming last night I think because he was totally over tired. Coming home became essential if I wanted to have the chance of EVER persuading dh to come camping again (it is not his idea of a holiday at all although to be fair he didn't make it that obvious)!

Good points:

When it wasn't raining the spot we were in was lovely. Right next to a stream which the boys loved, plenty of space for them to run / play football and frisbee and other kids to play with. Time for dh and I to chill while they did all of the above - again all good.

Dh has agreed that our cool box is shite - should be renamed luke warm box. And has agreed that we need another good one - bring on the icey tek yippee!!!!

Dh has ALSO agreed (in fact volunteered) that 'we need a better tent'. More yippees (although tempered by the fact that it will probably be a while before we can afford one and he was NOT amused by the idea of canvas roulette GrinGrinGrin)

He was also not opposed to the idea of a Cobb - triple whammy yippee! So I have done good on the kit persuasion.

The luggable loo was a total godsend. We were a 5-10 min walk from the loos and with the rain this would have been a disaster. LL with bin bag in the living area for night time wees was perfect.

The boys both stayed up late in the eveing but contrary to expectations and prior experience slept late in the ams (between 7.30 and 8.30) so all good.

Bad Points:

Ds2 tiredness. Dh rattiness (tired and finding ds2 very very taxing). Too much rain and boys too little to 'get' wrapping up against the elements and going out anyway. Boys not liking the campfire smoke / marshmallow and hobnob sandwiches / bananas with chocolate (no they were not ill either!!!) although in fairness this hardly ruined our holiday)

Camping nazis - the wardens on the campsite were clearly frustrated traffic wardens who delighted in telling us, to the cm, where we must pitch our tent despite it being on a slope when there were loads of flat pitches and too close to the firepit. We dug our heels in and they moved us and afterwards were very friendly but it wasn't the best welcome we've ever had.

The complete twats not very nice neighbouring campers who were up drinking and shoutingand swearing until well after 1am on the 3rd night . Lost track of time after that and eventually went to sleep. We were not the only ones complaining to them the next morning and they did shut the fuck up quieten down at a more sociably acceptable time last night!

The campsite (Fisherground in Eskdale):

Camping nazis as above but Alison one of the owners was lovely and helpful.

Great adventure playground / small lake with rafts on for kids to play on. This would all be fab when boys abit older but ours were still a couple of years off getting the most out of this. Not helped by ds1 being desperate to go on the rafts but not actually being prepared to get wet in the process!

Generally a bit over crowded but our pitch although a bit out of the way was actually lovely and peaceful for the most part.

Steam train stopped at the campsite - this was a MASSIVE hit with the boys although unfortunately too expensive to go on more than once.

Eskdale is beautiful but too out of the way for us at the mo when weather not great. We ended up driving to Ambleside and Keswick to find stuff to do with boys inside and so would have been better to go somewhere more centtral until they are old enough to just wrap up and get out regardless of the weather.

Slubbers tip of the Boot Inn was however fantastic and much appreciated!

Anyway that post is FAR too long - off now to catch up on what the rest of you have been up to....

YellowDinosaur · 07/08/2011 17:41

SO read some of your messages and now need a break to cook tea (you have been very chatty!) but in principle I would love a meetup. Stroud / Oxford a long way for us though as we are in Newcastle. I think most of you live in the south don't you so I might have to suck it up! That is if I can persuade dh... Could always just bring myself, my 2 man pop up and lots of wine!

SeaShellsMyDogSmells · 07/08/2011 18:32

Wow you are north yellowdinosaur! I was briefly in Darlo :) no wonder you got wet camping, you are lucky not to be washed away-another mn friend was in whitby and had to admit defeat 2days ago so you did very well in the face of adversity!!

Thread/camping meet up at thistledown was only an early suggestion-it sounded nice :)

Your site sounded fab, and it looks like you can do some serious kit purchasing (:( re canvas roulette, has he no sense of adventure?)

Funtimewincies · 07/08/2011 19:52

Good heavens, I leave you lot alone for one long weekend at the MIL's and all hell breaks loose Shock.

Attracting nutter women, scoffing champagne, wearing speedos, upsetting camping nazis, partying Shock (yes, notwaving I'm looking at you).

Who's got the gin and what other gossip have I missed? Grin

YellowDinosaur · 07/08/2011 19:58

I am very excited about the kit purchasing Seashells and will be off to surf the web for shiny new stuff once I have finished catching up here!!!

Another good point about our trip is that I was better at packing the car than dh Grin and would in fact have been able to take the boys bikes if I had packed this end. To be fair he isn't rubbish but tends to ram it all in rather than sticking small bits and pieces in little nooks and crannies.

I have HUGE tent envy though. Our tent, a proaction nevada 5 tunnel tent if that means anything to anyone (couldn't have told you what it was called before getting it out of the garage 2 weeks ago!) was bought about 7 years ago a bit on a whim and with no research whatsoever. I have always thought it was pretty big until this week! I now covet most of the tents on the campsite! There was a rather lovely canvas one that I took a pic of - will post to my profile so you can have a look if I can work out how to upload pics from my phone. Prob will be a nylon tunnel type one for practicality for us though esp as dh is 6ft 4 so a bell shape wouldn't work for him! I'll enjoy looking though...

Spotted the quechua base seconds one that I have been salivating over for a second weekend tent though and it is lovely. Not sure I'll be able to convince dh on it though as I think the space will be smaller than our current one and if he is serious about getting a bigger one not sure we'll have cash for that too. Sadly won't get much for our current one on ebay after a brief look...

Have now read through the rest of the thread anyway but struggling to remember who said what. Loving the drunken singing and speedo stories Grin. In awe of brambles outdoorsy kayaking surfing and stuff - makes me feel tired just reading it all! Does sound fab though.

Welcome back lost and sorry to miss slubbers departure though...

100% you are going to be camping just up the road from me! Enjoy! I tried to go to that campsite last summer but it was fully booked so we went to another just up the road instead so I will look forward to hearing all about it.

Oh and I am another NHS employee although not all that disgruntled as I try to stick my head in the clouds about all the management and politics stuff or I know I will get hacked off. That will get less easy when I'm a consultant though but I'm taking the scenic route with part time surgical training so although I have been a registrar for what seems like forever I have a way to go yet!

Anyway time to crack open the wine, surf for kit, and I'll be back later!
