Common racist comments you hear in 2023?

SleepDreamThinkHuge · 28/04/2023 06:48

Compared to 30 years ago, how is racism different today?

For me, racism terms such as the n word p word are less used than they were 30 years ago. However, people have looked at other avenues. See comments below.

  1. "You have a chip over your shoulder" every time someone mentions racism or their lived experience it goes straight to denial mode. You are blamed for your lived experiences and told to get over it and how UK is not racist.

  2. "The UK abolished slavery. slavery was a long time ago." Every time someone tries to put forward a view of reparations of people who are still suffering from the effects of slavery they are shut down. "that was a long time ago we have changed and evolved."

  3. "I feel like a foreigner in my own country." Which is probably one of the most stupid statements considering that over 80 percent of the population is white. I always answer if you feel like a foreigner how do minorities feel?

  4. "name the racists" commonly said for Megan Markle that she should name the racists she claimed in the Royal family. But lets be honest if you did that the other person in whatever circumstance would just deny it and ultimately you will not be believed and be called someone who plays the race card and tarnishing other people's careers.

  5. "Why do black people have their own spaces if white people had it we would be accused of racism" This is commonly said by the same people who are not as vocal when other groups have their own space e.g. women, LGBT groups etc.. It just seems like whenever black people have their own space people have to put them down. Take Ngozi Fulani the media made it seem she was the bad person people argued why her charity helps black people suffering from domestic abuse. Sad how she was forced out Sistah Space due to the abuse she faced but the media never mention that and the racism she had to face.

  6. "Racism exists in all communities" this is another common one used and is a whataboutery technique. We have seen this with people like Kanye, KSI recently but what people forget there was a lot of criticism from the black community with their actions. So to suggest the black community or any other community does not do anything about racism is for the birds.

  7. "My best friend is black" This is something you would hear from the EDL or Britain First. But you would be surprised how often you hear this by a lot of people. Just because your friend or relative is black, Muslim, Asian etc does not mean you cannot be racist. Even if you are a white mother and your child is mixed race does not mean you cannot be racist. It is baffling how a lot of people seem to forget this and think that my saying I cannot be racist because of this automatically means they cannot.

Yes, and try and talk about your experiences, and you will be asked how do you know it is because you are a poc@GoogleMeNot . Somehow it will be some other misunderstanding, and nothing to do with the colour of your skin why you received poor service, or whatever else happened. I do not even bother trying to have certain conversations with white people any more. It is not worth the aggro for me.

Oh of course, racism doesn't exist in the UK to these people.

Oh of course, racism doesn't exist in the UK to these people.

It does but it has to be "real racism".

This type of racism is only conducted by white working class men and maybe a few white working class poorly educated women.

@ancientgran could you share the name of the documentary pls? Having a moment and I can't find it.

Sorry I've been busy with GC. I see you have had the link from LadyKenya. I watched the 2nd episode earlier, honestly the attitudes are really out there. I mean I grew up in the 50s so I do remember how barefaced people were about their racism but it still shocks. The second episode is 1940 to 1965 so my era for lots of it.

Some really heartbreaking bits but I won't do any more spoilers if you are going to watch it.

Hoping to watch episode 3 tomorrow, GC permitting.

MNHQ have stopped deleting the personal attack posts I report now. Including the one that claimed I was a gaslighting white man and another one that said English isn’t my strong suit. Now they’re saying we’re racist to even have a name for racist white women 🙄

Personally I think you are wasting your time on those specific threads.

There are lots of other threads on MN where racism rears it head but less overtly.

You will still see MN's interesting moderation at work though.

Reugny · 27/08/2023 20:29

Just realised I'm posting on two at the moment.

Don't give too much of your time, or energy to that thread@HadalyEve . Those posters there are just going to keep coming back with the same thing. I, and others here get what you are saying. They will not, no matter how long you attempt to get them to see.

Well thread is over now.

Eastie77Returns · 27/08/2023 22:03

The Karen thread though. Wow. Shocking, even by MN’s racist standards.

It’s eye opening when the racists show their hand so openly.

I think I sometimes forget the extent to which so many White women dislike us and it takes a thread like that one to remind me.

They may not realize it but they lived up to the Karen stereotype on that thread. Ironically proving the point.

Thank you for sharing the Mixed Britannia documentary. Truly fascinating. Wish more white people here were aware of British history- not just the history they know of Great Britain saving the savages in the colonies.

I hope @Lndnmummy is ok. She may have been policed.

And the cheek of the whole thing is that they will complain that they are under attack, while they continue to have no problem continuing with their racist attacks on poc. The irony of it all.

And that is one of the reasons that the curriculum needs an overhaul (thanks for nothing Kemi). They need to start teaching children the truth about the British Empire, and the harm, and lasting legacies that have resulted from that period in history. Such as how, and why racism came about. Black, and brown people's resistance against imperialism. People such as Steve Biko, and the fight against the awful, inhumane system of apartheid, which the British Government had no issue with supporting. The British Raj, and the negative impact that had on the Indian continent, and the resistance of the people to that. There is so much that is being swept under the carpet, the uncomfortable parts of British history, and the part that they played in causing harm, and long term disadvantage to other Countries is not what they seem to want the children to know. We have to teach our own children, because they won't.

Socrateswasrightaboutvoting · 28/08/2023 10:53

1,000,001 : White women were property too....

Nobody is saying that white women did have it bad too, but tell me when it has been worse to be a White woman than a Black or Brown woman? I'll wait...

1,000,002: White women are invisible beyond a certain again

FFS! Yes it is terrible how society treats aging women. I'll remind that pesky shop assistant, that I am invisible the next time they are following me around a store. Can you imagine that being invisible is your biggest issue?

1,000,003: White women are being silenced/policed by men.

Black and Brown women are being policed / silenced by White women.

We have some amazing allies who are White Women, but even with allies the sheer numbers against us is really quite depressing. Every discussion is drowned out with toxic tears and wails or what about the men.

We need to have words LadyK. Kemi is not the first name I want to see when I come onto this thread 😂

On a serious note, I have spent much time educating my children a more truthful history.

You deserve multiple medals. I went back later on and the thread had finished.

Eastie77Returns · 28/08/2023 12:51

As noted on the Karen thread, when you try to explain history and cite examples of atrocities committed against Black people it is viewed as an attack on white people and it some cases specifically middle aged white women.

It is mind boggling to the point of Orwellian. Historical fact = an attack.

At one point several posters said MN had to ban anyone who was derailing a thread on misogyny by mentioning racism. It was basically “yeah racism is terrible but what about white women and our suffering?”
Followed by “And why won’t these silly Black women realise they are being called Karens too so they need to join us in the fight?”

Because obviously misogyny is the only thing we have to worry about. Heaven forbid we focus on issues that impact us rather than solely concern ourselves with their battle against invisibility and other terrible treatment.

It’s almost comical how upset they get when we refuse to know our place.

HadalyEve · 28/08/2023 13:44

It boggles the mind.
We Black women create Karen as far back as 2010 to call out racist behaviour of older white women especially for the micro aggressions we have faced in work from female managers. No one bother, but those tweets still there.

Karen gets stolen from us by white women and white men and they go about misusing it because they don’t know the meaning of what they stole. Karen becomes a female version of don’t be a Dick. They not even aware of Karen until 2020 when a white feminist decides she offended by it and tweets without knowing nothing about it.

So white women get all upset and instead of righting the wrong, and returning Karen back to us, joining us fighting the appropriation and misuse, they attack us and say it is misogyny and agesim and say a white man invented it. It’s such BS that it just goes to show how little we are listened to. How basically many white women still think hell will freeze over before they believe a single word from a Black mouth.

They also have to believe a white man invent it because it doesn’t fit the white feminism narrative to be keeping something stolen from Black women and fighting against restoring it to us or at the very least acknowledging the truth.

No, feminism be the struggle against men, especially white men so it has to be an invention of a white man. Nevermind that white man isn’t going to call out racist behaviour of their white women using our ways- or that the white man they point to was complaining about his ex wife Karen keeping his kids and house in a divorce nothing to do with Karen type behaviour.

Our objections to our words and our lived history being stolen, misused and finally erased by them because they have abused until it is FUBAR are finally framed as victim blaming attacks on them. Cue Alice with her all drowning white tears.

LadyKenya · 28/08/2023 13:54

Apologies@Socrateswasrightaboutvoting for mentioning...that woman!😁It is so much easier now to impart knowledge of our history, and amazing things that poc have done, and achieved than before I think. What a difference it would have made to myself not just basically being told that people like me were once slaves who the British so benevolently freed🤔 But people like myself were inventors (respect to Mr Garrett Morgan, inventor of the traffic light system) explorers ( Mr Matthew Henson, who went on expeditions to the North Pole) scientist, educators, and so on. (Mae Jemison, the first black woman in space, I salute you).
