Common racist comments you hear in 2023?

Compared to 30 years ago, how is racism different today?

For me, racism terms such as the n word p word are less used than they were 30 years ago. However, people have looked at other avenues. See comments below.

  1. "You have a chip over your shoulder" every time someone mentions racism or their lived experience it goes straight to denial mode. You are blamed for your lived experiences and told to get over it and how UK is not racist.

  2. "The UK abolished slavery. slavery was a long time ago." Every time someone tries to put forward a view of reparations of people who are still suffering from the effects of slavery they are shut down. "that was a long time ago we have changed and evolved."

  3. "I feel like a foreigner in my own country." Which is probably one of the most stupid statements considering that over 80 percent of the population is white. I always answer if you feel like a foreigner how do minorities feel?

  4. "name the racists" commonly said for Megan Markle that she should name the racists she claimed in the Royal family. But lets be honest if you did that the other person in whatever circumstance would just deny it and ultimately you will not be believed and be called someone who plays the race card and tarnishing other people's careers.

  5. "Why do black people have their own spaces if white people had it we would be accused of racism" This is commonly said by the same people who are not as vocal when other groups have their own space e.g. women, LGBT groups etc.. It just seems like whenever black people have their own space people have to put them down. Take Ngozi Fulani the media made it seem she was the bad person people argued why her charity helps black people suffering from domestic abuse. Sad how she was forced out Sistah Space due to the abuse she faced but the media never mention that and the racism she had to face.

  6. "Racism exists in all communities" this is another common one used and is a whataboutery technique. We have seen this with people like Kanye, KSI recently but what people forget there was a lot of criticism from the black community with their actions. So to suggest the black community or any other community does not do anything about racism is for the birds.

  7. "My best friend is black" This is something you would hear from the EDL or Britain First. But you would be surprised how often you hear this by a lot of people. Just because your friend or relative is black, Muslim, Asian etc does not mean you cannot be racist. Even if you are a white mother and your child is mixed race does not mean you cannot be racist. It is baffling how a lot of people seem to forget this and think that my saying I cannot be racist because of this automatically means they cannot.

I'm white but the thread title attracted me! I think the rise of racist statements that sound reasonable it the most dangerous thing. "All lives matter" is a particularly awful example.

Reugny · 01/09/2023 12:15

For those interested the hour can be heard on James O'Brien show on LBC starting at 11am until noon (so second hour) on 1 September through Global player.

@LadyKenya I'll be vague but I've just seen a thread where yours and another poster's experiences of racism were totally denigrated while a white woman's experience of anti-semitism was met with shock and support. Hope you are ok, certain boards are just cesspits and it appears unlikely that MNHQ will ever do anything about it.

To clarify, I am not attempting to denigrate the experience of anti-semitism as it sounded horrific, but the difference in the level of support from other posters was shocking.

LadyKenya · 09/09/2023 20:48

Thanks@PinotGroggio that is kind of you. It really was something on there today. The total fobbing of/ gaslighting of black posters was absolutely disgusting. I am just wondering where to go in terms of being online. I like coming on this part of MN, but it does not have that amount of traffic in terms of posters. I really do believe that MN in the main is not a good place for poc. The denial of our lived lives is damaging to us in the long term. We have to protect our mental health. The support for that other poster, while in the same breath complaining, and minimising anti-blackness was astonishing. I just won't engage once I clock what is going on, which does not usually take me too long. As you could see, a couple of other posters were just dismissed as well. I am just so sick of it all. Solidarity to all my sisters on here.

Oh Pinot - that made me tear up a little. LadyKenya is doing such an excellent job. Hugs to all - it’s so hard over there sometimes.

And so the madness continues to happen, with some posters still gripeing about those pesky black posters complaining about racism. 🙄

DojaPhat · 10/09/2023 11:11

@LadyKenya I did read that and honestly it was just dire all round! The contrast in replies of differing experiences was not lost on me. When the discussion turns to comparing how racism affects racial groups differently the masks always slip and the gloves come off, both on and off online. I'm sure you already know the truth of that matter.

PinotGroggio · 10/09/2023 11:19

I suspect MNHQ is going to delete that thread soon but the racists won't be banned. Indeed they'll live to spew another day on other threads on that board about how Harry and Meghan should be held accountable for slavery or some such shite. Apparently 1/3 of royal threads descending into accusations of racism is unacceptable but the easiest way to stop that is by not being racist so 🤷🏽‍♀️

LadyKenya · 10/09/2023 11:26

Exactly@DojaPhat . I certainly do know the score. It is not lost on us the responses that we get, depressing though that is, it is not surprising. I will not be surprised if they do delete the thread@PinotGroggio , with a weak message from @MNHQ about losing track, or some other weak, pathetic response. Never dealing properly, or posting something worthwhile in support of the black posters who are having to deal with racist posters. Time, and time again this happens, and the response from them is inadequate!

ImaniMumsnet · 10/09/2023 16:22

Hi all

Just a reminder to please avoid discussing other threads elsewhere on the boards as we have a blanket ban on threads about threads and would have to remove this thread. If you have any concerns about post(s), please report them to us using the report button. We're always more than happy to take a look.

LadyKenya · 10/09/2023 16:39

Case in point🙄.

PinotGroggio · 10/09/2023 17:00

@ImaniMumsnet we do report those threads and posters but though posts are removed, the posters never are. The racism on here is getting out of hand and nothing is ever done. All we are told is to keep reporting posts, which we do, but there's never any consequences for those posters. And then you come on here and tell us to behave?? How about tackling the racists once and for all instead?

skullbabe · 10/09/2023 17:20

Absolutely maddening

LadyKenya · 10/09/2023 17:31

It is beyond frustrating that the same thing keeps on happening. It has been questioned before on here about the makeup of the mods. It feels that black women are fair game for attack on here. Just radio silence, or a general message from MNHQ. Nothing of any substance. They should be dealing with the racists posters. Or can they not see them, I am beginning to wonder.

What @PinotGroggio said. This is not a thread about a thread though is it? Why are you not deleting long running threads on the Feminism boards for example, that explicitly reference and criticise posters and threads from elsewhere on Mumsnet?

LadyKenya · 10/09/2023 17:44

It would seem that BM is subject to different rules, and observations from the look of it.

Maggiethecat · 10/09/2023 17:59

”Duppy know who fi frighten” is all I will say.

No, actually I’ll add “ donkey seh ground nuh level”

PinotGroggio · 10/09/2023 18:05

@Socrateswasrightaboutvoting half the threads on WFWR are disgustingly racist too. Look at the outrage over a certain heritage organisation acknowledging slavery at their sites.

I've received an email from HQ telling me off, with a threat to suspend my account if I don't play nicely. Apparently we have to respect racists' others' opinions because they aren't out to offend. Imani are you really so in thrall to white woman that you can't see racism for what it is? Shame on you. I'm done with this cesspit of a site.

LadyKenya · 10/09/2023 19:48

Ah so what I have just read makes sense now. Shame on you @MNHQ. Why are you not taking the concerns of black women on your site seriously? Do we not matter? How many times are you going to ignore the racism that infests your site? Stop trying to punish the victims.

LadyKenya · 10/09/2023 19:49

Take care of yourself@PinotGroggio .

To be fair if you think you are paying a subscription to Nationalistic Tossers of course you would expect a racist history to be white washed... 😂

T'was 🙄and hard swerve on that one.
