Oooooooh, what to do? Do i post this on Breast and bottle feeding or on Weaning? because Annabel Karmel's been telling The Standard that after 4 months breastmilk is not enough to keep babies healthy...

I've submitted the following:

"Yes, of course, it's far more healthy to puree and mash veg and ram it in a baby's mouth with a spoon than it is for them to drink the milk that nature always intended..... I really am agog at how these so called "experts" can get away unchecked with making such dangerous, ridiculous, and untrue statements."

Will wait and see if it gets posted.

theyoungvisiter · 24/01/2008 22:32

actually I've just googled omega 3 and breast milk and all the online articles are unanimous that breast milk is an excellent source of fatty acids providing the mother herself gets enough in her diet. So perhaps Annabel should be feeding her purees to us? Blurgh.

hunkermunker · 24/01/2008 22:32

I have just sent a comment into the site - it's here in case it doesn't make it onto the page:

It is unfortunate that Ms Karmel puts the health of babies a distant second to her overwhelming need to sell endless books and pureeing gadgets.

It is also very clear from her words that she is no expert when it comes to breastfeeding. Breastmilk contains essential fatty acids and nutrients that are vital to the optimum development of babies - it is unfortunate that Ms Karmel doesn't seem to be aware of this fact. She would do well to do a lot more study into breastfeeding and a lot less mucking about with making smiley faces out of various vegetables.

at ab

I wonder how she thinks babies survived before the blender came along.

aitch - can you nip over to my (as yet unanswered) thread about weaning please?

welliemum · 24/01/2008 22:36

Actually, it's a serious suggestion about getting her here to talk.

There are lots of unanswered questions regarding weaning, but what she's saying runs counter to some very solid research. For example, research that shows that anything other than exclusive breastfedding increases a child's risk of being hospitalised with infection.

Not to mince words, her advice is harmful to children's health and she either doesn't know it - in which case she cannot be an expert by any definition, since the information is there on the internet for anyone to read - or she does know it, and doesn't care, in which case I don't have words enough to express how much I dispise her.

Heathcliffscathy · 24/01/2008 22:36

f*ck smiley faces last i looked (a LOOONG time ago when i was ignorant...PMN, pre-mn i call it) it was fucking (notice i've given up on the asterisks) seascapes with star fish and fucking boats. because nice food isn't nice enough to just eat. you have to fucking make it look like their favourite picture book otherwise they won't touch it.

she is mad.

Aitch · 24/01/2008 22:37

actually am awe-struck at the picture of a female child in bunches and ribbons made out of, what, cheese and mash on the cover of that book. it's a masterpiece, you've got to admit.

OP posts:
hunkermunker · 24/01/2008 22:37

She had at last count written 14 books.

I'm sure it's more now - this was last year.

Seriously, 14.

On "ways to make vegetables pretty".

And what about her kids' meals?! They're over £2 each, I noticed in Sainsbos the other day.

I get her e-newsletter thingummy to irritate myself with. She's always banging on about how she's got her innovative recipes (for, you know, fish pie) onto kid menus at some restaurant chain or other - thereby perpetuating the myth that children's food is in some way something different from that of adults.

Weird, this country, where food and children are concerned.

theyoungvisiter · 24/01/2008 22:38

no no Aitch, you deserve applause too, for services to publicising BBFA (bad baby-feeding advice)

And HM and VVQV for services to contradicting BBFA.

In fact here, standing ovation for you all

Aitch · 24/01/2008 22:38

will do, thomas.

theyoungvisiter · 24/01/2008 22:40

sorry but that child is disgusting (the mash one I mean). What's that about - encouraging cannabalism?

Go on darling, eat the lickle girl. Oh, well at least try one of her pigtails, come on now...

hunkermunker · 24/01/2008 22:40

Welliemum, you're right - that sums up how I feel about her.

Sophable, seascapes - ffs!

fletchaaarr · 24/01/2008 22:40

SHe has forums on her site

www.annabelkarmel.com/community/

I have deliberately not posted that as a link as webmaster types can see where you came from if you click on a link - if you copy and paste that into the address bar they have no idea you came from here [wicked grin]

VVVQV · 24/01/2008 22:43

why thank you!!!!

With nuts like her around, it's not surprising that children dont know where vegetables come from, and what they look like in their natural form.

3 cheers for Jamie Oliver I say.

S1ur · 24/01/2008 22:44

Damn. couldn't resist. have commented too

fletchaaarr · 24/01/2008 22:44

Oh - she has minature pasta shapes on there

welliemum · 24/01/2008 22:46

Bother, have to go out, but will have a look later at that link that Fletch didn't post
