Oooooooh, what to do? Do i post this on Breast and bottle feeding or on Weaning? because Annabel Karmel's been telling The Standard that after 4 months breastmilk is not enough to keep babies healthy...

I am extremely surprised at this - the impression I got from weaning information in her earlier books was that she was assuming weaning started at 6 months.

Artichokes · 24/01/2008 22:18

Yup. Read that on the Tube earlier. Got so cross that people started giving me funny looks.

Obviously we should all listen. Annabel is a top scientist and medic. Would trust her over WHO any day.

Brangelina · 24/01/2008 22:18

I'm a bit perplexed about the needing fish and meat for the fatty acids. So what abut vegetarian babies? Has nobody told the woman about the fatty acids in bm? Or even seeds? She is obviously no nutritional expert.....

chankins · 24/01/2008 22:18

hmmm that wouldn't be because telling people to bf for six mo and delay weaning til 6 mo is not very healthy for her business would it ?
And how is she an expert in this ?

but even her own books don't suggest introducing fish and meat (which in this article she says have the nutrients that bm lacks ) till well after 6m

Aitch · 24/01/2008 22:19

shame on you Brangelina... the woman's a qualified harpist, how dare you question her?

pooka · 24/01/2008 22:20

What a lot of old tosh she is spouting. Because she knows best?
Might have something to do with her having a range of "nutritious" baby foods to sell/ books to publicise.

fishie · 24/01/2008 22:20

well of course cheesy fish pie with hidden vegetables is the perfect food for a 17 week old baby, none of your breastmilk rubbish.

bero · 24/01/2008 22:21

Bloody hell. ds1 has obviously had it. Not only was he not weaned until 6.5 months, he didn't get his first meat until well into his second year, and still only has it onceor twice a week.

edam · 24/01/2008 22:21

she is clearly a stranger to logic.

she's a bloody expert on breastfeeding is she? I have a good mind to send her book back

Aitch · 24/01/2008 22:21

i think tbh MrsB that the publisher just crossed out a 4 and wrote in a 6 when the guideline changed, there wasn't an idealistic thing. she's very, very, VERY vocal about what a terrible thing BLW is, i honeslty wonder if this is about making people frightened to wait until children are ready to self-feed?

OP posts:
Brangelina · 24/01/2008 22:22

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the 4-6 month purees in her books all fruit and veg? If so, she is contradicting herself about the "need for meat" and this confirms she is talking out of her bottom.

Brangelina · 24/01/2008 22:23

Oops, slow typing

theyoungvisiter · 24/01/2008 22:24

gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

MrsBadger · 24/01/2008 22:25

well, let us hope she is less libellous than SWMNBN...

Heathcliffscathy · 24/01/2008 22:25

no aitch, it's that she and swcnbn are single handedly propping up the puree=ing industry. it's like the insider with russell crowe except moulinex and braun instead of phillip morris.

S1ur · 24/01/2008 22:26

"....generation of children could end up having health problems because breast milk did not contain enough essential nutrients needed for their development. "

FFS!

Still she does know best - I'm sure this isn't a cynical marketing drive to sell her products.

Honestly I think this advice is bloody scaremongering and inaccurate and likely to confuse mothers further and potentially deter some from bfing for the recommended time and THAT really could be detrimental to some kids. ARrrgh! Bloody woman!

MrsBadger · 24/01/2008 22:26

rofl - the Blender Industrial Complex. And steamers too perhaps?

VVVQV · 24/01/2008 22:26

soph

welliemum · 24/01/2008 22:28

We need to get her here on MN so we can all discuss evidence based weaning together.

Aitch · 24/01/2008 22:30

no, but really... HOW can she just say something like that? [naive]

OP posts:
S1ur · 24/01/2008 22:31

Fine. yes right mrsbadger. Must. step. away. from. keyboard.

Resist. resist typing inflammatory remarks about people writing unfounded, unresearch nonsense that contradicts guidelines from health organisations everyfuckingwhere.

ahem.

no I really should actually.
